HAPPY HALLOWEEEEEEN!!!!!!
Some lovely Halloween inspired passementerie by the very talented Jessica Light Trimmings UK
Thank you so much to all who responded to the previous post and especially for sharing your own personal experiences as well!
Very funny and I will credit you all in my “Fifty Fahbulous Ways to Bag a Bat” book available on Amazon soon!
In the meantime, I’ve styled my “Next Encounter With The Dark Prince” wardrobe. It’s a tad chicer than what my husband cobbled together for his performance the other night , but to be fair, he didn’t have the gift of time.
But I SHALL be ready – Vampires seldom ring ahead…
I’m having a super tough time deciding between these two looks.
The bottom one is sexier, that goes without saying really, but the top one will showcase which ever shoe I ultimately choose as well as provide much more neck protection.
(Victor & Rolf)
What say you?
My choice for a clutch is a No Brainer (literally :))
My gloves;
Duchess of Windsor- Girl, Eat your heart out!
Oh Hellooo. I might just wear these Monday for No special reason
But then again, These Louboutins are also very “wingy”
Wouldn’t you know, I can’t decide on the shoes either.
.
Chanel “Steel” on the toes, of course.
What I’ll be drinking…
Blavod black vodka
What I’ll be burning…
Modern Alchemy “Dia De Los Muertos” (Day of the Dead) candle

And while I await said Dark Prince sweeping into my life again, I might check in with a few scary old flicks;
The Haunting of Hill House (1964)
“An evil old house, the kind some people call haunted, is like an undiscovered country waiting to be explored. Hill House had stood for ninety years and might stand for ninety more. Silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.”
Who could leave a hand or foot hanging off the bed a centimeter, after seeing this movie the first time?!
Black Christmas (1974)
with Olivia Hussey and Margo Kidder
Possibly the first “Don’t pick up that phone!” movie?!
Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
I know the movie is a little dated (my son thought the pay off wasn’t as scary as he’d expected after all the build up) and quite frankly if I’d been Mia I think I would have murdered the neighbours before my second trimester, but I never tire of watching John Cassavetes, despite him being such a $%^* in this movie.
The Innocents (1961)
I rarely go to horror films anymore- they got too scary, no make that too dark and morbid for me. I prefer the “oldies”
The original Body Snatchers with Kevin McCarthy
Donald Sutherland in the remake of The Body Snatchers
One of the rare instances the remake is almost as good as the original
And who could ever forget this little girl in
The Bad Seed ??!
and my vote for one of the saddest scenes ever in a horror film;
Frankenstein
You gotta love the guy.
I read somewhere that this film was good, so I ordered it to watch tonight.
I reserve the right to add to my list if something else comes to me later, but I need to get this post up before it’s Thanksgiving.
What are some of your all time FAVOURITES??
And if you’re hitting the streets tonight (with your kids that is…or, what the hell, even without kids)
Wishing you lots of fun and bulging pillowcases!
.~
I am such a Halloween scrooge. I wish, I really do, that I loved it as much as you and so many other people do.
Now Thanksgiving, THAT’S a holiday I can get into !!!!!
Can’t WAIT for those posts, Slim!
Yummmmmm
Sherry
Quite a bit of research went into this post! I love it! Clever as always..
We don’t really get into it here but the children have decided this year that they love it. We have had great fun, great food. Children just love scaring themselves stupid don’t they?
Scariest film ever is Don’t Look Now set in Venice with Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland. Every time I see a red cape I get goosebumps.!!
Oh yes, that film is super creepy! It has such a dank feel about it too, you can almost smell the mold- definitely a roaring fire and cashmere blanket for this one!
hi slim,
i’m a big scaredy cat when it comes to movies. the scariest movie i’ve ever seen is…what lies beneath with harrison ford and michelle pfeiffer. that’s as far as i can go.
i do remember watching the bad seed when i was a little girl and it was so scary to me.
those fashions scare me too. although i do like the nailpolish.
a really good friend of mine just told me that she has a ghost in her house. it’s not an ethereal figure like in the movies but rather a solid form. it’s a teenage girl and her small dog. she appears in the hallway and several family members have seen her. she is not a sinister ghost and they are not at all scared. i’d have to move.
do you believe in ghosts?
~janet
Hi Janet
That Bad Seed kid just chilled me to the bone. She reminded me of a girl I went to school with at around that age (in looks only not temperament, Thank God) who always brought shrimp mayonnaise sandwiches on white bread with the crusts removed to school. There is something slightly suspect about that though when all the other kids are eating peanut butter & jelly !
I don’t NOT believe in Ghosts (like my son; “My head is not Not shaved’) but we’ve lived in a house that was built in 1895 for over 17 years now and none of us have ever encountered any spectral beings at all. Nary a Boo! Perhaps we make up for it with all our wild animal activity.
I see where it’s a tough call between outfit #1 and outfit #2. I’m leaning towards the second one (a) it’s cuter than #1 and (b) would be much easier to move around in if things get crazy with the dark prince.
Hats off to Mr SP for valiantly rescuing you the other night and A+ for the outfit he threw together on short notice.
I will not be watching a horror movie tonight. Still recovering from the time I watched Rosemary’s Baby in 1972. 🙂
Happy Halloween
Dear Linny- I like your practicality- I hadn’t thought about ease of movement, just cuteness!
Love it! Wittily acerbic post!
CC
How do you just keep getting better and better? I am always looking forward to what Slim
has on her agenda. Thanks for all the entertainment.
Look for a British movie, Jacques Tourneur’s Curse of the Demon, released in 1957.
You nailed it, Slim; The Haunting of Hill House is the scariest film ever and the book is scary too. Nothing comes close. Of course, I’m too much of a fraidy cat to watch anything with blood.
No scary movies for me either Linny.
Great post though. That has truly got to be the most beautiful sun set photo I have ever seen!!!! Love the Chanel polish, pumps with spiky things. Would love to taste that black Blavod vodka some time.
Another great post Slim.
Happy Halloween ox.
BBB we could drink the Blavod together while painting our nails with “Steel”.
xx
Rosemary’s Baby is my favorite. I am not a big Halloween person, but love seeing the little ones, as long as they don’t have their dressed up parents with them, bag in hand.
You have created quite a post here with all of the Halloween must haves! That dog costume is a hoot. I guess you couldn’t find a picture of Sawyer dressed up for Halloween, haha. I will leave that one alone for now.
Those gloves are a must have. There are places here that those would come in handy. Just saying.
I hope that you and your family have a great Halloween. Boo!
Teresa
“… a centimeter off the bed…” ykm.
My hub and I are going to watch “The Gift” tonight. Is it scary? Three of my scariest: The Fly (original), The Birds, and Sybil (by far the creepiest ever!).
Like you, Slimmy—I haven’t seen a so-called horror movie in years.(I think 1979’s ‘Alien’ pretty much did it for me.) I stick to my favorites. Of course, Polanski’s ‘Rosemary’s Baby’, with that long shot of Ruth Gordon talking on the telephone. Who among us didn’t want to stand up and shout ‘hurray’ when Mia lobbed a big one in Cassavetes’ face!!! ‘Don’t Look Now’–directed by Nicolas Roeg and based on a superb short story by Daphne du Mauirier is a highly erotic spooky / creepy movie. For sheer beauty and creepiness I always watch Michael Powell’s masterpiece, ‘Black Narcissus’, with that ONE scene that always makes me jump several feet out of my seat. The Frankenstein of all the Frankenstein movies is the Grand Guignol of ’em all, ‘Bride of Frankenstein’—who has not wept at that ultimate sacrifice? And, of course, the master of horror and beauty, Jacques Tourneau and ‘I Walked with a Zombie’—think ‘Jane Eyre’ with Zombies. You can’t beat Cocteau’s surrealistic macabre telling of ‘Beauty and the Beast’. But for me the most terrifying movie of them all is ‘The Haunting of Hill House’–based on a novella by Shirley Jackson–see a pattern here, readers? Why aren’t our literary authors writing screenplays!!! Wait—I take it back–I did see ‘The Blair Witch Project’–that pretty much put the nail in the coffin of me seeing later day horror movies–too scary and morbid for this girl.
This post is as good as friday favourites!! I’ve got my list and am getting ready to scare myself “oldstyle”.
Thanks Slim!
BTW I’m burning a Hemlock Candle by D. L. & Co. for personal atmosphere, brouhaha – I’ll let you know if anything strange occurs…
I love your Candle du Jour! D.L. & Co. – fantastic, especially the packaging!
After seeing The Exorcist with Linda Blair I swore I would never watch another horror movie again. And I haven’t. My mom told me I couldn’t go to the movie but I went anyway and then I regretted it. By coincidence my mom had a pot of pea soup brewing on the stove when I got home. I heard voices from the attic for weeks. I should have listened to her.
I’ve been watching reruns of the Munsters today. So funny. Herman Munster is a riot.
great post- again
cracking up
– re: the costume choice
I vote for the upper- the lower is sexier but
the upper is wilder and more absurd
plus the shoes
Love your post….laughed very hard over the bat as it reminded me of a similar situation…..
The little ones are out and doing their thing….. great costumes and I’m always enchanted that they all say “thank you”.
Big draw at my house this year…I have a Dutch Door. Works great, I open the top and yell BOOOOO (lost a few to tears) and then lean over the bottom with the basket. Best part…my dogs can’t get out and I don’t have to wrestle with them. As 2 little boys ran back out to the street….they yelled to all, “hey, that lady has a magic door, it splits in half”….Made my night!
Happy Happy!!!!
P.S. I pick the “higher collar” dress and the shoes you’ll be sporting tomorrow!
Since Rosemary’s Baby came out the year I was born, I’ve often wondered if I’M Rosemary’s Baby. But I look nothing like Mia Farrow. I’m gonna go with The Exorcist as most scary. Funniest costume I’ve seen so far is a dad wearing a cowboy costume meant for a 3-year-old. He has a tiny vest adjusted with string, a tiny cowboy hat and an arrow through his head ala Steve Martin.
The Omen.
The Shining
Carrie
Rosemary’s baby.
Showing our age?
Hey, Slimmy— No picture of your Bat-Mobile?!
What a great post! I love a good scary movie, well love-hate.
I actually just watched Rosemary’s Baby the other night, it wasn’t nearly as scary as I remember it to be (I was such a suck at 13). I haven’t seen some of those oldies that you’ve mentioned, I’m now on a mission to try and find one to watch tonight for Halloween sake….fun!
“Blair Witch”, “Wolf Creek” and the first “Paranormal Activity” are some newer scary movies that I loved (hated)……and can’t forget “The Blob”!
definitely the first outfit, just add that fab belt from Jessica Light Trimmings UK, and borrow your husband’s dual baseball hats……done!
The Exorcist has my vote. And, Paranormal Activity, ( the first one) with that ending!!!
I lived in a house once that had a ghost. It was a lady who had died in the house. The previous owners told us about her AFTER we bought the house…hello??? Nevertheless, she made a LOT of noise, turned on TV’s in the middle of the night, “dropped” books from the landing, made herself felt by ice cold air breezing thru like Disney’s Haunted Mansion where you look down the hallway and the dim lights are flickering on and off. Only once did I wake up with that feeling someone was standing over me. Thinking it was one of my kids, I woke up to no one there, but definitely a presence. She did one thing that we could count on like clockwork. She didn’t like it whenever we went out of town. She would set off the alarm. When the alarm company would call they said that Zone 45 went off. But….THERE WAS NO ZONE 45…..ooooooooohhhhhh. Happy Halloween….I’m scared now.
Slimmy—The Lady Eve is scaring me
Girls- don’t make me come down there!
One plus of living in a one bedroom apartment is it’s not NEARLY as scary as a big house, I’ve never even heard the term “haunted apartment”
True that Canuck, although I’ve heard the term “Creepy Condo” plenty!
nice try Slim..
After seeing the Excorcist with my boyfriend and his parents in 1973 the only Halloween movie I will ever watch is “Ghostbusters”.
Another wonderful Slim Paley blog. Possibly “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane” could make your list of scare movies?
Halloween has never been my favorite ritual, though I do love orange. But you take the theme to new (Laboutin) heights, as always!
Hi SP!
How was your Halloween? I hope you ate lots of candy! 🙂
To be really honest I think I saw way too much stuff this halloween. Every single site and blog talked about it. Maybe I should spend less time online! LOL But then, I came here and saw yet another post about halloween… but this one is totally different! What I love the most is your sense of humor. You definitely have a very unique way to make a blog and I admire you for that.
PS: I like your ideas for a costume… the sexy nurse got too old, huh? Or I did, anyways…lol
Luciane
Top dress for neck protection, great bag ; the gloves… oh THE GLOVES !
OMG! Black Christmas is STILL my favorite all time scary movie! Not many people have heard of it. The Bad Seed….super creepy. Once in awhile, I’ll pull my car off the dark country road,
turn to my sons, and say “want to see something REALLY scary??”….Remember the Twilight Zone movie opening? I know….naughty mommy. I think the Exorcist and Omen movies, The Shining, and The Strangers scare me the most. If I’m doing night check in the barn alone, I just know that guy in the suit with the hood over his face is going to be waiting outside in the distance with his head cocked to one side just staring at me…..AHHHHH! Fabulous fashion for your date with TDP! Super fun post as usual! xoxo!
@ The Lady Eve- I had a ghost too….it’s weird to talk about because nobody believes you – only those that have experienced it understand it. We must talk sometime!
Since Halloween is my birthday I’ve obviously always been partial to it, although as a child I could never understand why everyone (the 2 square blocks I knew) dressed up just for my b’day and I always had to have a costume party!
Husband took me to MAREA last night because you suggested it!……..I wore a costume…….no one blinked except 4 ladies from Seattle who loved it, and everything, including the lobster ravioli with roe was superb……….thanks!
You know what???? You left out the scariest movie EVA…..”The Birds”. OMG a babysitter made me watch that with her when I was 6. Hello? Seriously 6? I guess she thought I could fight them off better than her if we got swarmed. hummmm…….weenie
You know what’s truly scary??? I saw Christmas ads and decorations BEFORE Halloween…..What up wit dat?
I’m with you Slim….the oldies are so much better than the slasher flicks of today. But two more recent scary movies I like are”The Sixth Sense” and “The Others”. Both are more thought provoking and play with your head! That sort of stuff scares me way more than the blood and gore!
Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte with Bette Davis; Rear Window with Grace Kelly (and her fabulous costumes) this was my first memory of a really scary film; and someone mentioned Daphne du Maurier … Rebecca.
Someone sent me this site; I am eternally grateful as I so enjoyed it all!
