Summer Countdown

.

Morning dew.

.

Know what??

Summer officially begins, at least here in the Northern hemisphere, at 7:09pm EST(not that I’m counting) on June 20th.

  Holy @#$%^&.

That means there’s a lot to do in order to get ready to relax!

It also means there are only 12 more days to be bathing suit ready.

THE HORROR!

That seriously just made me want to have a cocktail.

But I’m starting tomorrow. I might even weigh myself. No joke.

Want to try and be good with me? Come on. It will be fun!

Feel free to write in with suggestions for Easing into Summer with work out tips, quick, easy recipes (they don’t really have to be low-cal 🙂 ), great summer music, books, fun new ‘Apps’, movies, anything at all summer related you feel like sharing.

In the meantime, I’m revisiting my December mode of blogging, which means I’ll be posting much shorter posts, but more often.

I’ll be traveling and making use of my iPhone  ‘Apps’ so follow along by clicking on the “Pinterest” and “Tumblr” & “Facebook” links above if you like.

I’ve even joined “Instagram”. It’s a whole new me.

I just can’t figure out how to get the damn link to turn into a button, but I’ll get it before summer is over, I promise you that.

My Instagram thingy; Follow @slimpaley

I snapped this amazing plant on a morning hike yesterday. It was huge!

A little Sophia inspiration to get us started

Are we feeling it yet??

  1. I am getting my yard summer ready by adding lots of blue, white and pink plantings. Sundresses are hanging in the closet, walking shorts done up and in drawers, A cute pair of JCrew green walking shorts on their way to my house, plus a darling Kate Spade bag for summer. No swimsuits in my future, but I will be sitting by my pool enjoying ice tea and all the swimmers splashing in the pool. I am almost ready, need a pedicure with some pinkalicious polish and I am good to go.
    Happy Summer to you Slim,
    Kathysue

  2. Ahhh Slim. Do you have to get all high tech on us? When my daughter gets back from her semester abroad (in TelAviv with a last gasp in Greece) maybe she’ll be grateful enough to teach me these new fangled thingies like twitter, etc.
(sorry I have to name drop her travels because I can’t afford us all to be en voyage)
I’ll be happy if I can find a simple black one piece like Sophia’s with no bits and bobs thank you. Is she on a boat?

    • How much fun is your daughter going to have in Greece?! 🙂
Yes, I believe Sophia is on a boat. Isn’t it the most gorgeous photo?

  3. Oh yes, I am starting with my DIL next week when she is back from Vacation…thinking Weight Watchers to get going!

    Oh those dew drops!

  4. I do love that rose photo! And I am completely ready for summer, but definitely not bathing suit ready! But you have to love a little Sophia! Especially since she says she owes it all to pasta! I wish! xoxo

  5. Well, doesn’t Ms. Loren look lush…and HAPPY!!!

Thank you for posting this photo…although my 18 year old daughter would never be mistaken for Sophia, in this photo the resemblance is uncanny. It has not only captured Sophia’s genuine happiness (God knows, maybe more than 40, 50 years ago)…it has captured the same giddy spirit that bubbles exuberance daily from my own little piece of heaven I call my daughter.

  6. Love the roses you photographed! And yes, horror has set in! I’m leaving in the morning for Kiawah Island, SC and I’m not quite bathing suit ready. Shoot! I did get a last minute SPANX bathing suit, but I can’t decide if it’s really me or just the panicked me. (I’m not sure I want to wear anything called Spanx when it’s hot…thoughts?) Also I am bringing running shoes for jogging, but haven’t done that in about 5 years…darn. However, to get in the spirit, I’m trying lots of water with lemon, eating tasty gazpacho, cutting down on cocktails and chocolates (if that can last), and am bringing my big camera to the beach as it makes me happy.

    Look out summer…

    • I adore gazpacho- that is a summer must. Perhaps I will share my recipe for white gazpacho again.

  7. Your roses are the most beautiful ever! And what a great photo – I can practically smell them!

  8. I’ve hopped on the Instagram Bandwagon as of Monday, (user name faux fuchsia) and am loving it Absolutely SICK! Luff the speed and immediacy of the whole shebang.

Meanwhile I am freezing half to death here as winter has well and truly arrived.

I miss summer but I have a wardrobe full of winter clobber that needs wearing, so I don’t really mind.

Sophia is the Bomb. I luff her quote “Everything you see I owe to pasta”

Something in that for all of us really x

  9. Sophia looks relaxed, happy, carefree,( and hot!) on that boat. Just the way
Summer should make us all feel! My summer tip…. Soak up the Sun! (with SPF 110 of course!) and Have lots of Fun!

  10. Extraordinary pictures! Here comes a new summer. 3 weeks of camp scheduled for the kid and a new attitude and body for me. I just bought a new bathing suit because I lost the ten pounds to make feel pretty darned good about being me. Teeth whitened, spray tan’s next. Vanity is well worth the time and effort..I’m waiting for the beautiful Crepe Myrtles to bloom and then it[s officially summmer.
Thanks for reminding me to think.

  11. Not feeling summer here it’s cold! great to see you appreciate the great Aussie cossie by Zimmerman. BTW don’t think Sophia thought about being cossie ready

  12. 2 awesome and inspirational memoirs that I couldn’t put down – Breaking Night by Liz Murray and WILD by Cheryl Strayed. Both will make you laugh and cry… excellent summer reads (although nothing much to do with summer in particular!)

  13. Summer in Anchorage, Alaska…well, lots of daylight, that’s for sure. We have 5 1/2 hours of “dark”. But not really. This time of year it gets dim, not dark. I have beautiful 100% cotton sheets with a high thread count. Sometimes, I even iron them. Ironed sheets, what a luxury. Have you tried it? Time for bed!

  14. Ooh, I am not ready in any way shape or form (alas literally) and it’s too late as summer is already here in the South of France! Yesterday I wore a black maxi dress to cover my pasty white, stubbly legs and it ended up feeling like I was baking in a burqua! Heeeelp.

We are trying to eat lighter in the evening as the French folk do–gazpacho, greek salads and the like. Save for the coq au vin last night. And the lamb the night before that. Oops.

    Music? The new Melody Gardot.

  15. I am getting my Summer reading list comprised and will be reading a novel a week.
Watermelon is supposed to be a good fat burner and I saw a delicious recipe for cubed watermelon with feta cheese salad – a good homemade vinaigrette dressing and toss.

    ♥♥♥
    Sue

  16. Hi Slim,
Leen’s lemonade poster is charming, but it seems they’ve forgotten one of the tastiest additions to lemonade – Pimms!
Inspired by your week of spa food, I’ve lost 15 pounds by eating more fruits and veggies and less of most everything else. I still don’t think I’ll don a swimming suit, even though that floral one is adorable.
A summer tip I’ve discovered is self-tanner for the legs – La Prairie is very subtle and makes me feel ready for summer.
Your rose photo is absolutely stunning in its gorgeousness! Thanks for sharing it.
    Best regards,
    Ruth

      • I still can’t quite believe it, but it’s true – dropped a whole dress size. And I thank you for the inspiration to eat healthy foods – it works!

  17. I am in London and spied a Havaiana’s Flip Flop store. Much to my surprise you can custom make your summer flip flops. So, I customized a few and added my own unique stamp of summer, a Swarovski crystal on each pair.

  18. Slim, I too love summer and I am looking forward to more posts! Sometimes plugins don’t play nice with one another, so you may want to try a different one for the Instagram link. You may also add an image that is linked into a widget, (this is just a liitle piece of html). I use WP a lot, happy to help if you need anything.

    • Thanks Eileen. When I go to insert the code “Followgram” provides for a follow button, (which looks like this)
      http://followgram.me/slimpaley/widget

Where do I put it?? I tried dragging it directly under my “Tumblr” button but that didn’t work, yet it works embedded directly into a post, as you can see.

    • No, I tried both the “vanity”url and the “Follow Button” code, but both of them end up looking like they do as you can see right now below my Tumblr button.

      • Shoot, the code worked on my blog just fine in a text box. I will come up with a plan b and get back to you.

      • You seem to be an early adapter to followgram.me and there must be kinks that are not yet published, I think you are having a plugin conflict if the code won’t work in a text widget. I would first try the code in a different widget text box to see if it works in another spot (maybe the last widget all by itself – just to test). To achieve the image as a link to Followgram.me I would take the little image, right click on it and save it as a photo. Then go into your post, upload the photo, in the link url add http://followgram.me/slimpaley – toggle over to html, copy the code, go back to the widget, beneath tumblr and paste the code. That should give you the image that links off of your blog and onto Instagram. These directions may make it sound more complicated than it is, but it should take about 3 minutes.

  19. I’m getting ready for summer by finally taking swimming lessons. I’ve gone 44 years not knowing how to dive, swim freestyle, back stroke, breast stroke and butterfly but now I do. I even learned how to do a flip turn. Now to work on those hunger pangs I get after swimming…

    • Congratulations Terri- that is a real accomplishment. I have never dived. In my life. Now I’m too afraid to learn.

  20. Okay, I’ll probably be the ONLY one to admit it but…Ihatesummer…there I said it really fast.
The heat, humidity, mosquito’s, lime disease, ticks, fleas, weeds, noisy neighbors playing loud music, people wearing way too little clothing when they really shouldn’t be, hair removal, sunburn. I do love the flowers and fruits & veggies tho. However every June 1st I find myself longing for Sept 1st.

  21. Okay, I’m with Carol…I really am not a fan of summer. Maybe since wearing a bathing suit is such a horrible notion at this stage in my life I just want the warm weather to do its thing and let me get back to wearing long sleeves and turtlenecks! 🙂
But I’ll play along, I’m open minded and flexible, honest.
    Karen

  22. Thanks for the summer inspiration! It’s rainy and cold here and I can’t believe June is half over (almost) so you have no idea how much your post has picked me up this morning. Summer fun to me is; fresh berries, light reading, short shorts, beach fires, unkempt hair, long nights, margaritas, a glass of wine under the stars, aloe jelly to soothe the first sunburn. That pic of Sophia is gorgeous! Thanks, Slim and cheers to summer time!

  23. Instagram? I don’t even know what it is and I think I want to keep it that way (after looking at Eileen’s promptings 🙂
I’m leaving on Thursday night for the summer & there is way too much to do & pack up before leaving….I barely have had time to look at myself in the mirror or hop on a scale…well I suppose I could make time. As for me, I’m so stretched for time these days that I don’t have much of a chance to workout. And I don’t know about you but I now have these love handles I’ve never ever had thanks to lack of estrogen! And I can’t decide on bio-identical hormones but that’s a whole other topic…maybe we should discuss at some point though it’s not exactly home & garden oriented!???!!
Now I have a question for you…I’m actually painting flowers at this very moment & I need to be able to take awesome photographs. I rarely use my 35 mm & I know I’ve seen you holding a point-and-shoot or maybe a hybrid? Would you be so kind as to share what brand-model camera you use? My bimbo camera doesn’t do so well other than for parties…
    Thanks in advance.
    Melissa
PS. One thing is certain: I could definitely cut down on my cocktail consumption!

    • “And I don’t know about you but I now have these love handles I’ve never ever had thanks to lack of oestrogen!”

Ugh. The dreaded “Muffin Top”-Recently become acquainted with it myself.
But cutting back on cocktails?? Desperate times call for desperate measures. I guess.

I use two cameras a little Panasonic Lumix and a Leica D-Lux 5.

      • Thanks for the camera info, Slim. I’m sitting in traffic on I 95 & thought I’d check out my blogs. Kinda curious why I’m appearing as “PainterPhD,” my sign in name (I guess that means ‘user’ and not by my actual name & gravatar, Melissa Shelly?? I’m the one whose doggy died…:(
Don’t understand these nuances! Have a great w/e in SV. Happy Father’s Day w/e to your man.
        Love,
        Melissa

      • I just realized that I have a Panasonic Lumix & obviously don’t use it like you!!! I don’t think you photographed these roses with that device?! I need lessons or have to break out the real deal Nikon! Thanks again, M xo

    • Oh no, don’t let me tech directions put you off! Honestly, in college I didn’t even know the code to get into my sorority house, this isn’t that complicated 🙂 Enjoy your paining and photography, and of course cocktails!

  25. Hello, I just wanted to say I’m ready and excited for all things Summer. Thank you for your posts. Love the photo of the Mexican Grass Tree Dasylirion. I have one in my yard and want more, I’m a sucker for anything that reminds me of the desert. Pray for a sun breakthrough today!

  26. One sure fire way to wiggle into that bathing suit is to eat a LOT of watermelon for several days. It serves as a diuretic and is much more filling that one would think. As for books, I recommend a read, or even a re-read-of Rumer Godden’s ‘A Greengage Summer’-an evocative look at five English children and the time they spent in France one summer a long time ago. It’s perfect.

  27. Loved this post Slim, lol. “Shalag” not to worry about those lbs.-they found a great home!!! I was going to ask about Instagram also, but forget that. I had “Wild” on my list too. Sofia, my how stunning is she ? “Every Dog has Her Day! ”
    Your roses are simply divine.
Sorry about your weather “Lisat”. I am hearing that from many, however when the good weather comes, your city is stunning. Happy Summer.

Would love to hear from you!
