Summer’s Almost Here!

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!  Summer’s almost here!!

Less than 3 weeks to go, or 18 sleeps (not that I’m counting)

I believe it was that wise old sage Pink who once said; “Let’s get this party STARTED!!”

Of course she just had a baby yesterday, so no parties for Pink for a little while 🙂

Not so for us, so herewith, just a few suggestions to help get you in the mood for my very most favouritist time of year;

.

DO gather up all the summer-hued nail polishes out of your cupboards and use them to bring colour to your bathroom as well as your tootsies!

.

.

.

DO succumb to Island Fever for the season and paint one wall in your abode a hot tropical colour-  Hellooo, it’s paint, not marriage-

If you’re tired of it when Autumn rolls around, it’s so much less humiliating than an annulment.

.

.

If you ARE the marrying kind (or just frivolously rich) you could go really bold and commit to an outrageous wallpaper

.

.

On a much smaller scale;

.

Slim Paley photo

DO buy yourself some luck and purchase ladybugs for your garden.

They eat all those unmentionables and if you have young children, releasing them is always fun! (the ladybugs, not the kids)

.

..

Do NOT put a photo of Gisele on the fridge (or perhaps Daniel Craig emerging out of the water in the pale blue trunks with a dark blue waistband, rivulets of water cascading down his blah, blah, blah, if I remember the photo correctly)   Anyway… whoever thought of that as diet incentive was a masochist.

Instead, put your own bathing suit in a place of honour where you’ll see it everyday to remind you of the inevitable…

Like death, taxes and arguing with your teenager about the car, you’re gonna have to get into it at some point this summer, so just deal.

..

.

PS. I actually picked the fattest photo I could find of her. You’re welcome.

Doesn’t it make you feel better to know that her husband probably talks about nothing except football?

Hey, wait a minute…

Well, that’s not all my husband talks about…

.

.

Seriously though,

DO join me in trying to be a little more mindful of our diets and exercise

.

But Dudes, DON’T get carried away…

.

.

.

.

DO have some fun with costume jewelry (more on that in another post!)

.

.

DO “Summerize” your gift wrapping- I just picked up these fun, brightly hued bunches of raffia to add a punch of fiesta colour to gifts this summer.

.

.

.

DO, If you’re terribly glamourous, work a turban like Marisa Berenson (in one of my all time favourite summer photos).

.

Slim Paley photo

DO add colour to summer meals in simple, healthy ways.

This was lunch at a friend’s home today- how beautiful is that, with fresh rose petals strewn on a plum linen tablecloth?!

.

.

Rose petals, ladybugs, turbans & tangerine toes, Oh my… so many fun things to look forward to!

And best of all, kids home for the summer holidays!!

Stay tuned for lots more warm weather fun &

  1. What a fun seasonal post. I love the change of every season. It will be especially nice here in Vancouver when winter is over. OK, I must say that today was very promising.

Just set the ladybug photo as my new desktop background. 🙂

  2. I just finished your last post and voila…….a new one pops up! I was so wanting the Hermes bag, slides and watch strap and now I just want fresh salmon and raspberries! You’re making me dizzzzy!!

  3. I love your point about painting a wall..just one wall a color you love..why not?? I have a friend who paints her own interiors and just does one wall at a time. She’s pretty careful about her color selections, so she always finishes the room…but you could do one wall and see if you’d want to have more that color…
I love the turban look…wish I could pull it off. Your roses are gorgeous!

  4. Love the sherbet colors but pray tell what is the white thing (line) on the model or was I the only one

    who noticed?

  5. Your summer images are fun. The colors are amazing. Your roses are gorgeous. I love the fuschia wall covered with interesting framed images- like an English print room on steroids. Young Marissa in a tuban is lovely. I wish I could pull off a turban, but fear I would look like I was about to say, ” All right, Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close up”. Dear Slim, you always raise my spirits. Thanks.

  6. happy almost summer to you!!
your flower photographs are always breathtaking. I secretly “borrow” some and use them as my screen saver for a few days! I’m a big raffia fan (sound so strange to say that out loud;) and have never seen the colored versions- must look for that. what a lovely lunch your friend prepared for you!
    happy weekend!!

  7. This is your funniest post ever, Slim. I was so inspired last month by tangerine that I got my toes painted that color for Mother’s Day. The pedicure is chipping a little. The lady painted hibiscus on my big toes so I can’t have it redone just yet. It matches my sunburn so well. 🙂 BTW, the best way to soothe a sunburn is an astringent made of lavender and witchhazel from none other than Temecula Lavender Company! 🙂

  8. Your blog with all the beautiful photographs and colors makes my heart sing! At this time in my life I have really begun to appreciate the small pleasures that come on a daily basis. I think that they were always available to me but not utilized…maybe one of the upsides of aging. Thank you for your lovely blog.

  9. Love this post soooo much. I love Summer. Keep fingers crossed that June gloom stays far away this year!!(ouch bite my tongue) Every pic amazing as usual, especially Marisa Berenson and last shot
of your roses just breathtaking! Have a wonderful weekend.
    Oh yes GO CANUCKS.

  10. Considering the cold weather and rain we have been having in Northern California Summer seems far, far away. Thanks for cheering us up with all that wonderful Summer color!

    Cheers,

    Claudia

  11. you’re funny:)

Beautiful sunny day here in Vancouver (finally), off to the beach with my mutt!

    Go Canucks go!!

  12. You are so much fun! And I don’t even like summer! Please don’t hate me but it must have something to do with being a red head that can’t be sunbathing…not to mention the fact that my days of looking good in a bathing suit are so far gone…I will however buy some lady bugs for my garden and wear some brightly colored polish this time of year. 🙂

  13. Summer is my favoritist season, too. marisa berenson so pretty in that pic. I wish I knew when I was that age how hot I was. lol. Why do we always think we have something to improve? Youth is enough! I am wearing a flourescent pink J crew T shirt as I write, which is the exact same color as my favorite bikini in 1975. Hot Pink. Hot.

  14. OK, so I tried the LadyBug thing long ago when the kids were young…and well they like flew away in 5 mins—but it was alot of fun!

Always love love any of your pics of your home and garden.

I have a step counter and now also love your good food inspiration! My new food is Quinoa!

Hope you will be going to Sun Valley for the 4th since I am dying for some S.V. pics!

  15. Dear S.P. and readers,

Thought I should share this memory. It was inspiring to me, in my bikini-phobic state, which I can truly say that since then, has significantly subsided. I was in Crete for vacay with my hubby, and relaxing on the beach (reclined with my tummy sucked in :-).

An older woman, 65-70 years of age I would guess, was playing on the sand with her grandchildren. She had on a brightly coloured, floral bikini and a pearl necklace of at least three strands, along with gold bracelets and all of her rings, sporting a wide brimmed hat wrapped in a Hermes scarf. She was magnificent and totally uninhibited. I will never forget that woman. Such joy and living in the moment. Maybe it comes with age, but I doubt it. My husband, who is a man of little words (believe me!), said “now that’s a broad.” God bless her! I’m bikini shopping!

      • I AM 65 now but have not been able to wear a bikini since the first son was born. (Vertical C-section scar). BUT, I do wear a bathing suit, don’t look good but at this point just want to have fun and enjoy the sun and sand. I wear my earrings and rings too:):)

  16. Love, Love, Love it all!
I especially love the hot pink bedroom… I would love to find the coverlet (anywhere I can find one? even a reasonable facsimile?)… the whole thing has inspired me to redo my sanctuary…
An explosion of vivid florals and hot colors for summer. Love the photo wall too!
Thanks for the inspiration to play outside the lines!

  17. LOVE the suggestion about displaying all my color-for-summer nail polishes…the only thing stopping me from following through is a certain wee 5-year-old boy who may–when he spots them–fancy his chances as a muralist and attempt your idea of a ‘wall of color’ in the bedroom…and I’m still laughing at your post. Keep’em coming!

    • I will never forget the time my parents were napping and I decided to paint my doll house furniture with my mom’s nail polishes…on their teak coffee table…and then tried to use nail polish remover to clean up the mess 🙁
The Horror! I’m surprised it didn’t put me off interior design for life!

  18. Hot pink is my fave color and I’ve been searching for a wild wallpaper. Please do tell the source! I love your blog. It’s by far the best one out there. Thank you for providing good information along with gorgeous images and a touch of humor.

    • Yikes! I feel really badly, but I cannot find my source for that particular wallpaper 🙁
I was sure it was from “Timorous Beasties” (one of my favourites) but no can find.
If you go to this link though; http://www.wallpaperdirect.co.uk/ and type in PINK it will literally give you 100’s of papers to choose from in a very wide price range. They have a ginormous selection.

  19. Slim fabulous images of bright fun summer color!!

  20. Slim – you never disappoint…lovely picture of Marisa Berenson. The image of her
in the bath in “Barry Lyndon” is etched upon my wee brain. Lovely. Thank you!

  21. Hi Slim: I adore the pictures of your roses!! I had a rose garden when we lived in Toronto, but now in Orlando, haven’t had the same luck. Oh well, I shall enjoy all the pictures you take, and that shall be enough. I’m so glad to have found your blog, and look forward to following you from now on.

    Walk good. Betty
