Loco For Rococo

Well, just as I predicted (genius that I am) while 1/2 the country is elated this week, the other half  is deeply in need of some botox right between the eyebrows.

Sorry I can’t help you with that (Virtual Blogging Botox Party?!) but I can offer some completely over the top, nothing even vaguely tethered to reality escapism for just a couple of minutes.

If you’ve picked up  just one fashion magazine lately no doubt you’ve clocked the fierce force of ornamentation, brocade, bling, bang & baroque that assailed the runways this Fall.

Dolce & Gabbana, Givenchy, Balmain, Alexander McQueen, and Valentino were only some of the big boys that pulled out all the stops with needlepoint and pearls.

Seriously I don’t even want to think about how much these jackets must cost (or how much they weigh for that matter…couture as exercise?)But the exquisite workmanship and beauty  cannot be denied.

Unless of course you’re a dyed in the wool “Grunge” devotee’

In which case these Celine sandals from Spring ’13  might be more up your ballroom

I admit, chances are very slim we’re going to see anyone wearing most of these, but it’s certainly Fantasy Fashion at it’s best.

Speaking of Baroque, Rococo and Fantasy…When I was in Paris a few weeks ago I saw John Malkovich in the Hotel Costes restaurant. (Well, actually one of my girlfriends spotted him-literally the first SECOND we walked in. She’s rather genius at that. She can also read a guest list upside down. In French) It took me a minute or two before my one lasik-ed eye was able to confirm that yes, indeed it was J.M.  He looked, you know, pretty good, pretty cool & pretty louche, much how you would expect John Malkovich to look holding court in a french bar at 1:00am. Afterwards, my friends had a little visit with him and said he was utterly charming. Don’t ask me why I didn’t go with them. If it had been Sawyer I would have.  Anyway (sorry-this is getting so long!) when I got home to Santa Barbara a friend called and said she was having some people over to watch “Dangerous Liaisons” and would I like to come. Would I??!

Do you remember how GOOD that film was and can you believe it was made in 1988??

Does this jog your memory?

Of course we’ve had several films with similar sensibilities since then

Sophia Coppola’s “Marie Antoinette” comes to mind. It was beautiful and fun but didn’t even come close to the naughtiness and wit of “Dangerous Liaisons”

Oh I’ve had so much fun with this post! It’s been one of my favourites.  The sumptuous menswear influence in women’s fashion this Fall has inspired me to pull out all my tailored pieces, vintage waistcoats, manly trousers and brogues. I’m not really a ‘suit’ girl but I’m definitely feeling my inner Kate Hepburn/David Bowie this season. I haven’t quite decided if I’m going “Philadelphia Story” or “Thin White Duke” but  what I do know is that Husband’s closet will be raided.  The good news is he couldn’t care less. He’s always loved me in this look and I don’t think he’s alone there-I think many men find women dressed in masculine attire to be very attractive-How many “Esquire” shots of women in men’s white shirts (and nothing else) have we seen over the years?!

We’ve always ‘stolen from the boys’.  Guess it’s probably because we don’t have quite enough variety in women’s fashion :)

Think Lauren Hutton, Bianca Jagger in her wedding suit, Garbo, Diane Keaton…the list is endless.   The bad news is; my husband’s closet is, to put it mildly, a rather barren territory. Sherpas living on Everest have bigger personal closets than my husband.  So Tom Ford he ain’t, but what he does have, God bless him, I’m more than welcome to filch.

Sons…ahhh, not so much.  Although basket ball shorts and Comicon t-shirts could possibly work with my new Stella McCartney white jacket if say Daphne Guinness or Carine Roitfeld were stopping by to help me accessorize, but somehow I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

I would pay to see Daphne  coming up my gravel driveway in those shoes though.

Speaking of, definitely do check out the men’s/boys department of your favourite department stores.  You can find a ton of stuff there and usually for considerably lower prices than the women’s section.

New York , Paris & London are particularly good for cross over shopping.

“It was Mr. Smith, a distinguished gentleman, who won me over that day. With every bit of class and dignity that one would expect to see in a man on the streets of London. From the horn rimmed glasses to his perfectly polished bespoke oxfords. I was in love with his sophisticated style. The striped oxford is my ode to Mr. Smith and the reflection of grace that I saw shining through the cordovan leather tips of his gorgeous oxfords.” Angela Scott

Ways to soften your “Dude-iness”

.

-Keep your tie loose

(think Don Draper after 3 Manhattans)

.

-Structured clothes- soften the hair

-Wear a little blush ( channeling my mother “Would it kill you to put on a little blush ?!”)

.

-Keep it slouchy

(although honestly, these pants look like they could be coming or going, don’t they?)

-A soft white t-shirt will help keep you comfortable under a structured jacket.

Don’t be a stiff!

.

-A touch of lace says “Hey- you still need to open the door for me”!

.

.

-Suspenders can be cute (if you’re still relatively young, or conversely, very old (just not in the middle) & not too well gifted in the chestal area)

-try adding  tie-pins or nice blingy brooches or both along your suspenders.

.

-Take a note from Older Son (or as we fondly call him “Mr. N.Y.”) and don’t wear socks OR laces with your brogues- OK, now you’re very cool too!

Have fun with your accessories!

Was it just me, or did you notice a dearth of black this year at the Academy Awards?!  Other than Madame Stone, who worked the black theme and then some, I’d have to say it was the least amount of noir I’ve ever seen at an awards show.

For me, Black still remains my Go To “Colour” when in doubt (which is more often than I care to admit)

and what girl isn’t a pushover for a beautiful touch of black lace?!

Did you participate in Black Friday?! The whole concept of the crowds and parking madness makes me shudder.  I saw that some stores opened at 4 a.m. !  I saw commercials of women exercising…getting prepped for the event- might have been for “Target”, I’m not sure.  Not that I don’t love a good Target run as much as the next savvy shopper.  It comes second only to Costco in providing me with the most things I never realized I needed until the moment I see them.  I think there might be a “tense” problem in that last sentence, but I’m so tired and I’m dashing to get this posted before Sunday or I’ll have to change the entire premise.   In any case, this Thanksgiving weekend marks yet another year  I didn’t get all (any) of my Christmas shopping done before December 1st as I promised myself I would.  For those of you that have finished already- I am GREEN with envy!   I might have to go pour myself some Absynthe just to drown my sorrows…

MOSCHINO  Fall 2010

.

.

I was going to save this Black Gold post for a date a little closer to Christmas (so festive, this combination, after all) but with the just released news of actress Carrie Mulligan being cast in Baz Luhrmann’s remake of The Great Gatsby…

…coinciding with the release of Penguin Books’ gorgeous new  Art Deco editions of F.Scott Fitzgerald’s novels just last week (to coincide with the 70th anniversary of his death) …

which also coincides (Pause. Take breath. Appreciate the amount of times I’ve worked “coincide” into this so far)

with having just seen The Elevator Repair Service’s  6 hour production (!!) of “GATZ” last month in NY with my older son… BTW, we loved it!

.

Still from the  production of GATZ (click here for info.)

I thought to myself;

“Slim- The Black Gold Gods are sending you a sign! do not ignore this!

There’s still plenty of time to get the final Thanksgiving post up.  After all, it’s not like you have anything else to do :) )

.

So, let’s start with the remake;

“First look” at Carrie Mulligan for Gatsby

.

Sorry, don’t really love this casting.  I hope I’m wrong, but I think that Daisy needs to be not only heart-breakingly beautiful, but very fragile and ethereal…more like Natalie Portman

.

(hey- want to get sort of depressed on your Sunday? Google photos of Natalie Portman).

or Kiera Knightley

Who would you like to see as Daisy Buchanon? (or are you happy with C.M.?)  How about for Gatsby?!

.

Mia Farrow and Robert Redford as Daisy and Gatsby.

There’s a plethora of naysayers and negativity out there already with regard to this remake of Gatsby, but the truth is even the Redford/Farrow one wasn’t really great- it just looked good. Robert Redford pretty much made anything look great in those days.  Maybe Baz Luhrmann will create something really magical here. I hope so-  I just wish he’d called me about the casting.  Maybe he thought I was too busy with my new friendship with La HRH or something.

Leonardo DiCaprio is set to play Gatsby and Toby Macguire is Nick Carraway.

.

Meanwhile, a few more Black & Gold images for your enjoyment…

After all the traditional colours of Autumn draw to a finale this week, it will be time to get your Deco on!
