The New Blue

Royal Blue.  Beautiful at the beach, or on a boat. Great in Greece, regal for Royals and certainly makes for wonderfully mysterious eyes, but the sudden popularity of “The New Blue” in fashion?  Sorry, I’m just not loving it. I remember it coming around once before in the 80’s and I wasn’t buying then either.  It always reminds me of Maggie Thatcher, old stewardess uniforms or dressing for Bridge Club.  Still, one cannot fail to acknowledge it’s omnipresence in the fashion world at the moment, so just to demonstrate what an open-minded, Favoured Nations Fashionista I am,  I’ve compiled a tribute to this hot new cool colour filled with finds no self-respecting politico would be caught dead in;

I know I just said I don’t like this blue, but I’m already sort of loving these Solange Azagury-Partridge earrings…kind of pathetic how quickly I fold isn’t it?!

These Christian Louboutin kicks are terribly Tommy Tune

and these gals are certainly not off to Bridge Club…

Now we’re talking. A beautiful colour for a train I think.  Have you ever been on the O.E.? It’s on my Silver Bucket List 🙂

This Italian line of body lotions, bath oils and candles is really gorgeous! Especially the Sandalwood scent. I discovered them in London but they were too heavy and breakable to bring home- if anyone knows where to purchase them in the U.S. please let me know.

  1. Not at all buying the new blue fashion or accessories, ick.
Blue, “new blue”…………kind of silly, but, blue looks wonderful on SOME things and terrible on others. The best blues? Eyes. The Aegean. The shutters in the Greek Isles. Sapphires. Perfectly cut blazers. On Bentley’s (with white or butterscotch colored interiors. Moroccan tiles. The sky, anytime. Morning glories. Thats it for me! Shall we move on to turquoise?

  2. Hi Slim,

Like you when you first mentioned the “new blue”, I thought, been there done that, and didn’t like it. However, after scrolling thru your blog, some of it is growing on me too! I particularly like the Versace coat and Oh! Those earrings, just love them.

  3. I like it for accessories and when it doesn’t go towards the purple. I like the earrings, the Submariner and the Roger Vivier boots. I certainly couldn’t complain about having a Kelly in this color either.

  4. Another wonderfully colorful blog! You bring so much beauty into our lives Slim. First of all BeautyHabit.com has the complete line of the Ortigia products you covet. And they are on sale! I have to say I quite like the blue fox Versace vest, and Sinatra. Re the Orient Express, I rode it round trip London-Venice when Jim Sherwood first restored all the cars and started running the wonderful vintage train in Europe again after s0 many years. Only problem was the restrooms were at either end of each car and I had to share in our car with Jean Kennedy Smith and her daughter and Pat Kennedy Lawford and her daughter and the Lawford women would get in there doing makeup etc endlessly while Smiths and I stood in the aisle of a fast moving train waiting!! And the cars at that time were green not blue. When it comes to blue, I can’t resist adding I love the color of Cambodian kingfisher birds — heavenly kingfisher blue. I collect the jewelry and household ornaments the Chinese made of these blue feathers for centuries and actually wrote a book “Kingfisher Blue”. I’m not mentioning this for free publicity to sell the book because it is now out of print and a collector’s item — recently Amazon.com had two used copies for sale at $1,250 each. I was in a state of shock for days when told about this! It’s now being offered for a more reasonable price of $399. Of course the reality of it is I made about $5.50 a copy when the book was published for $50.

    • I haven’t seen RL’s beach line yet Janet- but funny you should say that as I was going to say that Ralph does blue so well. Going to check it out now.

  5. I am with you on the blue rolex and you could maybe talk me into the Judith Leiber clutch if I had the million dollars. I will ignore this colour completely, did it once (one outfit) in the Dynasty and Crystal Carrington days and once was enough for me……….I ended up looking like a younger version of the Queeen Mother. Not so good as we know, bless her heart. Fun post.

  6. Blue is not my fav color but when I wear it people really look me in the eye so I try to wear the new blue (which is always out there)

  7. I too, am a red-head… when I was in middle school, there was only one other girl with red hair and hers was the Ronald McDonald shade. She showed up for school one day in that shade of blue and looked like a neon sign….I forever have stayed away from it for fear I would look like that, even though I’m more strawberry blonde…funny the feelings a color can evoke!

  8. That looks like the blue that workers wear in France. But I had a pair of cowboy boots that color back in the 80’s and they made my legs look extra long!

  9. You are SO right, never have owned anything in Royal Blue, makes me cringe actually! My least favorite color on the entire spectrum, and nothing you showed me changed my mind!

  10. I’m not much of a blue person either, but some of these items could grow on me!
Love the watch, with white jeans and tee. Travelling on the O.E. is on my bucket list
too! So is Morocco. Ahhh, someday. Great post as usual!

  11. I agree with almost all of the blues in your post Slim. The earrings for sure, Hogan trainers, and the Net a Porter dress. I hope nobody lets me out wearing all three at the same time !! (it could happen! )
I actually always thought I wore blue well. God knows it’s not like my family not to give me their opinion.
Love your post as usual, Thanks for sharing xo

    • Trust me Mary Beth- You would not want the Mt. Vesuvius of what I call my “desk” on your bucket list right now 🙂

  12. What a fun post!

Happy to see this blue surfacing in advertising and on the fashion front again. My bridesmaid dresses, circa 1983 were the same blue. Loved the color then, love it now. Really, I love every hue of blue on the planet. It makes me feel wonderful. 🙂 Navy, periwinkle, sapphire and wedgwood blue are my favorites. Turquoise would never be allowed in this club. I always feel fantastic when I throw on a navy suit and stiff white shirt in the morning. (It’s usually a toss-up between pearls or an orange, navy & white Fendi scarf. The pearls tend to win.)

Blue and white together is magic . . . EG blue & white Shelley china, blue & white toile, blue & white flowers and a blue sky full of fluffy white clouds. Is there anything sweeter than a tiny, new baby snuggled in blue and white?

As partial as I am to this blue, it is not the answer to everything. There are times when a little hit of it is quite ample. EG: the Versace coat in blue and black is perfection. And then there are those times when it’s too much EG: in the 80’s Volvo AB produced cars in this blue. The executives responsible for moving the product in North America cursed the color and referred to it as Smirf blue.

Gotta go look at the twilight shot of Shaghai again. Is it not dream-like with the twinkling lights and winding river?

    • Navy blue suit, crisp white shirt and pearls…in the morning yet. Linny- Dude- you are one grown up sexy woman!! Bloody hell- I hope my husband isn’t reading this

Honey- I’m throwing out my Uggs in the morning. I mean it this time. (except for the lilac pair.
      and orange ones)

PS. I LOVE turquoise! Post coming soon!

  13. I love the nightfall on Shanghai, magic. Thank you as always for your take. PS just bought a new great new Pucci cocktail dress to wear in Miami in these colors, which is magic as well. I feel it is a blossoming color scheme that is in tune with the post you did on all of that Proenza Schouler/peacock for fall, one of my favorite blog postings. Have a great weekend.

  14. With all due modesty, the “new blue” is one of my very best colors. It is best in small doses, however.

  15. of course i adore this post! it’s my favorite color! I spotted that adorable blue robin judith leiber back and the blue louboutin flats on Net-a-Porter the other day too and swoooneddddd!

    xoxo Bardot in Blue

Would love to hear from you!
