Meet “Shaq”, another of NYC’s finest contestants in my continuing “Barktorialist Series” :)

.

.

We’ve been having a super fun time in NY

.

But let me tell you; I was worried when we arrived the night JFK airport broke it’s all time record for rainfall…

.

Slim Paley photo

Would you want to go out in this??

.

Slim Paley does Bladerunner

Of course one does have to strike out eventually to forage for sustenance

I also went to see a couple of movies with my sons-nothing that could vaguely be considered  a “Slim Paley” recommendation I’m afraid (still haunted by one choice) but I wasn’t getting a big show of hands on my “Sarah’s Key” suggestion.  Anyway, we had one of those moments where you just have to say “Only in NY”.  In a theatre about 1/3 full (a matinee) a gentleman behind us began to snore.  Really loudly.  After about 10 minutes of raucous nasal orchestration,  an extremely tall, completely bald and physically intimidating man rose up from the second row- walked up the aisle, stopped directly in front of the snoring culprit and smacked him right across the face!  Needless to say, Mr. Snorer woke up with a start and Mr. Smacker told him in no uncertain terms “Do not make me have to come back  here again”  (I’ve phrased that slightly more politely than Lurch did)  Can you believe that??!  I had to tie my younger son’s jaw shut.

Eventually the sun did come out, and we were able to enjoy our favourite NY pastime which is walking, walking, and more walking…

So glad I brought my trusty pedometer, so that when found ourselves at;

Dishes for the realtor in your life

Meanwhile, at the other end of the New York Stories spectrum, my husband got on a subway car almost entirely filled with pre-teen summer campers, in matching yellow t-shirts, having a rather riotous grand time on their day out.  At the next stop a Rastafarian busker got on the train car, pulled out his guitar and invited the kids to join in on a Bob Marley song. In moments, the whole car was filled with the beautiful voices of the children all singing “One Love”  Isn’t that great?! I really wished I’d been there.

Except for the subway part.

Just kidding! :)

Central Park in late afternoon

.

So all in all, another grand adventure, as is usually the case in New York.  A couple of restaurant disappointments which we won’t speak of as I’m not a food critic and everyone is entitled to an “off” night I suppose.

Just glad to be here where it all seems relatively sane in comparison to my hometown of Montecito right now, where the “Kardashian Royal Wedding” festivities are just getting underway. Seriously?? WTF?!  I’m proud to say I’ve never watched the show and have no idea why in the world the world is enthrall of all this/them/whatever it is.  What say you?!

Wishing a Happy Weekend to All,

xx

.

So we can all pretend we were there;

  1. Looks like you are having a great trip Slim (how do you stay Slim for heavens sake?) Would say the same on KK, just not getting the whole thing but what do I know, I am from canada for heavens sake. Much love XO

  2. Your subway story reminds me of being stuck on an airplane coming from Hawaii to a blizzard in Seattle, we were stuck at the Portland airport and someone starting playing the guitar and the plane sang along, still remember that moment…agree with KK..the whole thing is just sad that the kids these days idolize this family…and while we’re on the subject …Jersey Shore…my heart sinks.
Lucky you to be in NYC !!

  3. ahhh…I really got so hungry for Katz deli ..damn maybe santa monica has something..?.and no to the Khardasions? and welcome back and Im off to the beach…maybe a margerita!

  4. Great post! Love the pictures and thought of the movie Ghostbusters when I saw that first photo of NYC. Funny story about the guy at the movies and the story on the subway is very touching. Wish I was there, too.

  5. Love the photos, so wish I could be there too. Soon, and I must visit Fishes Eddy, looks like a fun place to bring home NYC souvi’s.
Kardashian Royal Wedding; really? WTF! is correct. Sad state of American’s now days…..

  6. Barkatorialist . . . ha ha ha.

Anyways, SP where have you been? Seven days is just too long to go without a post. :)

Just fell in love with that NY pup. So sweet!!!
And the deli sandwhich, I almost fell in love with that too.

  7. When you return to Santa Barbara, if you fly into SB Airport and deplane into the new terminal, you’ll notice the glass walkway that welcomes the arriver to Santa Barbara giving you a view of the ocean (sometimes) and mountains…a friend of mine works there and when they were plotting the terminal he, inspired by his trip to an airport in Nice, France, suggested that if the beautiful glass walkways are good enough for Nice they’re good enough for Santa Barbara! They took his suggestion and voila! :)

  8. What a fun experience…to be on a subway when song and merriment brake out…sort of like the flash dance they threw for Meridith Viera’s retirement from the Today show, LOL!
The picture of Central Park is really great.
    Karen

  9. So happy to report I know (almost) nothing of the Kardashians…
Cannot imagine why anyone would find them fascinating or worthy of a tv show.
But then again, I don’t watch that one about the storage lockers either…

    Love the photos…

  10. Oh Yes, the pup is Fabulous! And loved the “Snoring man” story…
as you said, only in New York…

  11. OMG, am sitting overlooking NH lake (where the sounds carries…..) preparing for reentry into NYC in 3 weeks, and I am hysterical/crying at the Snorer/Slapper story……..soooooo New York, sooooo possible! Thanks for a dose of reality after a summer of bliss.
Did you manage to get out for Tea? Do tell.

  12. Ah! The craziness of New York! Brings back great memories. Thank you for the post and especially the guys in the movie theatre! That is hilarious and shocking! Loved the photo of the dog as well!

  13. Thanks for the trip to NYC.

Re: Kardashians. I think it’s sad that America’s female role models used to be women like Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Slim Keith & Babe Paley. Grace personified.

Now it’s a rush to the bottom…& in KK’s case that’s literal as well as figurative.

    Love the doggie photo!!

  14. An incredible post again! Having never been to NYC (not that I wouldn’t love to) it is fun to get to see the NY from a tourist point of view instead of the commercialized one we normally see. Love the dog!!
What is a Kardashian? What royalty would that be? Stuff and nonsense I say!!!
Great stories especially the movie one–ha ha!!!

  15. Thanks for the great stories and pix. I don’t really know who the K’s are and from what I hear, haven’t missed anything that I would be interested in. I love the Central Park pic.

  16. Still drooling from the pic of the reuben and the pickles. Great shot at Central Park. Love the story in the movie. Great post – THANKS!

  17. Always love your NYC posts! It’s one of my favorite places in the world, and I go every chance I get—which hasn’t been often enough lately. :-(
Love the story of the snorer—only in New York!

  18. We have never been to NY but am very excited to finally be making a trip there for a month at Christmas & New Year so am scribbling down practically everything you write about in my little book. We will definitely remember not to omit any sound in said theatres!!

  19. Dog is adorable. Pastrami sandwich has me drooling. Love the park photo through the trees to the Beresford? And think the subway story is enchanting. Re the trashy Kardashians it can’t all go away fast enough for me. Had lunch at San Ysidro Pharmacy yesterday and helicopters flying continually, mainly around Oprah’s house. If it’s really being held in the old Daniel Donahue home, later owned by Andy Granatelli, that house is not inducive to large crowd unless the party is in the building Andy built for his automobile collection. Not exactly high glamour! The gardens when I knew the house were broken into low boxwood hedges creating geometric design areas which cuts down heavily on a garden wedding space. And about that $10,000,000 price tag being quoted???? Supposedly People Magazine is paying $1,000,000 dollars for photo rights and ET TV paying the rest. I don’t think they’d pay $9,000,000 to film a wedding of Brad Pitts to Queen Elizabeth! For me the real tip-off is fact that the three wedding gowns Vera Wang is holding for her to chose one are only $25,000 each. A gown befitting a $10,000,000 wedding would have to be at least $100,000 to quarter of a million. I’ve never forgiven Pat and Bill Loud for starting the whole disgusting reality show business with their long ago Loud Family show. The first and I only wish it had been the last.

  20. The Barktorialist is so appealing. Please show others you come across. I think dogs are so wonderful!
I find the story about the snore slapper to be disturbing. I hope it’s an “only in NY” occurrence, but it seems like people have increasingly less impulse control every where.
All the food you had looks SO fabulous.
And that photograph of Central Park is frame worthy.
Thank you for sharing. Please continue having fun and sharing the photos with us.
    Best regards, Ruth

  21. OMG! He SLAPPED him??? I hope it is a NY thing too! I would have joined you to see Sarah’s Key in a heartbeat!!!! The food looks yummy and the dog, adorable! XO, Pinky

  22. Fab photos!
Those scallops and sandwich look so amazing.
I wish I’d been in that theatre with you and on the subway with your hubby….love those stories!
Finally having some nice weather in Vancouver…..phew! it’s been the worst year “weather wise” in my entire life living in this city!

  23. Always love your travel tales…and tails! Shall we take bets on the duration of the KK marriage? Oh, please….
hmmm…maybe the $ 9,000,000. is going to the groom for his…services!

  24. WTF the Kardashians???? OMG you must be kidding. The most compelling television going. Come on! You must not have seen the episode where the mother went to her gynecologist because she is now becoming incontinent and learns that she needs to do kagels to tighten things up. Yep, what an unselfish mother of 6 sharing such concerns on national television. Or how about the episode where Kloe and her sister’s are waxing each other. Now there is a story!! Substance, heart, inspirational, and truly humanitarian. Next they will be receiving the Nobel Peace Prize…. for empty, shallow, and disgusting.

  25. All my favorites…David Burkes is great…Katz OTT good … makes me want to be in the City instead of France…Well maybe!

  26. oh that 2nd picture is so gorgeous. i want to know what movies you saw. were they teenage boy type. those are my favorite. omg, i love that the guy just hauled off and slugged the snorer. so funny.

    xo
    janet

ps – i preferred him married b/c then at least i knew who he was with (although apparently, maybe not.)

  27. What a fantastic NY adventure! I was hanging on your every word! You are a great story teller Slim! And I also wonder how you stay slim! I think I need to go back to NY soon!

    ~Delores

  28. Kardashians…yuck! If nothing else I cannot stand those voices and they way they talk to their mama? Whew!! The media is crazy for focusing on crap like this but someone must be watching because Ryan Seacrest is getting awfully wich! Oh well..welcome back home.

  29. So, about the Kardashians – my 19 year old daughter seems to be addicted and I cannot for the life of me figure out the appeal – I think it has something to do with having grown up in a time of excess where designer bags and Tiffany jewelry seem to be accessible to anyone over the age of 12. At times I despaired that my daughter would forever remain about 1- 1/2 inches deep (she once complained that she didn’t like homeless people – couldn’t they go somewhere where she didn’t have to look at them – and my all-time fave: I came upon her at the suggestions box at the Art Gallery of Ontario just as she was about to insert the following note: “Here’s a suggestion – turn this place into a shopping mall”). I am pleased and relieved to report that (Kardashian addiction notwithstanding) my daughter has grown into a woman whose heart and soul are front and centre. But I wonder and worry about just how lightweight and shallow this popular culture will become. Are we into some sort of evolutionary regression? I blame Paris Hilton.

  30. I love getting your newsletter, but today was special. I haven’t been to NYC for a long time, but it looks as beautiful as ever.

  31. I’m seriously going to consider starting a new blog…anyone across the globe could post a sweet photo of a pooch at random!
Let’s honor the real-life celebrities of our lives…dogs!

    thebarktorialist.com

    Your brilliant Slim!
    xxoo

  32. I love the dog’s shoes! What a riot. I just finished reading Rules of Civility this morning (which takes place in 1938 Manhattan), so it was perfectly apropos to see your New York pictures. If you haven’t already, it is a great read… far and away from all that KK nonsense. ugh!!

  33. Can I be the first to applaud your honesty! I have followed you for since the beginning and that is my favorite thing about your blog. You do not sugar coat the truth.

WTF, made me burst a gut about the Kardashians. I cannot believe that the wedding is being touted as Americas Royal wedding! Are you kidding me? It makes me sick when I hear people say that. I have nothing against them, more power to someone who takes a sex tape and turns herself and family into a business worth 65 million dollars. But to act like these people who are only out for self promotion and seizing their 15 minutes and beyond, are Americas royalty…there are not words.

I have to stop otherwise I could write for hours. I love the photos from NY there is always something to do or see. I would be a little afraid to see a movie though after your description of the people there. Lol.

    Have a great week.

  34. You always take such great photos, regardless of available light. Would you please let us know what kind of camera you have?

  35. “Kar…ians”. I can’t bear to say the name! I just don’t get it! WTF is their claim to fame? and why are people so infatuated? I’ve also never seen the show nor do I ever plan to! Thanks for the trip to N.Y. Slim!

  36. Wish I could say I had missed the Kardashian madness, I had to take a detour TWICE, imagine that! Love this post on NY. If you are still there, and since you seem to love beautiful things, check out this new store in Brooklyn: http://1thirty9.com/

  37. Let me guess were you at the Theatres across from Lincoln Center? I have those NY moments every time I’m there. I always arrive see a looney person and it never fails they end up in my theatre and have to sit right next to me. Last time I met some friends and we see this older gentleman who looked like he had taken a fall and had blood all over his shirt….I said oh Mary Ellen this poor guy looks lost he’s not going to the movies is he? Sure enough not only does he buy a ticket he sees the same film we do and picks the seat right next to me. WTF!!!! The good news was the bloody side of his face was on the other side next to another poor woman. Only in NY! Looks like you had a marvelous trip.

  38. I was at the New York Gift Show and was also part of that weather system. NYC is no fun in the rain! Loved the dog and all your beautiful pictures of the city. I have never watched the Kardashian’s reality show either. Did not know about Fishes Eddy ?? Will check it out.

  39. What a fun tour of NYC!;) Agree with the Kim who? Where DID all the great women role models go for this generation??? Oh to bring back some of the really fine women we learned to love and admire!

Thanks again for another wonderful romp…Slim style!

  40. WTF is right about the Kardashions. I mean what IS the draw there???? I haven’t been here for a while and it refreshed my love of Slim Paley’s blog. I’m in Italy right now, heading to Florence for a little “retail therapy”, yes, a new Chanel handbag is on my list. Or maybe a Louie. can’t decide. Or Hermes? What treat would you get? Need some SP advice and I want it in grey.

  41. SP,

I like you even more now! I don’t get why people go nuts over the Kardashians. I mean, why people will watch untalented people and make them so famous? Are we this bored? Can we find something more productive to do?

    I wonder….

One more thing, I can’t believe the snoring man getting slapped! Can’t we take a little nap anymore! HA! ;-)

Have a great day, pretty lady!

    xo

  42. Love it! We share some favorites ~ David Burke is one of America’s best chefs…(let’s keep this just between ourselves!) Katz’s~ foget about it.. the closest us Californian’s will ever get to the real deal. Fishes Eddy? Oh YES please!.. we still have purchases made 25+ years ago ..just add a plank table and boom- it’s like a country explosion all over your urban kitchen. Beautiful account here, cheers!

  43. Never been to New York, and after seeing all your (fantastic!) pictures I’m putting it even higher on my “places I have to visit soon” list. Would it be reasonable in December, or too cold?

  44. Fabulous in December! Snow (maybe), but lots of holiday shows, ice skating in the parks and Rockerfeller Center, the Giant Xmas tree up from early Dec on, bustling happy time. Go!

  45. Favorite place for dinner in NY? We have so many options and only there 2 nights this trip. Doing laconda verde for lunch bc we can’t squeeze it in for dinner. Open to any new options, but right now deciding between: Craft, Minetta Tavern, Babbo and L’Artusi. Help!! :). Love Love Love your blog!!!
