Testing Your Metal

..

.

You know-

it’s occurred to me that anyone just happening upon my blog recently might easily mistake it for a travel blog-

 au contraire!

My intention still remains for “Slim Paley” to be about a little bit of everything-God forbid I stick with one thing :)

it’s just the way things have played out this year, I’ve been doing considerably more traveling than is usually the case.

So, I’m taking a break from travel chat for a moment and without any further ado-

Presenting a post on the myriad of metals and shiny surfaces in the worlds of fashion, art and interior design

I’ve come across in my, er… recent travels.

Reflect on these, if you will;

.

.

Heavy metals figured predominately in Alexander McQueen’s Fall collection

.

.

.

.

.

The juxtaposition  of metal & ultra luxe fabrics manipulated in magical ways was a visual feast.

.

.

Versace dress, Robert Lee Morris necklace and cuffs, sterling silver glove by Shaun Leane for Daphne Guinness

Granted, probably not something you’d wear to a dinner party or a first date (unless it was, like, Match.com and you weren’t feeling too hopeful…)

But  never underestimate the trickle down effect of what you see on the runways hitting the streets the following season.

.

Metallic jeans might still be a bit bold

.

.

But who amongst us hasn’t wished for instant Buns of Steel??!

.

.

I’d settle for heels of steel if I knew who made these.

.

.

The metal look tends to read very futuristic

Moschino Winter 2012-2013

.

.

.

Naturally, the incomparable Tom Ford does it to perfection

.

.

Paco Rabanne

.

.

Even if you’re Boho to the bone, there are ways to create  metal allure

.

.

Jenny Packham Spring 2013.

.

If you’re not warming to the idea of cool metal against your skin (excluding jewelry of course!)  perhaps you’d prefer it on the wall?

.

Anish Kapoor

.

and you know the eternal question…

Does this art make us look fat?!

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

I feel badly that I’ve lost the credit for these but I know someone will have them.

.

.

 Guggenheim, Spain

.

I visited Versailles this summer and saw some of Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos’ installations, including this pair of high heels made entirely of  saucepans!  Vasconcelos is the first woman to ever exhibit in the Palace of Versailles, France.

woops-I forgot I wasn’t talking about travel in this post.

It’s gorgeous in the bathroom

(don’t you love the black stick towel holder beside the gleaming metal surface?)

Zing!.

Cool in this kitchen

.

.

Bright silver, two tones of wood, rich copper and touch of delft- someone’s having fun here!

In my kitchen in Sun Valley I also chose pressed silver tiles to brighten up all the reclaimed wood and dark stone counters.

.

A nice example of darker metal and rugged stone

.

and an interesting dialogue between hard metal and soft stacked wood in this modern home.

.

.

Lastly, a short video on a true master of  metal

Maria Pergay

(please allow the video a minute to load)

Ciao!

Do you ever get a song stuck in your head?

So it is for me at the moment with colour blocking and the colour orange.

Good thing orange is one of my favourites.

Once I had  “I shot the Sheriff” stuck in my head for several days. I mean really stuck.

I don’t want to say I hate that song,

but…

I hate that song.

Hermes always gets orange perfect.

Come to think of it, they pretty much get everything perfect- except their  prices :)

.

I have to go now.

This photo has just stirred up the terrible memory of selling my Hermes black & gold Collier de Chien belt on Ebay in a moment of insanity

(convinced I wouldn’t wear belts high on the waist any more)

Ugh! Shake it off Slim, Shake it off!!

.

Even worse, I’m starting to hear “I Shot the Sheriff” in my head again

I’m going to cleanse my mental jukebox with a song that I don’t mind listening to over and over- In fact it’s a favourite;

I dedicate this song to my belt, where ever in Australia it lives now :(
