ROCK BLOGSTER

Grey, Gray, Gris… whichever way you spell it, we are experiencing IT big time this summer in Santa Barbara.  The sun hasn’t come out  ALL DAY,  yet again.  I’m writing my Congressman person. This is ridicoolus.  In any case, our stony skies have inspired me to share this amazing little Spanish guest house featured in the June 2010 issue of Interior Design Magazine with you.  May all of you in warmer climes feel cooler just looking at it 🙂

House of Rock

This tiny cliff side guesthouse situated on the rocky Costa da Morte, high above the Atlantic Ocean in Northwest Spain was designed by Ensamble Studio principal Anton Garcia-Abril, who describes it as an “unearthed truffle”   The construction consisted of digging a large hole and then compacting excavated soil around the cavity to form a rough retaining wall. Concrete was then poured around stacked hay bales placed within the hole.  Once the concrete was set, the compacted soil was removed to reveal the boulder- like mass in the photo above. How to remove the hay bales still within? A hungry cow named Paulina was employed.  Several months and 600lbs later, Paulina waddled away, and this 270 sq. ft. mass was left to complete.  Much like a well designed boat, most of the interior components are multifunctional.  The headboard is also a cabinet that houses a sink at one end; doors at the other end conceal a toilet. Garcia-Abril even found space to include a fireplace- something any self respecting cave-person couldn’t possibly live without.  I find the juxtaposition of the primordial and modern minimalism to be completely magical, don’t you?  Although truth be told… they had me at  “truffle”.

    old thing before though.

  3. REALLY LOVE THIS!

John’s Villa is a sight to behold……the most wonderful book I have ever read about decorating and restoring a house. (yes, it is a HOUSE! Not a “home”! That “real-estate speak drives me nuts! It is a house! as well as a Villa!)

    Wonderful pics as usual!

Ok; now to the most important thing: where are the white truffles!?! I will pay to find out!!!

    Thanks for another great post!

    • Hi Janet

      Here it is;

      “People say she’s crazy
She got diamonds on the souls of her shoes
Well that’s one way to lose these
      Walking blues
Diamonds on the souls of her shoes”

From the lyrics of “Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes” from Paul Simon’s GRACELAND album

      🙂

      • thank you for the paul simon ref – wondered and attemped to google … GRACELAND …appropriate …. bling is “in” but the trend precedes far beyond our time ….

  7. A wonderful post….glad it is/was grey, gray, gris to inspire you! Now to escape the gloom….come north…. Sun Valley is living up to it’s name! AND the music, as of last night, has begun!
Thanks again, you’ve started the day out right and the “sun” is on it’s rise along the mountain slopes…..

  8. I love all the cool gray. As a fellow Californian (San Diego) I am also tired of the gray skies but we will probably be complaining come Dec that it is too hot! Also as a Californian, that rock house makes me a bit nervous! Fun post.

  9. You never disappoint. The only problem with this post was that there were so many remarkable things featured, that now that I am at a point where I can remark, I don’t remember them all! The cave house is amazing. And I do need that stunning full length backless dress. The beanbag is a delight, and I must look into those whiskey stones.

I know there was so much more. I really do love wearing grey and your fashions today were very inspiring, as always.

Sorry to say this, but it is hot and sunny in Seattle.

  10. LOVE this post, super cool on so many levels!

How much do you want to bet that RH in Vancouver doesn’t carry those fire pits?

House Of Rock is fantastic as are those Whiskey Stones.

That song was so fitting for scrolling through your photos, excellent choice!

Sunny and hot in Vancouver…just saying.

  11. Those RV fringed shoes………….I think we used to call them: “bedroom shoes”………..no need to worry about tripping…………

I’m sitting in the cool, sunny mountain air of NH next to a lake……….not regretting having left sunny SoCal 40 years ago…………come visit!
    Thanks for another inspiring post.

  12. Sorry it is so grey/gray/ gris where you are. The sun in Georgia this summer has been relentless & the heat… But never mind.. THOSE SHOES!!!! SENSATIONAL.
Again, thanks for another great inspiring post.

  13. Are those Whiskey rocks cold? Ice cubes that look like rocks? Interesting. I dont need to tell you that I am loving these grey mornings .. sorry slim. That being said off to sunny Vancouver on Saturday. xoL

    • Hey Lo
You keep the “rocks” in the freezer until you are ready to use them- they keep your whiskey cold without diluting it with melting water.
      Lucky you, off to Vancouver.
      Have fun!!!!
      xx

  14. The unearthed truffle is fascinating. What an unbelievable getaway. Ditto what Lady Eve said.

Every shoe in this post is pure genius. Wow.

The oyster gown by Dennis Basso is gorgeous and I love the classic, timeless look of his models. I think this girl’s name is Emma – perfect hair and make-up for the runway.

    I love love love gray/grey/gris. 🙂

  15. Slim
Love the sight. Sophisticated ,Great Design and sense of humor
    along with music.
    Well Done !

  16. LET ME SPEAK TO THE “ROCK RUG” . HAVE PURCHASED IT AS A FRONT DOOR MATT FOR MY SURFER SON’S APARTMENT IN SAN DIEGO. OF COURSE, I HAVEN’T SHOWN HIM ALONG WITH ALL OTHER DECORATIVE ITEMS.
I FIGURE THIS WILL GIVE HIM THE FIRST PEDICURE OF HIS LIFE. I DON’T SUGGEST IT FOR ANYONE ELSE UNLESS YOU ARE, INDEED, GIDGET. XO
