i‘ve been uncharacteristically quiet of late i know.

you might have been worried the black cat got my tongue…

well, nothing quite so macabre, but i did have shoulder surgery for a torn rotator cuff when i returned from ny.

ouch.

i’ve always said i’d like to host a very grown up halloween dinner as i miss our children’s annual haunts at our home so much. i’m thinking plums and greys and pomegranites, but don’t get me started.  this was decidedly not the right year, but remind me, lets say , next august so i can start planning.

  1. I literally feel your pain (and lack of concentration) since I recently had shoulder surgery. Keep doing the physical therapy exercises. Although they’re painful, they will help your shoulder get stronger and back to normal. This is truly a case of no pain, no gain. There are days when I do an hour of PT just for my shoulder!

    Speedy Healing,
    wavedeva.

  2. Sending you wishes for a swift and successful healing, le belle SP. And thank you as always for the inspiration…I gobbled this up quicker than candy corn!

    • i put off finding out what the problem was and having the m.r.i. no doubt longer than i should have. (why do we do that?!) frankly i was shocked when the doctor told me surgery was mandatory. it’s hard to ever really find a ‘good’ time to have surgery (that isn’t emergency of course) but i’m relieved to have the worst behind me now-i guess what i’m saying is… go for it!

  3. Great post! Halloween is usually not my favorite, but your images got me inspired! I am going to have to get out the magnifying mirror to work on that eye shadow design!
I hope your shoulder is healing quickly.

  4. Thank you for all of the great images!! Great way to start my morning- very enjoyable to look at!! Hope your shoulder heals up fast-sounds quite painful!!

  5. Feel better, Slim. Even when you are partially incapacitated, your posts are beautiful, inspirational, and so eagerly awaited!

  6. Oh, Slim! I’ve had a couple of friends that have had to have rotater cuff surgery, not fun. Still, your post is fun, as always. The vibrant orange heels remind me of grown-up jellies…can you tell, I’ve just returned from babysitting our toddler granddaughter! I love some of the “Halloween Dinner for Grown Ups” ideas! Black water…I’d have difficulty with that one. Ha!
    Hope you mend quickly.
    xo,
    Karen

  7. Sorry to hear about your surgery, hope you are feeling much better soon. And thanks for the post, even though you are not feeling the best, you have done some a wonderful job! thanks

  8. Oh, dear, Slim…frightful news about your shoulder…feel your pain as hubby is experiencing same…yet…your post is magical. Take good care! franki

  9. Slim, what a fun, eclectic assortment of Halloween photos! Only you can seamlessly pull together things like this
and present as a wonderfully spun tale of spookiness! My favorite is the anthony vaccarello 2013 shoe photo with
the model’s unshaven leg visible…made me feel so much better about the state of my calves! Thank you for that treat!!

And wishing you a speedy recovery of your shoulder. Soon you will be back to pitching 96 mph fast balls to us in
    no time. Happy Halloween, dearie!

    • i’ve just recently heard about ‘frozen shoulder’ and it sounds painful! i’m not clear on whether it’s a constant pain, whereas, for me, my shoulder felt ok unless i moved it in a certain way. i had pretty much lost any external rotation.

  10. Oh my goodness, Rotator cuff surgery is soooo painful! Keep up the Physical Therapy, it will help get the movement back. I went through this two summers ago…took some time to heal. Hope your recovery goes well & FAST!!!
    xoxo

  11. So sorry to hear about your shoulder. A friend tells me the therapy, though painful, is key to a good recovery. Thanks so much for making the effort to share your photos.
    May you heal quickly,
    Ruth

  12. Sorry about your shoulder but should be better now. Heed the advice about PT, it really works. Had some when I broke my wrist. Great but creepy photos on this post but the scariest was the lady in the black bootie heels–she needs to shave her legs!!!!!!!

  13. I too was thinking of a Halloween party to brighten up our nest that is empty of little goblin feet …With Empty Mansions on my mind, I thought about a tour of the cemetery with cocktails as a spooktacular place to begin the evening….I must get on that next year…So many party ideas, too little time!
    Get well soon! xo

  14. Bless you for what you’re going through {youngest son had that same surgery a couple of years ago after a football injury. I know yours most likely wasn’t from playing football ~ perhaps something glam like skiing black diamonds? : ) But it is NO fun! He was a champ but was miserable. And gosh the things you realize you can’t do ~ like your hair! Sooo hoping you are on the mend and back to your fabulous, two-handed typing self soon!}. And thank you for pushing on and sharing a faBOOlous Halloween post! Take good care!

  15. ouch, so sorry, wishing you a speedy recovery. a gorgeous selection, as always, love grace, audrey, christy. pumpkin wrapped in bacon with those gorgeous skewers? delicious. no cap solidarity.

  16. A Herculean effort with one arm! Good-on-you as they say DownUnder.
On Halloween, my birthday!, I will be on a plane returning to AU from a fabulous textile tour of India, where, to my surprise, they celebrate Halloween…..but it can’t compete with the colors of Diwali, or for any of the colors of India for that matter! Shocking Pink is the Navy blue of India!
Good thoughts for quick healing sent to you.

  17. Oh, what you won’t do for your audience! Spooktacular! Halloween is my favorite and I crave the Halloweens of my childhood so I have an annual Halloween Witchs’ Ball for my grand-girls! They love it and I love it more. A grown-up dinner with all the silliness of cleverly named mutant foods would be perfect!
Healing, Halloween wishes to you and yours.

  18. Fond Halloween memories of spooky parties at your house when your kids were younger!! Your hubby coming up out of that “shallow grave” the back yard … cocktails in beaker tubes – FUN!! Happy Halloween !!

    • ha ha! what we do for our kids!! talk about ‘you’ll have me in an early grave’ i remember our son saying ‘daaad-i knew it was YOU because i recognised your watch’!!

  19. Love this post. Sorry to hear about your injury. I tore my ACL and will undergo knee surgery after Thanksgiving. Please do send your pics for books and flicks. I will be in a desperate, albeit drugged state. Get well soon!

  20. The work! . the work you do for us ..really gorgeous post and one handed, is there no limit to your powers?

Kendra and the Aga Khan sounds interesting .. I remember one used to hear of Aga and Aly Khans ..why no more?

  21. Best wishes for the most thorough, and least painful, recovery possible. I too am having to operate one-handed and fuzzy headed (from pain or painkiller…take your pick), and I can’t imagine accomplishing what you have in this post in that state (or, for that matter, fully healthy). Give yourself time for the best possible results from the surgery…it will be worth it! I’m sorry you are having to go through it at all but have no doubt that your spirited self will prevail!

  22. Happy Halloween! wishing you a speedy recovery:)

I’ve watched a few episodes of “The Returned”, it’s pretty good, definitely creepy!

yowzers I can’t believe how many people have had rotator cuff injuries!

  23. Rotator Cuff surgery!! Me, too! Impending! I’ve been putting it off while trying PT and steroid shots but they aren’t working. So was your shoulder torn? My MRI shows a “slight” tear while my clinical exam indicates a “frozen shoulder,” which I never heard of until recently. Anyway, I’m scared! Not sure how long the real down time will be and how “new” the arm will actually be. And do you know how I got into this mess? Lifting weights for the bat wings, which I rarely do (but was doing after an 8 week hiatus after double carpal tunnel surgery)!!! I knew there was a good reason to NOT lift weights. So let me know how you do, Slim! Wishing you and full and speedy recovery!

    • i had a bone spur that was slowly serrating the tendon. the surgeon removed the spur, smoothed it all down, repaired the tear and then reattached the tendon to the bone. and then i took some pain killers 🙂 my understanding is that 45% of the stitches will remain in there. i’ve also learned the shoulder is a very slow area of the body to recover as it has little blood flow. who knew?
i wish you the best of luck for speedy recovery!

  24. A one armed blogger – sort of like a one armed paper hanger? Poor you! Thank you for rallying to provide a boo-tiful Halloween post. Best wishes for a speedy recovery! Looks like you’ve gotten good advice from all your loyal readers. Take care and happy halloween!

  25. Happy Halloween and wishing you a speedy shoulder recovery! Beautiful one hand post…you really got me with the stack of Hermes boxes too! Oh how I love the color orange….. and the smores sundaes and the great Kate photo!!

  26. That was excellent! Really gets you in the festive mood plus its Halloween here in OZ & we have got the party started.
Sending you strength & mystical healing energy your way.
    xo

  27. Dark nail polish okay…dark lipstick no! Boy am I glad I am over the hill and don’t have to worry so much about fashion these days. I can just see myself walking up Madison Avenue in those toothpick heels. I’d be in crutches next day, just like I was after crossing the street in wedges one day. Not fun, crutches in NYC. Get well soon dear Slim. We enjoy your adventures.

  28. oh crap, i hate surgery, I am so sorry slim, they thought i had a rotator issue too, and my surgery was scheduled, they were going to shave, repair, pins etc., then i went to the neurosurgeon and he said you don’t have a torn rotator, you have cervical spine kyphosis and you are too young for nuts and bolts, so we will do a lamenectomy and foramenectomy (this is after many months of steroids, p.t., drugs of all sorts, and epidurals in my cervical spine and certain movements in my arm that were impossible), mind you i could not grab items from the grocery shelf or grab the vodka, i mean juice out of the frig…..i went with the nueorsurgeon, i am fine now, but who to trust with this bladder now falling out of my…….wait maybe it isn’t my bladder, maybe it’s just a foreign object or space invader…….(p.s. no caps in your honor, heal well babe)

  29. Wow, Slim another legendary post!!! Seriously each image is fabulous. I especially love the trick-or-treating in Bergdorfs, the bike handles and the Charlotte Olympia clutch!

I’m sorry to hear about your surgery. Sounds so painful, I can only imagine. I wish you a speedy recovery and lots of time with your feet up and good shows to watch, and books to read.

Take care, dear Slim. Sending good vibes. xx Kim

  30. Hi Darl, love those orange lamps and Hermes boxes. I made a Halloween cake in orange covered in spiders that is still talked about in what can only be described as Hushed Awe. Boiling hot here xxx
