Happy Labour Day Weekend!

Oh YAY.

The weekend that officially licks the stamp, seals the deal, clicks the “send” button on Summer.

 Super.

And me, with all these lovely, summery images & ideas still left to share…

And possibly one of the greatest summery songs by one of the greatest summery bands;

So you have to promise to listen, nice & loud as always, while you stroll leisurely through this post…

(there’ll be a test to make sure you were listening afterwards!)

(OK,  laying it on a bit thick here-hopefully we still have a couple of months left of roses in Santa Barbara)

I never got to finish the ultra impressive “SUMMER ICE” post I was working on.

(Martha, you can breathe a sigh of relief my friend-the above was my very best effort- they were supposed to be ice balls but the two halves wouldn’t stick together. It looked so easy in the Japanese video)

ice-cube-tray_300

I wanted to say what a nifty idea this was-freezing aloe vera juice into ice cubes to soothe nasty sunburns.

Particularly great for using on your kid’s friends so they go home and say “Timmy’s mom makes aloe ice-cubes for sunburns!! “

and you just sound like the best frickin’ mom ever.

PS. I never made them.

I also never told you about my trip to the city of Orange recently where the temperature reached a 100 degrees and as I stepped out my car I spotted this super cool old fashioned ice-dispensing machine. Instagram American Graffiti moment. IF I were old enough to even remember that movie, which, no way, I’m not. My husband told me about it.

Oh, I had so many summery images collected

Some, like maybe this one of Daria Werbowy, you could have lived without. But if I’m in testy mood, I’m dragging you with me.

We’re a team here-you’re in or you’re out, you know that.

Skinceuticals Sunscreen, Slim Paley photo

I had a whole summer skin products thing I was working on…

but I’ll just say; for me, this was the best face sunscreen I found. Broad spectrum, very lightly tinted, thin consistency (though slightly oily, not a bad thing for me) and a whopping SPF 50 without feeling like you have a mask on. Also comes un-tinted.

Did I get a chance to write my post on “HAMMOCKS”?

NO.

Well, that post is still coming, maybe even tomorrow, so don’t try and stop me.

Bloody Labour Day.

And did you know that this past Friday, the 30th of August, was “National Marshmallow Roasting Day”?

Swear to God.

 I even had a “Roasted Marshmallow Post” so here it is, somewhat condensed;

The antique lantern in my covered porch in Sun Valley always reminds me of a toasted marshmallow.

  1. Your blog is still the best – others seem to go on and on with endless miscellaneous pictures. Love seeing where you are at – and even if I don’t like the summer song choice it is still appreciated!

  2. I am a kindred summer spirit.
So much more summer to savor!
Made a traditional Greek Salad from my garden tonight–along with Dolmathes, good bread, grilled beef. (alas no lamb). Good bread, wine (alas no Retsina), sipping a G&T as I type. I am a new fan, Susan

  3. Well, you certainly packed a ton of summer all in one post! And we should be wearing sunscreen year-round so thanks for that one! And truly, I enjoy roasting marshmallows in the fireplace…is that unsafe? Thanks for a summer filled with funny and inspiring posts and I am very much looking forward to what you have planned for fall. xx

    • Not as unsafe as going without sunscreen -all year round as you said, especially here in California, so thank you for that!

  4. Awwww. Kindred spirits, indeed. Grew up at the beach and will never tire of it. Spend most holidays by the beach, choosing a new destination is so difficult, wanting to revisit all the old favorites. While you were in Orange, I was in SB, loving ‘since-grade-school’ friends, the perfect weather, the long, long beach walks and Margaritas! Never enough fragrance of the sea, sea glass, favorites places, favorite food and beverage stops, sharing the end of the season.
We are so fortunate here in SoCal that we don’t have to pack away our summer whites cause next week…it will still be summer!

  5. When we roast marshmallows, it’s usually at Santa Claus Beach! Summer might be over, but happily I’m heading back to SB next weekend. Speaking of Orange, we just took our daughter to Chapman. Now I’m empty nesting…that requires a sad song!

  6. I don’t even like summer ~ weeks {and weeks} of SMOTHERING 100*+ Texas days will do that for ya. Sorry {not sorry}. BUT that song you played, those pictures you posted, alongside your funny words, and I’m feeling like I might just miss the good ole summertime. Just a little.

  7. Dearest Slim,

I never usually leave a reply but I think it’s high time I did. Love this post! Love the beautiful settings, the array of color and that Kate Moss truly seems timeless no? Such a beauty. I prefer my marshmallows a wee bit burnt and am happy to roast wherever and whenever an opportunity. Last but not least your choice of summer song – one of my all time faves. Thank you for always making me smile Slim and filling me with inspiration. Xo

    Sista Susanne

    • So nice of you to check in Patricia! Yes, Kate Moss…sigh…I wasn’t a fan at first, but wow, did she prove me wrong. I think she is incredible now. Glad you love the song as much as I do! xx

  8. Slim,
Labor Day blues for summer season enthusiasts, Independence Day blues for fall/winter enthusiasts. I do always love your summer posts and am momentarily a fan of the warm months by you inspiring finds.
    xo,
    Karen

  9. Love your choice of music! …. and agree that “wouldn’t it be Nice” would have been another perfect choice!

So sad the summer is ending, although we did have a pretty spectacular one in Vancouver so I shouldn’t really complain.

    Wow that milkshake looks amazing:)

  10. Whenever and whatever you post for us Slim is always greatly enjoyed!
Totally love those pretty dainty cluster of beaded bracelets on the sandy arm…any
    buying info you might have?
And I actually new it was Marshmallow Day cuz Paris Breakfast blog had an adorable post
about real French ones with no gelatin.
As summer fades away……wishing you one last campfire & marshmallow toasting session.

  11. I fell in love with that song (album)
when it came out and I drove to Santa Barbara as a teen. It always reminds me of SB. So appropriate. 🙂

  12. I must admit…….when I saw THE ONLY SUNSCREEN I AM NOT ALLERGIC TO…..AND IT IS A GREAT SUNSCREEN….I SPED THROUGH THIS POST. I WILL COME BACK!
I HAVE NO IDEA WHY I AM ALLERGIC TO 98% OF SUNCREENS……(HORRIFIC RASHES…..YUCK)
I WAS ECSTATIC TO FIND THIS……FROM MY DERMATOLIGIST!

IT WORKS; NO ACNE, NO RASH!

MY HUSBAND HAD A MELANOMA………(IT GETS NO SCARIER….OUR CLOSE, CLOSE FRIEND……50 YEARS) DIED OF IT….STEPHEN CANNELL; TWO WEEKS AFTER I WENT TO HIS “CELEBRATION OF LIFE; MY HUSBAND GOT OFF THE PHONE…….”OH! ONE IS A BASAL, ONE IS A SQUAMOUS, THE ONE ON MY FOREHEAD IS A MELANOMA!” (I ALMOST HAD A HEART ATTACK ON THE SPOT!!)

FORTUNATELY………HE GETS CHECKED EVERY FOUR MONTHS…..AND I TOOK HIM TO MY DERMATOLOGIST….AND IT HAD NOT SPREAD! (HE HAD THE “SENTINEL NODE” TEST AT ST. JOHN’S)

    YOU LOOK “INTO THE VALLEY”!

I LOVE YOUR BLOG! AND YOU SPREAD GREAT INFO FAR AND WIDE!!

    BRAVO!!!

    PENELOPE

  13. fire place I wish ..have been roasting marshmellows over the gas stove ..funny I bought some last week what’s with marshmellows world wide ?

  14. YOU ARE THE BEST AND NAIL IT EVERY TIME! Have that marg, toast that marshmallow and share more of your wit and charm with us, please. We are with you and haven’t had enough either.

  15. I used to live in Orange & recognized that Rod’s sign immediately. We’ve enjoyed a few nights of roasted marshmallows with our firepit — I think it’s a family consensus that a plain roasted ‘mallow beats the overrated s’more anyday!

  16. Please please, Slim, share with us the recipe for the toasted marshmallow milkshake. My husband looked at your photo, and said “where do we get one, how can we make that ?” We live in Palm Beach, and that milkshake could be an all year-round treat ! Come on down !

  17. Thank you to all who sent me the links for the Rome Marshmallow skewers- they are winging their way to me as we speak. I guess Summer is just going to have to last a little bit longer now isn’t it?!

  18. I am assuming by your cabin remarks that your place in Sun Valley escaped the fires……here’s hoping you didn’t get your mallows roasted by the fires……..it has been a horrible summer in Idaho with 100+ temps almost daily for the last 2 months…even 101 Monday when I came out of the grocery store. It has been too hot to do any fun summer stuff. We got some rain this afternoon for a few minutes but so hot still the neighbor kids were out playing in the rain!! Love your post as always and of course your humor. ….maybe when it cools down I will get my sense of humor back. And yes, Kate Moss gets better with age.

  19. Slim, Your almost didn’t get to this posts are the best. I hate to say this ,but we are much alike. I have a ton of beautiful images saved clogging up the computer, but some ideas never happen. Hey better late than never. This was fiun and you rock.

    xKim

Would love to hear from you!
