Romance & Roses

Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but looking outward together in the same direction” Antoine De Saint-Expery

It’s Smoochie Smoochie Time again…no, Silly, not The Grammys-I’m talking about kissing on the LIPS!

Valentine’s Day Tomorrow!!

What Lips My Lips Have Kissed

by Edna St. Vincent Millay

What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why,
I have forgotten, and what arms have lain
Under my head till morning; but the rain
Is full of ghosts tonight, that tap and sigh
Upon the glass and listen for reply;
And in my heart there stirs a quiet pain
For unremembered lads that not again
Will turn to me at midnight with a cry.
Thus in the winter stands a lonely tree,
Nor knows what birds have vanished one by one,
Yet know its boughs more silent than before:
I cannot say what loves have come and gone;
I only know that summer sang in me
A little while, that in me sings no more.

Sigh.

Let’s stroll down a romantic path together, shall we?

What’s your favourite romantic restaurant ? What foods spell ‘Sensuous’ to you?

Your most treasured romantic novel?

Mine is;

“To him she seemed so beautiful, so seductive, so different from ordinary people, that he could not understand why no one was as disturbed as he by the clicking of her heels on the paving stones, why no one else’s heart was wild with the breeze stirred by the sighs of her veils, why everyone did not go mad with the movements of her braid, the flight of her hands, the gold of her laughter. He had not missed a single one of her gestures, not one of the indications of her character, but he did not dare approach her for fear of destroying the spell.”  Gabriel Garcia Marquez

And for sensuous food…pretty much anything that involves white truffles gets a big pungent thumbs up from moi.  Quite honestly- just bury me with a good bottle of fresh white truffle salt (but make sure it’s pure, no “Essence of” stuff- Could there be anything worse than heading off into The Afterlife with an aftertaste? You have to think of these things…)

‘Le Sirop Monin’ mixed with champagne, yesterday afternoon…  For the sake of THE BLOG, People

PS. So I cheated and used a camellia petal because I didn’t have pear juice or roses in bloom right now-  not poisonous, right?

It’s been almost 24 hours now…

So far, I’m feeling OK.

  1. incredibly gorgeous images…I think one of the main reasons I studied horticulture was I fell in love with the rose at such an early age…and still love it..now, of course, I can actually grow them in our arctic region of northern lower Michigan….
    maureen

  2. Great picks! You have the most exquisite roses! I am of the brown thumb variety so can’t even imagine. However, I do pour champagne very well! For the sake of the blog of course.

  3. “Reader, I married him!”—–Bronte’s ‘Jane Eyre’ is, to me, the most romantic novel.
‘Daydreaming’ (“Hey Baby, let’s get away, let’s go somewhere, I don’t care”) as recorded by Aretha Franklin is THE sexiest song ever written. Go now and listen to it.
Movies? Toss up between ‘Casablanca’ and Disney’s ‘Lady and the Tramp’.

    Sonnet 116—Shakespeare
Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixéd mark
    That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose Worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.
Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
    Within his bending sickle’s compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom:
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

    Another great post, Slimmy

  4. Oh my, the lovely scenes and flowers just keep coming, so many exquisite sites. I think the oak lined driveway and that gorgeous ruin in Greece were my favorites! Happy Valentine’s Day!

  5. How beautiful. I loved the poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay. My favorite romantic song is: ” The Way to Look Tonight”–I heard Fred Astaire sing it yesterday on the radio. I just melted. My favorite Romantic movie is That Awful Truth with Cary Grant and Irene Dunne–90 minutes of foreplay–divine!!, and of course, Breakfast at Tiffany’s for all of the obvious reasons. My favorite poem is “For Two Friends Fallen in Love” by Wendell Berry and 100 Love Sonnets by Pablo Neruda.

    • I am looking everywhere for that Wendell Berry poem: “For Two Friends Fallen in Love” and cannot find it! Do you have a copy? Thank you.

  6. Oh Slim,
I just had to comment on Dabbsie’s post—“Lady and the Tramp”—most romantic evah! I spent many early mornings nursing my baby (now 23) weeping over that classic. But I’d have to say that my young yearning self was formed while reading “Gone With the Wind” and dreaming of young Southern gentlemen defending the lives of their mamas, wives, girlfriends and babies. (Oooops, terribly not PC, but hey, I was reading the paperback at summer camp when I was 12)

  7. Once again SP- you’ve done it right-
you have managed to not let the mind over ride the heart-
but rather to order it about-
I want to live in the garden outside of Rome
    never leave
    – sneak out when picnic lovers aren’t looking
    in my naked mossiness
    to steal their pretty bottle
    of cheap Rose
    with my teeth
    BRAVO

  8. “Let’s Stay Together” is one of my ALL time favorite songs EVER. Love, R&B, you name it! How cool that it was played at your wedding!!!! Your picks are lovely and (as usual) expanded my beany-brain. A new author–Dianne Ackerman–shall be checked out. Here’s to chocolate kisses and champagne breath!

  9. Sweet Slim!

How beautiful! It’s really, really pretty and the most “touching” post about Valentine’s Day I’ve seen so far.

It made me be “in the mood” for some REAL romance! 🙂

Author Erich Maria Remarque’s ‘Arch de Triumph’
E.B.White’s forward to his wife Katharine S.White’s book on gardening, ‘Onward and Upward in the Garden’ , is one of the most loving tributes a husband has ever written to his wife.
I LOVE these posts where you ask us to weigh in. Such fun!

  11. Les Terrasses in Ibiza is so beautiful – I was there with my daughter, and it was heavenly… as are truffles, black and white, mmmm. Thank you for this very special and elegant post and the emotionally soothing mood you’ve created tonight. Happy Valentine’s Day!

  12. wonderful post!

I want to try the champagne and Le Sirop Monin, like tonight, i wish the liquor store was open, sucks being a Canadian sometimes.

  13. “let’s Stay Together” It has a special meaning to me. It was Angela and John’s wedding song.

    As usual a great blog!

  14. Well Slim, I truly think this post is the most beautiful. I know I say that every time.
All the rose photos are totally awesome. I could go on and on. If I had to choose one adorable shot it would be the cottage at Rose Story. I wish every one could visit that amazing property. Imagine I had the pleasure of walking those gardens, followed by a magical evening of
vocal talent. It was an evening I will never forget.
Bravo again Slim, happy Valentines ox

  15. Albert Einstein, one of the sexiest men on earth, had this to say on love:

    1. The laws of gravity cannot be held responsible for people falling in love.

    2. How on earth are you ever going to explain in terms of chemistry and physics so important a biological phenomenon as first love?

    3. When you sit with a nice girl for two hours, you think it’s only a minute. But when you sit on a hot stove for a minute, you think its two hours. That’s relativity.

    4. Love is a better teacher than duty.

    5. Women marry men hoping they will change. Men marry women hoping they will not. So each is inevitably disappointed.

  16. hi slim,

i can’t tell you how long i’ve wanted to go to rose story farm. i have a book, i think it’s called the gardeners life that does a profile of the place and i have always wondered what it must be like to live there. omg.

all these images are too beautiful for words. i’m searching my brain for some of the most romantic things larry has ever done for me…ok, a couple of years ago we had a wonderful dinner with a bottle of ‘j’ champagne and the next day he took the bottle to a glass cutter and had the top cut off so it made a vase and filled it with a bunch of mixed colored roses. that was sweet.

ok, i just thought of another unlikely but killer romantic moment in my life. we had just found out we were going to be grandparents and we were in the ralph lauren store and i came around the corner and larry was holding up a little dress and putting his glasses on to read the label. all of a sudden it just hit me that wow, we’ve been together for so long and have been through so many things together and here we were growing old together. my heart just melted in that moment.

why am i telling you these things in such a public forum? omg, i have no idea.

    xo

  17. Love the film, “The Painted Veil” (even though the critics didn’t) – a story about forgiveness. The score is gorgeous and Lang Lang’s “river waltz” is hauntingly romantic.

  18. Thank you for this beautiful Valentine’s gift! Your magnificent roses, Dani’s fabulous allee, TOAST bouquets. And those gardens of Ninfa I first learned about from you. Galliano’s dress with that amazing top and one glove soft brown and one black patent leather! The words of one of my favorite authors Gabriel Garcia Marquez. If anything could be added to the perfection you have achieved here it would be Wong Kar-Wai’s magnificent film “In The Mood For Love” starring Tony Leung whose face says more than 10 pages of dialogue and beautiful Maggie Chiang. Oh yes, heavenly truffles. I’m actually going on a truffle hunt in Tuscany this autumn, want to come………

    • Yes Beverley- how about those two different gloves! what an amazing eye.
I am a fan of Tony Leung too- he’s kind of dreamy 🙂
      Happy Valentine’s Day!

  19. OMG………I read this 14 times just to hear the song……………fabulous memories. Thank you. Now I can go to bed and reminisce. Happy Valentines Day !!

  20. Thanks for the wonderful heart-filled post. It is really getting me in the spirit. Two of my favorite authors were at the top of your list Edna St. Vincent Millay and Gabriel Garcia Marquez–nothing better or deeper. Happy Valentine’s Day back at you.

  21. Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day.
I’m in hospital with a broken back, Cyclone Yasi, and a roof, and a camera, BUT -it’s wonderful not to be dead. Tee Hee.
Gosh I love all your roses, cheered me up no end.
Slim, you always post the most amazing dresses – have you ever actaully seen one worn in the flesh so to speak?
    Louise

    • Dear Louise- please tell me you are joking about having a broken back, right?
      I certainly hope so…

and in answer to your question re the dresses- many of them are couture dresses that I only dream about wearing or even seeing in “the flesh”

  22. Hi slim, Jumpin Johnny here! B.D just turned me on to this great site! Three cheers! Wishing you and the Pittsburg Elvis a happy valentines day… J.c

  23. I was in Sun Valley watching the ice skaters when I first heard Leonard Cohen’s “I’m your Man” and became a fan . . . years later a very romantic encounter resulted in the song being rewritten just for me (not by LC) Roses, roses, roses . . . I have received my fair share . . . love your post brings back such poignant memories!

  24. Sweet, sweet post! I love the Edna St. Vincent Millay poem. Yes, sigh!
Speaking of the Grammys, I’m delighted that Esperanza Spalding won.
    Happy Valentine’s Day! ; )

  25. Slim, I love your roses! I have a rosebush that came with the house when we moved in, and I have NO idea what to do with it. But you’ve inspired me to find out. 🙂 And speaking of roses, have you read The Black Rose by Thomas Costain? Beautiful romantic novel!

  26. Most romantic movie: Out of Africa.
When Denys Finch Hatton tells Karen he wants his freedom, she tells him:”-I’ve got this little thing that I’ve learned to do lately when it gets so bad..and I think I can’t go on..I try to make it worse. I make myself think about our camp on the river..and the first time you took me flying. How good it all was. And when I’m certain that I can’t stand it..I go ONE moment more and then I know I can bear anything”.

Romantic song: Marvin Gaye, Let’s get it on
    Happy Valentine Slim!

  27. The was the MOST beautiful post ever! What a beautiful way to start my Valentines day. I’ve always loved the Van Morrison song “Have I told you lately that I love you”.

  28. Wow, Slim…. Mmmmm… What a thought-provoking and nostalgia-producing post! Absolutely lovely. I absolutely adore the very first quote by Antoine De Saint-Expery. How true a statement that is! Thanks for reminding me of it! As always, your posts are a delight!

Would love to hear from you!
