Meanwhile, Back in London…

David Bowie

Meanwhile, back in London…

The town was abuzz not only with the 60 year Coronation anniversary, but also the Bowie exhibition at the Victoria & Albert museum.

Needless to say, being the dyed in the wool Bowie Fangirl I am, there was no way we were going to miss the show!

V & A

A beautiful summer day on the steps of the V & A, London

David Bowie

The show was good, slick and definitely worth seeing

David Bowie

In my humble opinion however , it could have been bigger. Granted there was and continues to be SO much great material to document over Bowie’s decades long career, but it’s not like the V & A doesn’t have the room…and I’m sure the budget must have been formidable.

David Bowie Aladdin Sane

Then again, perhaps it’s fitting to leave the show feeling the man still remains a bit of an enigma (aren’t you glad I didn’t say chameleon :-) )

Royal Academy of Arts London

We were also just in time for the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition Preview party

London Royal Academy of Arts

Where the fashion and art world’s ongoing love affair with fluorescents was to be clocked everywhere.

People,  the “Red Carpet” was green!

fluorescent belt

Even the canapés were served on glowing fluorescent green trays. (fyi-I didn’t eat all those)

Though I felt slightly underdressed (it’s a long story) at least my belt matched the theme of the evening.

Leaving the party to go to “Le Caprice” off Piccadilly for a late dinner with old friends

Le Caprice London

A restaurant we frequented-yikes, often and more years ago than I really care to divulge, and it’s still as busy as ever.

Though the signage remains the same, the interior has enjoyed a subtle face-lift.

Hmmm…oh forget it. I can go back to the same places, but I’ll never get the old face back, and that’s OK.

No, really, it’s fine. Pass the whine. I mean the wine.

Purple Bentley

BTW, If you were going to buy a Bentley, would you pick purple?!

And lest one precious moment of London time was wasted, a girlfriend and I also took in the arts & antiques fair at Olympia.

Where I became quite fascinated with this 3D piece. Doesn’t it look like an aerial view of a crowd of people milling about?

Art, London

Closer inspection reveals it’s simply tiny dollops of layers of paint. Very clever.

Sadly, I’m unable to find my program from the show at the moment so I cannot credit the artist.

Gerard Mas

My friend was taken with this cheeky Bazooka bubblegum snapping Renaissance-looking maiden, carved in alabaster no less, by the artist Gerard Mas.

The subtly veined and translucent nature of the alabaster made her appear unsettling life-like. It also made me want to wear more sunscreen.

Our last evening found us at the ridonkulously chic “5 Hertford St.”  in Mayfair, just off Curzon St.

5 Hertford St. London

The good news is it’s owned and very personally presided over by Robin Birley, son of the infamous Mark Birley who ran “Annabel’s” in Mayfair for forever and a day

item40.rendition.slideshowWideVertical.lou-lou-ss42

The family are true restaurant and private nightclub royalty-oh the stories they could tell! and wow, Birley’s newest establishment does not disappoint.

item0.rendition.slideshowWideHorizontal.lou-lou-ss01a

Robin and Lucy Birley

The decor was conceived  by 80′s & 90′s renowned fashion designer Rifat Ozbek, though I can’t imagine that Robin Birley and his wife (Bryan Ferry’s ex) didn’t also have a strong hand in final ambiance  of the place.

item36.rendition.slideshowWideVertical.lou-lou-ss38

The bar area in “Loulou’s” downstairs

Downstairs is like Safari-meets-The Water Babies. Sorry if that’s a difficult visual to summon up, but that’s how it felt, so overcome was I with the general effect. Upstairs, you just want to live in every single room, sit by the multiple fire places, smoking cigars whilst reading Maugham and discussing the merits of whippets above all other canines with Mr. Birley himself. (Who I just happened to see carrying his one grey whippet down the stairs in his arms, with the other close to heel. It was The Perfect English Moment)

The Bad News is, and this is pretty bloody bad-it’s private.

One must know Some One in order to get One’s self through the very discreet little door of “5 Hertford St”

So, if your travels include a trip to London on the horizon, One best get on the horn and start calling friends, friends of friends, bosses of friends, and listen, if things get desperate, even rebuilding a broken friendship bridge or two if necessary.

This is one of the chicest, coolest places I’ve been to.

And I really don’t think it’s just because I love London so much.

PS. Don’t flipping tell anyone I snapped the photo of the dining room  with the roses above-I imagine they don’t take kindly to people clicking away with their iPhones.

IMG_5466

PPS. Can’t tell a porkie-pie, I also snapped the flowers in the Ladie’s room.

Who could resist these and who does it hurt, pray tell??

OK, and really, really, lastly…cause it’s like 2am in the morning here,

Royal Baby in the Bedroom

We’re on High Alert Royal Baby Watch now are we not?!

I shot this little “Instagram”vignette in our guest room in honour of the Big Event.

I love that CNN announced today that ‘Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge are eagerly awaiting the birth of either a boy or a girl!”

Genius.

Righty ho, time for me to go to bed and dream of England!

What are you doing in your part of the world right now?!

xxSP.

It’s now even later than 2am so excuse any typos-I might as well be running a nightclub at this hour.

Coat check tag, please. And No, I don’t have any change.

“Let All The Children Boogie”

david_bowie

Today I must wish David Bowie (My First Love) a very Happy 66th Birthday!

And with his birthday comes some very exciting news; the release of a single from his brand new album due out in March (his first in a decade)

418099_522514231112695_703701824_n

Hear it once and tell me if you don’t want to just keep replaying it again & again.

My love affair with David began when I was 14 yrs. old. The memories that flood back when I play Bowie (which I do on a regular basis, “Hunky Dory” being my all time favourite) are so achingly visceral I could still be sitting in my childhood bedroom. How sweet would that be sometimes?!

hunky-dory

Along with Marc Bolan and Robert Plant, David was always there for me throughout those (mortifyingly late) hormonally tempestuous times.

Bolan was my escape to all the platformed 70′s glamour that I dreamed awaited me the moment I eventually bolted small town life.

Robert Plant was, well, Robert Plant.

Screen Shot 2013-01-08 at 1.37.52 PM

Honestly, this was going to be a quick post until I stumbled upon the Robert Plant Tumblr – wtf-reedonkoolus. Don’t even go there if you want to get anything done today.

Don’t look up Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour Tumblr either.

davidgilmour6Just saying.

david-bowie-young-americans-bigbut David… oh, where could I ever begin with David?

He was my boyfriend and my girlfriend. Emotionally ensconced in my heart and head, he was my soulmate and divine inspiration. While other girls imagined Carol King, Joni and Carly were reading their innermost thoughts, my friends were kooks, genies and spiders from Mars. Hey-I was 15. While teachers admonished, David’s lyrics ran through my mind;

“And if the homework brings you down then we’ll throw it in the fire and take the car downtown…”  yeess!

DavidBowiePA180412

When bodily bits didn’t sprout on schedule and pimples Vesuviously erupted at the most inopportune of times, David’s gaunt visage gazed reassuringly down at me (Plant-y looked slightly put off and I don’t think Marc cared a bit.) With his gorgeous bones, snaggle teeth (which sadly he fixed, for which I eventually forgave him ) and long skinny legs, my one dimensional poster hero brought me countless hours of unconditional happiness. My gawky, stick insect, over-bited, still-waiting-for everything-to happen-self pretended not to hear my parents incessant “Turn that music DOWN!!” as David and I fought the world together…while figuring out what we were going to wear.

My grief was deep the day Marc Bolan tragically died. So terribly young.

and I still love Robert Plant. He’s remained cool despite, let’s face it, having turned into the Cowardly Lion. (Honestly, I can’t even include his photo now after the young one above)

but Bowie,

ap-people-david-bowie-4_3_r560He’s still the real deal.

The new video is very odd. Of course and thank goodness.

Bing, Bowie, Moss & Memories

.

The seemingly ageless, legendary model and style icon Kate Moss graces yet ANOTHER Vogue cover;

This time it’s French Vogue’s December “Christmas in Music” issue.

.

We all have our favorite Christmas tunes- those that bring memories flooding back, hopefully mostly good!

For me, David Bowie tugs my heart strings on two levels during the holidays. He and Marc Bolan were my absolute FAVOURITISTEVER, so few were my Christmas Lists that didn’t have David Bowie and Marc Bolan on them…and BTW, I mean David Bowie & Marc Bolan, the actual men, not just the albums.

“Aim high, you never know” has always been my motto!

Sadly, Santa only ever delivered them in one dimension, but you’ve gotta keep that Christmas Dream alive- there’s always next year!

When David Bowie’s rendition of “Little Drummer Boy” with Bing Crosby first surfaced I thought it was just the coolest thing ever. Imagine two wildly successful performers from such different planets coming together to sing this classic Christmas tune?  Of course these days, everyone is dueting with everyone, including Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett, but back in the day, this felt pretty special:

Fancy a cuppa tea in these gorgeous flame colored tea glasses from Mariage Freres? I’d love to randomly scatter several of them across a white table cloth at Christmas; put votives in some and puffs of narcissus  in others accompanied by mossy green linen napkins.

Wouldn’t that be gorgeous?!

Tis not the first time Our Lady of Moss has paid tribute to Our Thin White Duke on the cover of Vogue.

This was such a great issue I actually kept it from May, 2003

And speaking of rock royalty, this is my all time favorite dead posh tea cozy, also from Mariage Freres

Oh I’ve had so much fun with this post! It’s been one of my favourites.  The sumptuous menswear influence in women’s fashion this Fall has inspired me to pull out all my tailored pieces, vintage waistcoats, manly trousers and brogues. I’m not really a ‘suit’ girl but I’m definitely feeling my inner Kate Hepburn/David Bowie this season. I haven’t quite decided if I’m going “Philadelphia Story” or “Thin White Duke” but  what I do know is that Husband’s closet will be raided.  The good news is he couldn’t care less. He’s always loved me in this look and I don’t think he’s alone there-I think many men find women dressed in masculine attire to be very attractive-How many “Esquire” shots of women in men’s white shirts (and nothing else) have we seen over the years?!

We’ve always ‘stolen from the boys’.  Guess it’s probably because we don’t have quite enough variety in women’s fashion :)

Think Lauren Hutton, Bianca Jagger in her wedding suit, Garbo, Diane Keaton…the list is endless.   The bad news is; my husband’s closet is, to put it mildly, a rather barren territory. Sherpas living on Everest have bigger personal closets than my husband.  So Tom Ford he ain’t, but what he does have, God bless him, I’m more than welcome to filch.

Sons…ahhh, not so much.  Although basket ball shorts and Comicon t-shirts could possibly work with my new Stella McCartney white jacket if say Daphne Guinness or Carine Roitfeld were stopping by to help me accessorize, but somehow I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

I would pay to see Daphne  coming up my gravel driveway in those shoes though.

“It was Mr. Smith, a distinguished gentleman, who won me over that day. With every bit of class and dignity that one would expect to see in a man on the streets of London. From the horn rimmed glasses to his perfectly polished bespoke oxfords. I was in love with his sophisticated style. The striped oxford is my ode to Mr. Smith and the reflection of grace that I saw shining through the cordovan leather tips of his gorgeous oxfords.” Angela Scott

Ways to soften your “Dude-iness”

.

-Keep your tie loose

(think Don Draper after 3 Manhattans)

-Structured clothes- soften the hair

-Wear a little blush ( channeling my mother “Would it kill you to put on a little blush ?!”)

-Keep it slouchy

Of course she does it perfectly.

-Roll your sleeves up, especially for day

-A soft white t-shirt will help keep you comfortable under a structured jacket.

Don’t be a stiff!

.

-A touch of lace says “Hey- you still need to open the door for me”!

.

.

-Suspenders can be cute (if you’re still relatively young, or conversely, very old (just not in the middle) & not too well gifted in the chestal area)

-try adding  tie-pins or nice blingy brooches or both along your suspenders.

.

-Take a note from Older Son (or as we fondly call him “Mr. N.Y.”) and don’t wear socks OR laces with your brogues- OK, now you’re very cool too!

.

Have fun with your accessories!

On one of my very first posts on S.P., back in July, I posted a YouTube video as it related to my trip to Japan.  I am posting it here again for Christmas being that it is one of my all time favourite pieces of music. It’s  called “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” from the movie of the same name starring David Bowie.   I can’t tell you how beautiful this is- you MUST give it a listen.  I could have just downloaded the music, but I prefer to include the video of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s live performance as it is SO passionate.   BTW, can I have hair like that in my next life?  In fact, while we’re at it, I’d like to play the piano like that too.  Hey- it’s Christmas- one can dream…
