Red & White Stripes Redux

It’s that time again!

When I go to my “happy place” with the annual red & white stripes post.

And what better day than on the eve of celebrating America’s Independence?

I have so much to be thankful for living here and not, say, in Egypt right now.

Not that I’ve ever even been to Egypt, so it’s not like it was a close call or anything,

but still…

I’d love to go there someday. Prayers for the situation there to settle peacefully and soon.

and now let’s get back on a much lighter note,

Red & White stripes window shopping Marrakech

I’ve always got an eye out for a good red & white stripe when I’m traveling.

I’m delighted by what the smallest dose of it can bring to a room.

On my recent trip to Morocco I spotted this lovely display in a great  shop in Marrakech.

They had wonderful linens, textiles, place mats etc. so I hope someone will leave a comment reminding me of its name.

*LATE ADDITION: The music I forgot to add last night! Great summer song

(must be turned up really loud)

How cheery is this kitchen wall painted like a dish towel?

If you’re in a bad mood in the morning in a room like this there’s pretty much no hope for you.

I spotted these cute “vintage” serving boxes in an antique store in Carpinteria and bought the entire stash of them. Perfect for popcorn or hot dogs and chips by the pool.  I propped them on my cotton throw/tablecloth in the “new” conservatory (which has basically become my new office!) for this photo.

Ask me if I painted the vintage lamp hot pink for the conservatory yet.

le Bristol hôtel, ParisI shot this photo in the courtyard of hotel le Bristol in Paris last summer.

I highly recommend it for the perfect combination of luxury & friendly ambience. Not too stuffy for kids and wonderful restaurant, bar & room service.

It’s amazing how well red & white stripes work in old world interiors as well as new.

They can feel totally Euro or quintessentially American. Take your pic.

They’re the Switzerland of stripes.

OK, so I know this is not red & white exactly but how could I not put these 5 photos together? I wouldn’t have been able to sleep otherwise.

It’s not easy being me.

No stripes at all here in fact, but don’t you think this room was “inspired” by Matisse’s “Checkers”?!

And just in case you missed it the first time; my Red & White Stripes post from last July.

Timeless is timeless after all.

HAPPY 4th of JULY to All You Wonderful Yankees!

Be safe and joy-filled this holiday.

And thanks as always to the troops that afford us this day to celebrate.

More Stripes for the die-hards;

“Red & White Stripes (II)

  1. Striped out!! There isn’t a red stripe left to be had… Love this post and your sense of humour…
from a ‘totally Euro’ / French loving Aussie… 🙂 xv

  2. I snorted out loud when I came upon the photograph of your conservatory, wondered if you had painted the chandelier yet and you asked if we wondered had you done it yet. Funny. As usual, beautiful!

  3. Happy (first?) 4th of July to our newish American citizen!!!! Have a wonderful day ! Love the stripes as always–in fact everytime I see red and white stripes on something I think of you. Has been a hot time here in Idaho with temps this week at 109——–and of course the air conditioner in my car had to go putz and no one to fix it till next week! Ah, well will keep my dogs happy by staying close to them to calm them down in the midst of all the firecracker crazies out there!!!

  4. Woot, woot! Woke up feeling surprisingly a tad homesick as the 4th is usually not my cup o’brew but got all the dose I needed from you, fabulous SP plus some giggles to boot. Merci!!

  5. love red stripes!!!! Have you seen The Louis Vuitton windows? They are a little more “melon” than red but just adorable stripes… I go by there just to look at them. Have a great forth!!!! xoxox

  6. You had me at the first photo (as usual)… So many photos spoke to me! Oh, happy day…I am a convert…gonna go get SOMETHING red/white striped. More importantly, Happy 4th of July! So thankful.

  7. Slim,
Happy 4th of July! I always look forward to your red and white stripes issue. There is something so fresh and summer breeze like about red and white stripes. What a great way to start my day, thanks!

  8. Slim an elegant assortment of 4th of July images ans some are just comfortably relaxing rooms!!
    Enjoy the Holiday Weekend!

  9. I didn’t know I liked red and white stripes so much!! As always, your collections are inspiring. Great vintage boxes!! Maybe the chandelier should be red? I’m just sayin…
And yes, a big thank you to our troops! HAPPY 4th of JULY to you and your family as well.

  10. Love the red and white. Happy 4th to you and yours; to our neighbours below the 49th and especially to all our special friends. Thanks also to all the troops for protecting us as well.

  11. I am just nuts for stripes. This was beautiful and charming as usual. Thank you and happy 4th!

  12. Like exploding peppermint candy for the eye! Refreshing! So summer-ish and fun!!
Happy 4th to you too, you new Yankee, you!

  13. You are making me feel like red stripes can be appreciated more than the old Candy Striper’s uniforms or Peppermint swirl candies that I associate them with. I especially love Jean Shrimpton’s and kate Moss’ striped looks and those chairs in the store in Morocco. Happy Fourth! Or from where I live at the beach, and a fogged in friend said, through the gray and gloom, “Crappy Fourth of July!” lol

  14. Hi Slim,
I tried to locate the red striped glasses at Taigan but need more info. They are great! I want to track them down!
    Thanks, as always, you inspire,

  16. Cool song! I believe I once read that the brilliant record producer Giorgio Moroder felt that Donna Summer was the greatest of all singers.

  17. SO chic, especially when it is kind of “snuck” in. And can Jean Shrimpton be any cooler in that photo? And how does she look so cool in those comfy shoes??? Hope you had a great 4th, Slim! xx

  18. Freedom to wear red and white stripes even if they make my arse look like a double wide, thank you America!…..on another sobering note, my daughter’s friend who lives in Cairo, said our CNN is making it look like the military has taken over, when in fact, it is the people of Egypt, and the people of Egypt are extremely happy to what has taken place and would appreciate all of our prayers for their rights and freedom.

  19. Happy 4th from a long time lurker-first time poster (sounds slightly naughty!). Would you mind sharing where you purchase your fab fedora’s or their maker? I’m afraid the few I’ve tried on lately make me look like I should be leading a troop of Boy Scouts -not exactly the look I was going for…

    • The last fedora I bought was in The Maldives. I guess you HAVE to go there now!! I no longer buy expensive hats after leaving a particular favourite in the overhead luggage bin. 🙁

  20. S.P. – O happy day it’s The Red Stripe review time!!!

And a Summer Song. yea! So I was following your directions to really turn it UP! when Daughter (17+) walks by and complains that THIS is going to interfere with her enjoyment of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” playing in the next room.

I remind her that you introduced me to “Dog Days Are Over” and I liked it immediately (took her and #1Son months to catch-up). We are now having a volume war, that will end when this song ends. And NOT before, cause I’m chair dancing! (I look forward to blasting it again when least expected.) I’m off to watch the movie playing in the next room….blogging will have to wait.

If you have a second, you may be entertained by my post celebrating Independence Day (posted June 27).

Would love to hear from you!
