Postcard From NYC

“A Tree Grows in The Upper East Side”

.

I’m checking in from NYC where we’re attending our older son’s graduation from college. (Tear pops out of eye) I’ve got the extra strength tissues at the ready.

I know many of you have been through this emotional experience before, while others are casting loving glances at your little ones and thinking you can’t even imagine the day potty training will be finished, much less discussing cap & gown pick up.

I hope I don’t embarrass myself.

I really hate crying in public. Seriously. I have tricks I’ve almost perfected at sad movies and plays and can no longer watch anything to do with animals.

.

Slim Paley photo

It’s a beautiful time to be here. Springtime in NY…

It gives Springtime in Paris a run for it’s Euros.

The weekend weather was perfection. We walked and walked – one of the things about living in NY that I miss the most.

.

.

Slim Paley photo of Prada’s windows

Although today it clouded over and rained, just as predicted, I still walked over 6 miles (of course I have my trusty pedometer with me)

As my shoes were totally flat with leather soles, my feet are burning with the heat of a thousand suns and my toes are cramping up like little crippled Cheetos.

Drinking $8 bottles of water doesn’t seem to be helping.

How so many woman in Manhattan walk all these city blocks in teetering heels never ceases to amaze (and slightly irritate) me.

.

.

Slim Paley photo

The ‘heel-less’ sky high platform, first seen at Alexander McQueen, is still around.

Not surprising given the obvious  practicality, not to mention never having to worry about getting your heel stuck in the hem of your pants or a side-walk grate.

Genius, really.

.

.

Slim Paley photo

Loved this display in Prada of the  paparazzi, I assume perhaps a nod to  the Met Ball last week?

.

and the Barney’s windows- a tribute to 10 years of Alber Elbaz at Lanvin

.

.

The Ralph Lauren windows, while at the other end of the spectrum, are always delicious.

Can I be Ricky Lauren when I grow up? (but  still be married to my husband, though I don’t know quite how that would work)

.

.

Slim Paley photo

#1 Son and I walked for hours downtown too.

.

.

Slim Paley photo

I snapped this photo only because I felt it incapsulated a little bit of everything downtown- a lot of beauty, a little garbage, promotion of the Arts and graffiti.

.

.

Such GREAT people watching too. Probably the best in the country in NY, don’t you think?

Bloody hell, there are a lot of gorgeous woman downtown.

As my mom would say, “Every Dog has it’s Day”

.

And speaking of’; my moonlighting job as “The Barktorialist” also kept me busy.

Slim Paley photo

Meet “Martin”. She likes to sing when having her photo taken. (and yes, “Martin” is a girl. It’s NY, after all…)

.

.Slim Paley photo

.

Unfortunately, because I have a mild aversion to getting arrested, one of  my  favorite NY moments had to go without photo documentation today.

3 New York City policemen locked out of their squad car on 5th Ave. and trying to jimmy the window open with one of those coat hanger/window shimmier thingies.

Hilarious.

You can’t imagine how hard it was not to grab my camera (or ask if they needed me to call the police :) )

More than a couple of 5th Avenue doormen were having quite a chuckle at the NYPD’s expense.

And what’s with President Obama coming to NY every time I’m here?!

Coincidence???

.

Finally, I treated myself to updating my make-up collection with a late afternoon visit to Barney’s. God I love the guys that work in cosmetics down there- they’re the best!

Im such  a sucker for getting caught up in the moment when I finally  succumb to the cosmetics department- are you?

I usually sprint through, just to save my credit cards the burn, but once I sit down for an application …it’s all over.

.

Naturally, I’m firmly convinced I’m going to look like this tomorrow morning

.

After all, a girl can dream.

Especially in New York.

A Page From My New York Diary

A beautiful botanical extravaganza in a Bergdorf’s window  (Carolina Herrera)

.

Don’t you just LOVE New York?!  There is just so much to do and see in this city it’s crazeee.  One week is really not enough! wa wa…  I hope I can come back soon.  We’ve  had such a great time and I will always remember getting up early and watching the Royal wedding from my hotel here.

As always, the shop windows were fabulous…

Such pretty detail- love the contrast of the sequins and floral against the circus straw.

As I mentioned in my last post

President Obama decided to be in the same area of town as me. Coincidence??

.

We even managed to get out of the city one night and enjoyed

 an AMAZING dining experience at

Blue Hill at Stone Barns  in Pocantico Hills (Westchester,NY)

.

Slim Paley iphoto

Straight from the farm to the table, everything served at Blue Hill is either grown or raised or produced there.  The photo above is of fresh baby vegetables presented in such a charming way. Who knew a simple leaf could taste that delicious?!

.

Slim Paley iPhoto

Crazy fresh salad is presented on individual triangular slabs of granite.

My favourite thing, besides the insanely delicious seafood soup?

A smoked Kale cocktail.  You heard me.

I’m sorry I couldn’t take more photos, but a girl’s gotta be discreet (sometimes :) )

Blue Hill at Stone Farms is about a 50-60 minute drive from Manhattan. Jackets required.

.

And speaking of cocktails…

Slim Paley Photo

I finally went to the Pegu Club

Delicious cocktails there too!

.

BTW,

If your plans are taking you to NYC in the near future, I strongly recommend this little book;

It’s hip, fun to read & accurate

I was struck by the dark, shrouded silhouette of this building against the night skies of the Village.

.

And lastly,

Talk about being in a place that you’ll never forget when something momentous happens-

I’m now in Washington, DC and the streets are filled with people yelling and running towards the White House with the news of Osama Bin Laden!

This certainly will be a trip I’ll never forget.

Well done America

What a week!!

Live From New York…

.

Slim Paley Photo

The weather has been  absolutely GLORIOUS in NY so far!

Gosh, I hate to jinx myself (and the rest of the city while I’m at it) but I simply cannot post without acknowledging it’s ‘Hot Time, Summer in the City ‘  So Thank you, Powers That Be!

Did I overpack?? uh…Is there a Royal Wedding this week??

Oh well…better to be safe than sorry, and if that lost wedding invitation just happens to arrive right at the last moment, I have more than enough clothes to see me through to London  :)

.

.

Slim Paley Photo

The juxtaposition of the pink blossoms against the black brick was so striking on the streets of Soho today.

.

In fact, come to think of it, pink puffs of pleasure were to be found all over the NY…

Slim Paley photo

Ricotta cheesecake with rhubarb compote and sorbet at Locanda Verde , Greenwich Hotel, Tribeca.

Great restaurant, fun atmosphere, good service and nice selection of wines at reasonable prices.

We ‘d definitely go back.

As always, I’m enchanted by The Dogs of New York…could they be any cuter?!

I ‘heart’ you too :)

.

.

And a fun ending to a beautiful day in the city…

Slim Paley photo

I went to Yankee Stadium!

.

Slim Paley photo

.

It was fun! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect…I’ve never been to the Bronx before, so I thought I better bring some provisions …You heard me…

Slim Paley Photo

And of course a good book, just incase things got boring.

.

Slim Paley Photo

Silly moi- my snacks weren’t necessary. There was plenty of hearty fare at the ball game.

Oh, and that reminds me;  NO iPads, laptops or Kindles allowed at the New Yankee Stadium!

(Thankfully my husband had already gone in ahead and therefore wasn’t privy to my cloak & dagger smuggling of said ipad slid down the back waistband of my jeans  (mercifully, I brought a coat and I know you won’t tell anyone :) )  It was all terribly exciting and dangerous, not to mention good for my posture.

Not exactly sure what one can do with an ipad  in the stadium that you can’t with a iphone,

but thems the rules.

.

Slim Paley Photo

The New York fans love their Jeter and A-Rod !  (I think )

.

.

Slim Paley Photo

Don’t you think I should work for Sports Illustrated?!

.

Slim Paley Photo

You won’t even believe what these are…

Slim Paley photo

Deep Fried TWINKIES. Swear to God.  I guess it goes without saying that the ipad was no longer down the back of my jeans when these were consumed.

.

Slim Paley photo

Of course we all shared these…

.

Don’t want to leave you thinking I’m some rule-breaking, deep fried Twinkie hog…

Slim Paley photo

The good news is; although I forgot to transfer my pedometer into my jeans pocket (like there would have been anymore room – God works in mysterious ways :) )  I definitely walked over 10,000 steps today so all that junk food was totally canceled out.

OK- gotta go check the final score in the Vancouver hockey game.

More from Gotham shortly

Hope you’re enjoying your week so far. Are you counting down to the Big Wedding on Friday or do you think it’s  much ado about nothing?

I must admit, I’m tempted to go down to Soho House at 6am in the morning to have tea & crumpets and give it a watch… so much doom & gloom in the world lately, doesn’t everyone love a beautiful bride?!

PPS. any last minute predictions on the wedding dress?

Today was officially the last day of summer. Sniff… big tear drop falls into Ugg boot.  I will now embrace you Dear Sunflowers, paintbox sunsets, comfort foods and cashmere.  Actually, that doesn’t sound half bad, does it?!  I’m returning to the East Coast towards the end of the week, and although I’m a tad too early to enjoy the turning of the leaves, I do have a few things on the agenda to look forward to.  Firstly, I have dinner booked at Alinea , recently voted the best restaurant ever in Chicago. I’m so excited. I’ve been studying Grant Achatz’ incredible cookbook beforehand as I’m an Alinea Virgin.  Sadly, I hear the 23 course tasting menu has just been slashed to a mere 16.  The nerve of some people.  Do you think I should bring some crackers in my pocket just in case?!

I haven’t been to Chi-town in a few years but it is one of my most favourite cities to visit.

Charles Burchfield

.

After Chicago, our itinerary finds us back in NY where I plan on taking my older son to see the Charles Burchfield (1893-1967) show at the Whitney.  I saw it the last time I was there and found it quite moving.  The manner in which Burchfield painted… repainted…and painted again, revisiting and enlarging the same canvases over the course of many years is just fascinating to me.  This workman-like approach to achieving such delicate beauty…it’s very humbling.  After a stint designing wallpaper (one you will see below) Burchfield decided he would quit his position there and devote himself entirely to his art. Almost immediately after leaving his job, the Great Depression set in.  No Picasso or Singer Sargent was poor Charles. While some of his paintings do portray the bleakness of the Depression era, many others positively vibrate with beauty and light.  The show is on until October 17th. Try to see it if you happen to be in Manhattan.

.

Heatwaves in a Swamp paintings by Charles Burchfield

.

.

My son and I also have tickets to see “Gatz”, a SIX HOUR long production of The Great Gatsby!   I’m already worrying about what to wear to be comfortable.  Don’t you love that my son said he would go with me? My husband’s response…mmmmm not so keen… complete Road Runner cloud.

.

.

And now, just a little Early Autumn Colour Inspiration;

.

Slim Paley photo

I  love Sunflowers against a white marble counter top.  The white flowers  mixed into the arrangement grow like a weed in several places up my driveway.  I have lavender ones too-  I’ve no idea what they’re called.

I’ve talked about this website before,  but for newbies to Slim Paley;  Do NOT go to this website unless you are feeling very, very secure about your cooking abilities.

Like Angelina Jolie secure. Like Giselle in a bikini secure.  OK, now don’t say I didn’t warn you.

PRADA FALL 2010

.

.

As predicted, by yours truly, the heat wave broke pretty much the moment I arrived in NY.  If you are starting to perceive me as one who takes the weather personally… well, we really are getting to know each other, aren’t we?!  I was bound and determined to stay away from Fall focused posts for a couple of more weeks, but under dark skies and rain, my hand has been forced.  It’s a challenge to get great NY photos in the rain- umbrella reflections in the shop windows are wreaking havoc with my genius.  So I leave you with this classic combination of Red, Black & and a hint of White, which appears to be a strong contender for one of the most winning marriages, or should I say Menages A Trois’ for Fall!.

Enjoy

In one of my three most regrettable fashion faux pas  ever- I sold the black Hermes belt with gold hardware  in the photo above on Ebay  because it only fit on the loosest notch at my hips.  I bought it in the early 90′s and for some reason (Scarlet Fever, perhaps?) I never foresaw wearing a belt at the waist again. It felt matronly to me- akin to wearing Mom Jeans.  I know, right?  Ohhh- it’s making me feverish just thinking about it.  I stay far, far away from EBAY now, but somewhere in Australia there is a very, very happy young woman (Do you want to hear the worst/best part? she wrote me afterwards to say she was so thrilled, then added it was her present to herself for having JUST HAD A BABY )  Hey, Australian Girl- if you are reading this,  I changed my mind!  Call me!

Needless to say, I am no longer allowed near the vicinity of the E-Word.

And no, I will not share the other two faux pas… yet.  You’d lose all respect for me..
