Happy Easter!

Slim Paley photo

Wishing everyone a beautiful Easter Weekend.

It was indeed an exquisite day here in Santa Barbara, though I’m fending off a touch of melancholy as has been my custom the past few Easters; reminiscing about egg hunts with our little boys and how those days are long gone for us now. Peculiar that this holiday more than any other affects me in this way.  I’ve one photo in particular of my little men with their Easter baskets that almost makes me weep every time I look at it. My older son’s hair is as gold as if the sun itself has bent to kiss him, and younger son is trailing along,  sporting overalls at half-mast and a look that suggests he’s not at all satisfied with the day’s gatherings just yet.

But…

As nature (and Khalil Gibran) remind us

“Life goes not backward, nor tarries with yesterday…”

Columbines photographed today in the garden. I only have this colour at the moment, but I’m on the hunt for the coral and pale yellow combination as well.

I love the little tails that shoot out behind these flowers. They are a sweet addition to a bouquet.

Looks as if we’re going to have another bumper crop of roses this Spring and Summer!

I can barely stand how beautiful the colour of this rose is.

I could almost cry (again. Oh dear…)

Merci to a dear friend for my delicious bonbons

I hope you receive many treasures from your bunny(s) this Easter Morning!

Looking back to Easters past (a post from 2010);  Peeps & Paas

And for newer readers;

if you care to take a peek at the post I hold dearest in my heart  (I warned you I was emotional)

Here; Bringing up Boys  (please do play the music)

and once again,

Happy Easter and Passover to you all!

I‘m delivering  you a posy of ‘Easter Violets’ a little early as I’m off to NY this weekend to visit Older Son.

So excited!

Looking forward to lots and lots of walking with him so that I may enjoy all the dinner reservations we’ve made completely guilt free!

Yes, that might involve a walk to Brooklyn…I hear you…

A very Eastery bouquet in my living room.  Did you know that tulips continue to grow after you cut them?! As much as a couple of inches! Look how much these ones are sticking out of the arrangement.

Measure yours next time if you don’t believe me-

Now would I make that up?!

I served these pretty Lavender Pudds for a Moroccan themed birthday party last week

This recipe is super easy, most unusual and positively yummy!

But YOU win the prize if you can find in the text where it says to add the two tablespoons of butter listed in the ingredients.

We split the difference in case the butter was just a mistake by only adding 1 tablespoon instead of two.

We also cheated a wee bit by using two Revolution Earl Grey Lavender tea bags instead of the fresh lavender- I had tons but weren’t sure how strong the flavour would be.

I used the red & blue food colouring as I didn’t have violet and sprinkled a few candied violets over the top.

(Tea available on Amazon and it’s delicious and sooo fragrant, with a touch of bergamot)

The Wisteria has been positively spectacular this Spring

The colour of these Nicholas Kirkwood booties leaves me weak.

I’d love to paint a room this shade!

Please don’t tell me I’m the only one that sees that happy little dolphin face in the wisteria tree trunk – and no, I’m perfectly sober.

I never drink when I pack…U-Haul would have to be called.

Sadly, I will just be missing “Savage Beauty”, the Alexander McQueen exhibit at the Met.

A perfectly reasonable excuse to return to New York again before July 31st, don’t you agree??

Poor thing- looks like she could have used a Lavendertini

Ps. I say we bring back fresh corsages- how divinely romantic!

In another life I would make fresh ones myself and sell them on Etsy…maybe that’s what I will do when I grow up!

OK, I had better get back to my packing…

Have a spot of lavender tea on me, and Wishing Everyone a very Joyous Easter Weekend!

Happy Peeps, Paws and PAAS!

As a little girl, Easter was one of my favourite holidays.  I always looked forward to buying my PAAS egg colouring kits, the small, feather light boxes feeling disproportionately empty in comparison to the fun and creativity held within.  I remember tearing open the strip of ‘Sweetart’-like dye tablets, custom mixing even then, adding just the right amount of vinegar and water, endlessly dipping, drying and dipping again, until my eggs finally achieved satisfactory hues.   As I recall trying to get the cheap colorless crayon pointy enough to execute my elaborate designs (those built- in sharpeners in crayon boxes always sucked didn’t they? Am I going to hell for saying ‘sucked’ on an Easter post?) the waxy scent-memory instantly returns.  Devising ways to dry my eggs so that the cardboard drying stand didn’t leave a line around them was yet another challenge (feeling sorry for my husband yet?)  We always had hard boiled eggs rather than ones blown empty and I hated having to use the eggs with hairline cracks from the boiling, as the dye would delve into the openings, creating vivid highway maps across my works of art.  These “B-listers” would be the first eaten of course, the egg ‘whites’ leaving lurid stains on my lips and teeth.

Here’s how my eggs did not look.

Yet another holiday memory tatooed upon my early fashion consciousness is the year the Easter Bunny left a pair of crystal (lucite) “high-heeled” mules nestled within my basket of hollow chocolate bunnies and coconut covered Peeps.  The little shoes were adorned with pastel silk flowers- I wore a similar heel by Emma Hope to be married in.  How wonderful I thought myself in those crystal princess pumps- Suri Cruise had nothing on me!!  (Mine, naturally, were only for ‘In house’ My mom had better sense than to stir up the paparazzi on our street :)) Funny how these memories come rushing back so quickly, and yet I can’t recall a name I heard just yesterday. Wait, maybe that’s not so funny…

Fast forward many years later to my favourite Easter memory of all;  My older son as a little boy, worrying that if the door to our home was closed, the Easter Bunny would not be able to reach up to the handle to get in. Awwwww!!  He was SO sweet!
