Have you noticed the plethora of pajamas worn as day and evening wear the past couple of seasons?
I know for some, it will never be acceptable-
a slippery slope as it were, to slovenly slothtitude (it’s in the Slim Paley dictionary :))
Personally,
I couldn’t be happier
(save receiving an invitation to a formal affair stating “Uggs mandatory”)
I’ve always adored the pajama look

I’ve pulled out some of my old (and new) faves, including a vintage Jean Paul Gaultier silk kimono (to wear with my “vintage” Tom Ford crushed velvet trousers I rediscovered awhile back-I told you I was cleaning my closets!)

I bought this Tommy Hilfiger number (Fall 2011) and have worn it everywhere but bed.

Happy Weekend to All.
Relax, unwind, remember to review your resolutions and
raid your jammie drawer!

I am loving the slouchy chic look, Slim! I arrived home late today from a long day of running everywhere, and only discovered I was totally out of red wine after I had slipped into slouch. I threatened everyone that I was running to the liquor store in my jammies. I MUST order myself a matching helmet!
I adore the sexy navy Ferragamo pants from the Resort 2012 collection, but would perhaps swap the PJ top for a navy slip and navy tuxedo jacket – or a long navy lace top. Very Cocktail-Hour-in-Capri…
As cute as this look is, I think you’d need something to distinguish these PJs from “nightwear” such as a pair of killer heels, a long strand of pearls or a great big sapphire rock on one finger!
I think Chanel used to wear her PJs to the office? May be wrong. In any case, it would certainly be comfortable!
Janelle McCulloch | Library of Design
Yes, I agree Janelle, I definitely wouldn’t wear Pajama top AND bottom- that would be too much. Well, let me clarify that; too much unless the pajamas were very beautiful silk, worn with heels and some jewelry/accessories to give them a twist.
I just love “Very Cocktail-Hour-In-Capri…” talk about just taking an instant visual holiday!
Hi Slim
When I was a kid in the 70s, my parents used to take us out socially at night in our pjs! I always think of this when I see a kid out with their parents at night in their pjs!! The Baby attends all sorts of functions in his pjs.
Meanwhile I love the idea of wearing pjs out, but frankly, at my age, I just don’t know if I could pull it off.
I have only (crosses self) 2 more weeks of maternity leave before I haul self onto the 375 bus and trundle back into the Coalface. We are well and truly going to be Through The Looking Glass.
Your closets hold the most remarkable pieces, jammies or otherwise. Mine on the otherhand…not-so-much! Flannel & sweats with the occasional silk long johns… Can anyone identify?
What’s a pajama story without …..Hefner. smile
Diane, so funny. Made me smile.
Ruth
So right Diane- WHAT was I thinking?!
Slim, Maybe your mind subconsciously blocked putting Hef on your lovely blog because Julian is ironic but Hugh is a little creepy.
R.
Your blog is a hoot to wake up to in the a.m. But now I dont want to get out of the pjs! Imagine having Julian Schnabel living in your home – all that paint on the furniture is what I am thinking! Mrs. Schnabel must have a good dry cleaner.
One of my favorite party outfits is a pair of pajamas I bought years ago at Takashimaya on Fifth Ave (I miss that store). They are cream silk with honey-colored bone buttons carved in the shape of medallions often featured on the front of a Chinese wedding chest. I love them because they are both chic and comfy. I once owned a grey cotton knit jump by Norma Kamali. That was comfy too. On reflection, I fear people thought I was wearing a union suit…but I was young and you can get away with a great deal in youth. Now I think the only way I could get away with wearing jammies out is by using a top with conventional bottoms or vice versa. The examples you have shown are lovely.
All the best…Victoria
Hi Slim,
I love the whole sleepwear look – kimonos, PJ’s and slippers for out of bed wearing – it’s relaxed & hip. I also like luxurious silk or velvet bed jackets with jeans ( NOT pink chenille with one’s initial embroidered on the front ala Laverne). Thanks for another great post!
Ruth
I have a small collection of bed jackets Ruth!
I’ve found it interesting that designers are making them anew. I still love the vintage ones though. I’d love to see yours sometime. I’m hoping that all your talk of closet cleaning is leading up to a Slim Paley dressing room reveal!
R.
Slim I have never seen so many darling and elegant pajamas in one place!! Adore your Tom Ford Crushed Velvet Trousers and the Hilfiger. Ferretti has some wonderful ensembles as well!
Great post!

I have ivory silk pajamas from the 1940s that are embroidered with polychrome dragons. Last year, I wore them to a cocktail party and got a million compliments. The beauty of pajamas is that they conceal all–no Spanx needed!
Exactly
The Ferragamo silks and the Afghan for Jones–I think they would make great friends. Thanks. Mary
I have several pairs of vintage pajamas that my father-in-law had made in Asia. The fabric is wonderful but the elastic is shot. I’m thinking of having them retrofitted for my girlfriends and I. But I hadn’t thought of wearing them to dinner!
I’m in with this look……….actually I already am! I could live in jammies (sad to say). Happy weekend Slim. XO
COOL pajama post, Slim!! Love all your photos and the song is a perfect way to slide into the weekend. Have a wonderful one!
We actually have Jammie Day in our house .. how about you??
Wow what a fun post! I had no idea how many chic ways to wear pajamas existed! Kudos on finding all those amazing pictures.
Too close to a warm up suit on the street…can’t do it. But I admire the images of the incredible pj’s and models who could wear a burlap sack and be impressive.
Karen
Long live Lucy & Ricky (reruns!) This just makes me want to “lounge!” LUV’d it! franki
Only you, dear Slim, could pull this off! I especially love your vintage top.
Loved everything, so comfy…I am sure “Canuck” will have something to say about ALBERTA FERRETTI USING OUR VAN CANUCK’S COLOUR COMBO. Slim, I admire your way of putting all of these posts together. You always have such a great eye for colour and detail.
B J
I want to try out for the Canucks just so I could wear those pajama pants!
In honor of this post I’m going to laze around in my PJ’s all day and wait for our supposed snow to fall.
Hello Slim…. Where is the original PJ man….. Hugh Hefner,
always looking good in his black silk……..
Now you are talking. . Love . love my jammies.
Cute post.
Happy wekend xo
What a fun post! I love PJ’s and my favorites here are the Hilfiger ones. The colors are fab. How many PJ’s should a girl own? I love a long man shirt with nothing else to sleep in. But for lounging on the couch can’t beat flannel. Your pic’s are so sophisticated, I’m afraid if I went out in my PJ’s people would think I was a bag lady. Time to go shopping!
I don’t know about wearing my jammies out of the house, but I am still doing the Stubbs….are they really 80’s? I have zillions of pairs and I wear them constantly!! I am getting old here!
Thanks for the update and the idea. I might feel a bit naked even in my French heavy linen jammies that were probably worn by nuns somewhere near St. Tropez. Cowardly me!
marcy
The ones you show are very sophisticated and pretty. If you were to walk into the local supermarket in central Texas and see the version of this trend of wearing pajamas you would change your mind. Girls and some women are wearing the walmart flannel drawstring pants with tshirts. Believe me, you would not want to see it again. I am wondering if they are delusional and think they look like some of the pictures you presented above. Yikes. I am waiting for the trend of wearing undies in public. I can only imagine the stretched out granny panties now.
Too funny and oh so true. Thanks Wal-Mart?
One of my all time fave of your posts. After casual Friday, it was the logical next leap in fashion.
Love this post, and Slim I usually totally dig your musical selections, but my GOD I’ve always hated this song! And to think I’d almost forgotten of its existence! 😉
ha ha! Sorry Kelly
Hope it’s not stuck in your head for days….
Dreamer….Silly little Dreamer….
Now you’ve got your head in the clouds, oh no….
🙂
I have always said the world would be a kinder place if we all just wore pajamas!! Sigh…..I LOVED this post. Thank you! I want every.single.pair (especially the Tom Ford pants). My best girlfriends and I have “pajama parties”. We wear our prettiest pj’s, with pearls of course, and bring only comfort food (one year I brought a bowl of cookie dough with 10 spoons!) It’s my favorite party of the year!
i love this look…esp you vintage pj top, but i could never ever pull this off. i’d just look like i left the house and forgot to get dressed. esp in this small town, someone would prob call the cops and have me arrested for indecent exposure. i do have a few pair of v old rl pj’s that i adore but just can’t imagine them outside my yard. you though could so pull this off.
FUN! my brother in law had Dior pajama’s on yesterday!!!
I just noticed the model with the afghan doggie is Karlie Kloss. The only reason I know this is because I used to work with her father, an ER physician. Karlie seems to be a very “chill”, down-to-earth person who is exceptionally smart very much like our own Slim. It is fun to watch the careers of both beautiful ladies.
I have only gone out in pajamas twice and never again – once with our good friend Linny to “Marysville Pie” in the west end after a night out and once to pick up my daughter from a party in the middle of the night.
You first, I wish my jammies looked more than frumpy…??? does that mean… shopping???
Shhmansy…..I do this look every single morning….however, I never get out of the car for anyone to see my silkies 🙂
This site is fun. I enjoyed visiting your blog. This is the kind of blog I want to visit to start my day. I also admire your selection of pajamas.
If my pjs looked as scrumptious as your designer ones I might consider wearing them around the house—but out in public–nevah!!!!!! I just wouldn’t feel dressed!!!
Um – I think it’s slothitude! At least that’s how my lexicon spells it. And couldn’t live without my pj’s!
Just had an evening with people from Chicago…….can you imagine their reaction to this conversation?! Love the Midwesterners ! They are so strong and stick together. Sometimes it seems like weather is such a huge bond for people….good weather and bad. lucky us to have you Mrs. Paley to keep us aware of the good fortunes we all share, warm weather or not! Please do not stop!
Marcy
If ONLY everyone looked so chic in loose fitting attire. As it is…I am an alumni of Heff’s “PJ” soirees and let me say… when I was seventeen it was sexier than hell. Other than that… not so much. Sorry Slim. BUT I’d like to add that Asta looks GREAT!
OR, I could say…
“…dramas and crime aren’t as sublime as pajamas by dinnertime…” Thank you Jessica Molaskey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSe41_VwQMg
I used to wear actual sleeping pi’s (under a coat) when walking one of my dogs in the early morning hours until I ran into a neighbor who called me on it. Maybe I can start again, but with these super-chic ones. Thanks for the inspiration!!
Slim, I have to give you extra kudos when you go multi media and add just the right song to orchestrate your visual feast. You really have the gift for putting it all together into a delightful experience!
Keep having fun!
Ruth
Oh dahhling I nehhhva! I could not imagine it outside the confines of my boudoir!
Save for the impossibly chic “ferragamo” photo & of course the ever so cute Stubbs & Wootons…just no.
How about nighties, Slim?
This post speaks well to someone. To quote her:
“I hate crap. I like craftsmanship. But you must also have a little bit of fantasy…”
Isabella Blow
Oh, No! Say it ain’t so! In yesterday’s USA Today: “LA (Louisiana) lawmaker seeks pajamas-in-public ban!”
Timely??
Was that you pajama-partying in the Big Easy?
This post reminds me of a pair of gorgeous Christian Dior pajamas I used to have YEARS ago. They were a beautiful shade of light blue with a white, very thin pin stripe. The fabric was out of this world. The knees and elbows eventually gave way; I simply wore them out.
(but not in public – couldn’t pull that off!)
That first picture is hilarious!!! Love it…love pajamas but can’t see wearing them beyond the front door. Happy weekend.
back when you were just a glint in your daddy’s eye… i’d say about 1972…
i went to a dance at the club in carol lombard style satin pajamas. they were not see through and they had a wonderful hand. i was a hit with both ladies and the gentlemen. my husband loved it! but those were different, daring days when i was petite and ever so brazen… a new england girl born and bred and yet what fun to let down the old hairs on ones head! i say… you’d be perfect in a pair slim!
the color of the pjs i wore? i had two pair… one in white champagne (lombard) the other in the icy pink very similar to the cushion on the small ottoman in your lovely boudoir.
yay free spirits!!!
oh, my favorite get-up by far, aka my freelance pants!! Happy New Year!
Love the Isabel Marant pj’s! I once wore my pj’s, robe and fluffy slippers on a flight fom SF to LA – it was a dare! It was alot of fun, comfy and I got a lot of smiles too! xxoo
Just a quick mention: I saw on slate.com today an article about a Louisiana politician demanding a ban on pajama wearing in public!
