It was my birthday

white roses, Slim Paley

I tip-toed away and had a quiet little birthday this week.

Not a momentous one, nothing ending in a “0” or marking another decade.

Just one of those that glide by with the swiftness of a bird’s wing, a gentle whoosh, silent and steady.

I celebrated with old friends & my sweet husband.  I’m not one to make a big deal of birthdays anyway, though I do find joy in sharing mine with many lovely, creative Virgo friends born so close together-an added blessing to be sure.

Of course birthdays are a good time to reflect, access,

consider what the past year has gifted us and what the future holds.

So there was some of that.

I also realised that it’s been 4 years since I began penning this blog.

Dude.

I might be old, but I can’t give up my “Dude”

I still haven’t written a book, or accomplished a thousand other things on “The LIST”

But that’s OK. There’s still time.

and I kept up the blog! :-)

I was also lucky enough to travel to some wonderful destinations this year, many of which I shared with you here.

Blogging has turned out to be, amongst other things, the most wonderful form of memory bank.

And remember my promise of a “Talitha Getty” pose when I finally reached Marrakech?

Down.

In retrospect, I think we should have started that last night ‘shoot’ a little earlier in the evening.

Say, before the cocktail hour commenced.

Oh well, there’ll be other rooftops and gorgeous sunsets

You know me,

I’m always looking for the beautiful light…

And just in case you missed it last year (after all, not too much has changed!)

10 Things I know on This Birthday

  1. At least age does one positive thing …. makes us grateful to count our gifts on the inside. And that kept you busy indeed, my friend, for they are legion. :-)

  2. Happy Birthday, Slim. I have become terribly fond of you & your wonderful way of looking at things. I’m so glad you have continued on with your blog. I know it must be ALOT of work but it is truly a quality item & greatly appreciated by so many.
    all the best,
    Ruth

  3. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SLIM!!!! When I saw the picture of Talitha Getty I couldn’t believe her amazing hair(yeah, yeah the rest of her too),….then scrolled to the following picture, YOUR hair,… to die for, actually the whole package, hair, face clothes!! I don’t want to hear any more about “bad hair day” from you! :-) (or is it that Marrakesh has hair wizards??).
P.S WHO is the designer for your outfit??

    • Thanks K.R.! No hair wizards in Marrakech but it wasn’t humid there at all-it was actually quite cool.
My silk pajama trousers are ETRO with just a purple cotton sweater and a lovely old burgundy and rose scarf bought in India many years ago.

  4. Happy Birthday! I hope it was a fun day for you.
And If you don’t write a book or stick to any other of your “list” items, PLEASE keep blogging! You inspire, amuse, engage and delight us all.

  5. Happy Birthday and congratulations on four years of blogging! (I totally agree about the memory bank benefits.) Love your Talitha Photos — you look like you are having a blast, which is one of the many reasons I enjoy your posts so very much. xx

  10. Happy belated Birthday! Quiet ones spent with dear friends are my favourite kind. Just love your rooftop poses! You’re wearing a great outfit and it looks like you were having a hilarious time. What more could one want?
I didn’t know I was supposed to have a List…I’ll start working on one right away:-). So glad you’ve kept up your blog…it inspires and makes me laugh. Good stuff.

  11. Hi Slim, I am new to your blog and I just wanted to tell you that I look forward to each new post. It is so well done and interesting. 13. I am a faithful reader here but don’t usually post a reply…but in honor of your birthday let me say, happy belated! Love your sense of humor and love that you share your travels with us. My own blog is not even a year old but I hope to get there, four years down the road, too. Thanks for the beautiful inspiration!

  14. Happy Belated Birthday, Slim! Virgo is a very good sign, indeed. Lookin’ fantastic in your poses. Thanks for sharing now I’lll check out the things you know on your birthday. :)

  16. Do you ever have a bad day? (understand if you don’t wish to post this) Turning 60 soon, and, undergoing a HUGE shift. Libra’s detest imbalance you know…

    • As Johnny Mac would say; “You CANNOT be serious!”
Of course I have bad days-I just don’t blog on them. Somehow I don’t think those posts would be that enjoyable for my readers :-)
Congratulations on turning 60 soon and keep dancing!!

  17. I hope the sun shines on you, the wind is at your back, you always enjoy great food, good friends, and that you always see smiles and hear laughter every day and not just on your birthday.
You made the trip around the sun one more time, Happy Birthday Revolution!!

  18. Happy Birthday, Slim!! Those pictures of you on the rooftop are fantastic. You look more beautiful and way more fun to hang out with than Talitha Getty. At this age, I’d take fun over youth any day! And secondly, you have inspired an outfit to come out of my closet. I have similar pants to your purple ones and I never wore them because….not sure I knew how to rock them. So thanks. The belt is great. I may wear them for my new crazy endeavor-my first night hosting bridge lessons! Now I really am turning into my mother

  19. Your prose is zen and your sense of humor so engaging. May the coming year bring many more adventures, family blessings and your continuing blog bring your world into ours with your incredible visual images and passion.
    Happy, happy birthday, dear SP.

  20. Happy Birthday to one cool bird. Love the self depreciated humour. Lòooooooove your blog!!!!! You have the most wonderful eye for lifes beauty. With all the love in the world, from a follower from “the land of the long white cloud” New Zealand

  21. The happiest of birthdays to one of the loveliest {and funniest} of birthday girls. Funny, it’s your day, but your wit and warmth and willingness to share this “funny old world” are the gift. May your upcoming year be blessed with love, joy, and many more adventures and rooftop poses, Slim! : )

  22. Darling friend,
I always forget your birthday and i feel so ashamed. Perhaps i will be organised enough to write it in next years diary beforehand. you are a true amie with who i share lots of laughter, even when reading your blog without you. the Talitha Getty pose is hysterical, looks like you have broken a leg!! but really we all know you are just as beautiful as TG and could have done that photo if you were in a serious not humorous moment. I love you and wish you a wonderful year. Keep up the blog and do write the book.
    love you, Katy

  23. Slim, Just celebrated mine with fellow Virgos as well. Mine is the 6th. Seems to be an awful lot of blogging Virgos…Anyway, I agree that one of, if not the best part of blogging is the scrapbook being made! That part I never even considered, but is a wonderful byproduct!

Love your blog. Always. The TG photos were the best! I think they are better like they are with you laughing!

Hope your birthday was wonderful like you!!

    xxKim

  24. Hey Slim,
Just for your information….I saw the announcements this morning that Eataly will be opening here in Chicago
late Fall timeframe. This is only the
second location in the States….pretty exclusive…Have you been to the NY store?
I’m very excited about this opening just before the busy Holiday season. Can’t wait to check it out.
    Anyways, have a great day!
