Friday Favourites (#22)

Happy Friday Everyone!

I hope you passed a pleasant week; picked a few pumpkins, enjoyed a walk beneath burnished leaves, perhaps sipped a steaming, cinnamon laced beverage in front of a crackling fire while your homemade squash soup simmered?

All is well here,  but I did learn a valuable lesson the hard way.  You know how “they” say you should always back up your computer on a regular basis? “They” are right! I was of the obviously deluded mindset that if you owned a Mac it was impossible to catch a virus and therefore I could be somewhat cavalier about backing up my ‘stuff” (and by ‘cavalier’ I mean not since 2009 )   I was happily working away on my kitchen computer, walked away for a few hours and came back to a black screen with the words “YOU MUST RESTART YOUR COMPUTER” written in every language you could think of.  Hmmm…I thought to myself in English, French, German and a smattering of Japanese. I guess I should restart my computer.

No such luck.  A trip to the Mac store resulted in a diagnosis of hard drive fatality.

So there you go. Learn from me People; back up your stuff!  I thought I would soothe my sorrows by treating myself to the new iphone. Wrong again. All sold out, unless of course I wanted black.  Like I need yet another thing to lose in the black hole that is pretty much every bag I own.

So I did what any other self respecting person would do in that situation.

I bought new shoes 🙂

Oh-like you wouldn’t have done the same thing.

Don’t you just love a good pile of firewood? It’s one of my favourite Fall/Winter things

I also went grocery shopping and discovered these delicious ‘New to Me’ grapes called Thomcords.  While they’re not quite as scrumptious and tart as Concord grapes, they’re pretty darn close and without all those pesky seeds. Try them. (Did I ever tell you that I once made a Concord grape pie from a Martha Stewart cookbook and de-seeded every single grape??  Is it ‘seeded’ or ‘de-seeded’? Anyway, it was fantastic even if I do say so myself, and I don’t even bake.)

.

Speaking of baking, check out these ADORABLE pumpkin macaroons over on Yummy Mummy’s blog.

.

.

Aren’t they the cutest?

Find the recipe here; YummyMummy.

Another new favourite sweet;

Have you tried these? They’re strangely good.  They also come in Green Tea flavour, which I haven’t tried yet.

Nice to keep a bag in the car, by your bed, in your purse…

Usually I’m of the “All White All the Time Towels” faith,

but lately I’m seriously coveting these beautifully patterned, luxuriously decadent towels from Fresco

And Lastly,

People often ask me “Slim, if you could choose any photographer to photograph your home, who would it be?”

.

Well, actually no one’s really ever asked me that,

I was just practicing…

But if they did, I would surely answer  “Oberto Gili”

.

Oberto Gili

.

You might recall seeing some of his images on my posts before.

His previous book is a classic must have.

  1. SP
Fresco towels…the best and they have a small store in BH.
And a little Marni always soothes the sole ( get it! )

Off to the Getty to see the PST exhibit and walk the gardens.

  2. So sorry about your Mac.. I was sitting in front of my laptop Tuesday evening, praying that the restore disk process would actually work after having the lovely “Your harddrive is crashing” message.. I’m happy I had a warning.. Now I’m praying everything actually backed up, too. Smile.

  3. Omgosh, this happened to me a couple of months ago and in the shop it went and Hubby bought a new lap top for himself, which I had to use until the big daddy came home. Well, the big daddy came home all fixed up,backed-up and ready to go and yet here I sit using the new well worn in laptop, go figure. Loved all of your images especially the last of the floral arrangement, so gorgeous. Happy weekend to YOU!! Kathysue

  4. Thanks for featuring my Macarons, Slim! So sorry about your computer 🙁 Mine was thrown off the coffee table by a toddler this week. Thankfully hubby was able to save it after hours of computer surgery. Next time I’ll just buy shoes.

  5. Please forgive change of subject, but I forgot to write down the name of that wine from TJ that you recommended few weeks ago, Slim. Could you recall the name? Thanks. Carol

  6. Wise words, I’m sure….my husband is always saying that too…hate it when he is right!!

    I too am a white towel person, but those are quite tempting! I have republished my chocolate covered tarantula recipe this year, I hope you have a chance to try it, these please every age group {and 1/2 the ingredients come from Trader Joe’s!}

I am happy you are back in business.

  7. Your photos are beautiful as usual. I love the tray of fruits and veggies. I am really frightened now that you told your Mac story. I have a Mac and have NEVER backed it up. I have no idea how and was obviously a cavalier Mac owner myself. No more. I’ll have to ask my son pronto.
As soon as I sign off, I plan on ordering the Oberto Gili book. His photos are stunning, but, then again, so are yours.
Have a great weekend, and I definitely would have bought the shoes.
    Best…Victoria

  8. The “Fresco” towels are fabulous! I just got the “Tropical Peacock” and it looks like a tapestry hanging over my shower curtain. Your colour photos just give me goosebumps..absolutely gorgeous! franki

  9. Love those towels.

That book looks like a wonderful gift idea.
The photo of the squirrel on your ipad is hilar!
    Have a great weekend!

  10. Cute, cute post. That arrangement of Japanese Anemones…beyond stunning.
Then your little swinging guy made my day.
    Happy weekend xo

  11. You must try carbonite. It runs in the background of your computer, and backs up every file you have, without limit, for less than $60 a year. I crashed 2 weeks after I got it, and lost nothing. I swear by it. And you can pull up a file you’ve backed up from any computer or even your iPad with the free app. Try it! Promise you’ll love it, even if the initial backup takes a while.

  12. It’s appropriate that you mention losing your hard drive and loving Oberto Gili in the same post…he is a teacher of organic processes and of living a fluid life. Just for fun, let’s suppose he said to you, “One thing naturally leads to another–that’s just the way it is.” Because the hard drive was lost, you can now turn the page to a new more technically organized you. (I know you’re excited–how fun does that sound??)

I lost hundreds of photos on my computer the year my daughter was born (true heartache) and now always back up in multiples with the oversight of every good Mac person I can get my hands on. I back up on a network, on a disc, in a cloud…Be easy on yourself and I hope you are well after such a trauma. Thank goodness it’s only technical and it didn’t get the best of you. You still have that special touch for making others smile.

    • Thank you Kathryn- that is true heartache to lose such precious photos. Lucky for me, nothing too precious downloaded on that computer since 2009. Also, at around that time I put many of our travel photos onto discs and put in the safe. Older photos-well, I still have those on, imagine this, paper! Bless their little 4 X 6″ hearts!

      • The same thing happened to me 🙁 I lost the first year of pics of my sons first year. Thank god for Facebook. My husband worked for Apple and he tried everything. We sent it to the big time professionals willing to spend whatever it took. He is usually a bit obsessive on backing up but in the exhaustion of the new days of parenthood “backing up” was the last thing on our minds. Truly heartbreaking.

  13. Dear Slim, I’m so sorry to hear about your computer problem. I do so hope that you didn’t lose your amazing stash of other’s images or your own precious photographs. My husband regularly backs up our computers onto an external hard drive which he puts in a bank safe deposit box. If you are writing or creating original or irreplaceable things, it’s worth the time and effort. Having said that, I’m grateful that my husband does it, because I’d have to learn how to do it if it were up to me. I love seeing your beautiful images of your home and flowers. I’d hate for you to lose any of them. And thanks for the tip on Oberto Gili. Is the bookcase Mary Randoph Carter’s?

    • The bookcase is an antique I bought many years ago in London Ruth.
That’s quite a smart husband you have there!

      • The bookcase holding “Luxury of Space”, “At Home with Town & Country” & “Beaton” is beautiful. But I meant the shelving in the photo you attribute to Oberto Gili. It looks like one of Mary Randolph Carter’s. I feel like I recognize the photos in the photograph.

  14. Your photos are every bit as good as any by a “professional”. I always enjoy stopping by to see what’s new. And “backing up”…….heck yes!! I learned the hard way too!
    Kathi

  15. Where in the world did that squirrel come from? Too funny. I should Google myself!

Anyway I should be focusing on all of the beauty in your post! Those towels, the Anemones! The Autumn array of fruits!! Lovely, Slim.

  16. As always your post make me smile! Thank you. I love my Quiet Saturday mornings over coffee and a few/several of my favorite blogs and I must say yours is at the top! The photos are wonderful today and I am heading straight to Amazon for my new book purchase.
    Have a wonderful weekend.
    All the best,
    Pam

  17. PICKED the pumpkins. Don’t tell me you grow those, too. I can’t take it.
    However… Do know:
book ordered (3 as always bulk buy)
    mac man coming Monday
know the towels!! Actually know of an addition to
the line. Look for Monday delivery. 🙂 xo

  18. Jeepers you and I must be connected in computer Hell…is your computer Sagittarian? Lindaraxa’s computer went through the same ordeal last week and I, like you, am very cavalier about backing up. My message, if it’s any consolation, was even more ominous than yours, Catastrophic Failure! I must say that whoever writes these warnings minces no words, I won’t go through the ordeal, needless to say said pc is now in intensive care at Geek Squad. I have been “allowed” to use daughter’s if I promise on all my grandchildren to avoid downloading or touching anything I dont understand. I have learned one thing though and that is that for the relatively small fee of $40 a yr you can now store your stuff in the Cloud (whatever) through services provided by Best Buy (Geek Squad) and the like. AND if you do that, and here comes the best part….they will be able to work directly on whatever you have f..ed up. Doesn’t that sound grand??? Unfortunately, unlike you, I was too broke after the bill to even think of buying shoes…though the thought did enter my mind…for an hour or two. Instead I made cinnamon rolls for breakfast today, not as chic but comforting and cheaper. Hey, you do what you have to do…

  19. Oberto Gili has always been a favorite of mine…even before his days of working with Wendy Goodman at House & Garden…Cheers to you and his beautiful eye. xo

Would love to hear from you!
