Tartan Around With Plaid

Louis Vuitton Winter

Happy New Year Everyone!  I’m back from Cold Mountain.  Expecting my frozen feet to warm up again any day now.  I actually invested in an electric foot warmer, which just arrived today,  but I’ll save that for Friday Favourites if it works well.  For some reason (possibly that I haven’t made any yet) I’m not ready to talk about New Year’s Resolutions, new starts or becoming a better human in 2011 yet.  I don’t want to suggest that my New Year began inauspiciously but when I removed the fur slippers I’d been wearing in Sun Valley all day, there was a mouse turd stuck to my foot.

I think I read somewhere that’s a Scottish sign for Good Luck.

How’s that for a smooth segue into a post about Tartan?!

I‘m in a red and black frame of mind  as we’re with friends and family in  Las Vegas this weekend.  Although, so far, things aren’t looking too rosy- despite seeing Cirque du Soleil’s LOVE again last night which is always a sensory treat.  As our seats afforded us stellar views of the ridiculously sinuous dancers I vowed to myself (as I always do) that I would stop eating naughty food for awhile.  That lasted until 11:45 this morning when we had PINK’s Hot Dogs delivered to our room.  I daren’t sully this post by adding the photo- although be assured, I did take one!  Oh…the flesh is weak…no where on the planet is this more apparent than in Vegas, I think we’d all agree.  As for my luck,  the night is still young, and the fact that we’re on the 21st floor… well, surely that means something!

However I’ll leave you with much prettier images than me debasing myself in Sin City, although I can’t promise I won’t post again in the wee hours if Lady Luck befriends me.

Julie Hagerty and Albert Brooks in “Lost in America”, possibly the funniest scene ever of someone losing control gambling. (I’m one roll away from her character  BTW :) )

.Perchance I miss posting ‘Favourites’ this week, as I will be traveling on Friday, I wanted to share this little gem with you.  British designer Jasper Conran’s first book  ‘Country‘ has recently been published and it’s a gorgeous tome!  Jasper was a young ‘Enfant Terrible’ ‘ just making his debut in the fashion world when I lived in London.  Despite the formidable shadow cast by his famous father Sir Terence Conran, Jasper has managed to stand the test of time and then some, to become a well respected and talented designer in his own right. Making his mark not only in fashion but interior design, fragrance and tableware (Conran designs for Wedgewood and Designer’s Guild, amongst others) he has a beautiful new feather to put in his cap. ‘Country‘ is a rich and quirky feast of mucky wellies, village fetes, roaring pub fires and heart-stopping vistas.  This is not an interior design book by any means, but rather a loving and personal tribute to everything that makes English Country Life so unique and appealing to the rest of the world.

Please Watch this Video for more lovely images from ‘Country’.

Walt Whitman’s First Edition “Leaves of Grass”

My Lover Gave Me Green Leaves

BY JOSEPHINE DICKINSON

My lover gave me green leaves
with the mud of the garden on them,
radishes sharp and red,
nasturtium flames.

He gave me the tender heart
of a cabbage, its glossy coat,
a loaf of bread studded deep
with seeds.

He gave me the note
the blackbird
I’d cried at the blackness of
by the river sang.

He gave me the struck fire
of the thoughts
in his mind—
flint on flint.

He gave me the taste,
direct on his tongue,
of the syllables their embers
did not destroy.

He gave me his word,
the word of an Adam—
a promise,
should he set eyes on the sun.

He gave me a drop of the dew
to hold.
To see my face in it.
To look through.

He gave me,
in the chrisomed palm
of his empty hand—
a gasp of joy.

Born in London in 1957, poet Josephine Dickinson has been deaf since the age of six as a result of a childhood illness. She studied classics at Oxford University and went on to establish a career as a musician, composer, and poet. In her late 30s she relocated to Alston, a remote English Cumbrian town, where she met and married an elderly sheep farmer, Douglas Dickinson, who died in 2004.

Her poems, rich in natural imagery, are sometimes metered or rhymed, but always attentive to sound in their tender evocations of rural life. In a 2007 interview with the Times (London), Dickinson stated, “I do know that I found speech more difficult than music to cope with after the deafness. I came to see the written word as a liberation, which was wonderful. Very exotic and exciting.”

Dickinson continues to tend her late husband’s sheep farm.

What, pray tell, would we ever have done without our jeans??  Ever since that first pair of “Little Boy” Lees with the mortifying vinyl instead of leather patch (Leather patches started at 27″ waist and had only a single instead of double  orange thread inseam. Forever burned on my psyche; the important stuff  the “Mean Girls” took note of in high school), never has one single item of clothing in my closet been reached for so often.  From the days of sneaking jeans to school in a brown paper bag, to wearing them with sky high heels in nightclubs (finally a leather patch- take that Mean Girls ) to my more demure phase of slitting seams and adding antique lace panels- I’ve always loved my jeans!

I’ve cut them, rolled them, painted them, patched them…made so many slashes in one pair it was like trying to get my legs through a slinky… Oh those were the days!  From Lees to Levis, Calvins to Gucci (but never, God forbid Jordache), Seven for Mankind, Earnest Sewn, Citizens For Humanity, True Religion, A.P.S., Paper, Denim & Cloth, Bishop…how many pairs of jeans have we bought over the years?!

Don’t we all have our “Fat” jeans and “Skinny” jeans, “Weekend” jeans and “Look Good But Can Only Hold my Stomach Like This For a Few Hours” jeans? Let’s get real-who needs a scale if you have just the right pair of jeans to keep you honest?!

And how many times have we answered the eternal question “What are you wearing?” with “Just jeans“??

I rest my case!

Herewith, some cool dungarees;

Didn’t  we all do this, much to our parent’s horror? (and of course, much shorter in the back :)

Our tanning regimen was pure baby oil, iodine and album covers wrapped in foil, held up to our faces to bake like so many frozen french fries propped against the hot brick of the school wall (No, it was lunch time…really!)

The intense scent memory of melting Yardley lip gloss, clove and violet gum, and broken Pixi sticks leaking sticky powder into the minute rolled up “pockets” of cut-offs floats back to me like the notes of a song (“Brandy” perhaps?!)
