Happy Friday Everyone!

.

Hope you had a fun week. The “June Gloom” revisited Santa Barbara in full force (Hellooo, 3rd week in July…) so I enjoyed the sun stealing back in the late afternoons to create this beautiful light in my guest room.

I don’t know whether it’s  a good thing or a bad thing (insert quip from husband, here) but I can’t really remember the last time I physically shopped.  So instead, for this week’s Friday Favourites I’m offering up a couple of internet finds, as well as introducing a new weekly feature on Friday Favourites; A Favourite Old Book.

.

I feel compelled to start off with one of my ALL TIME favourites “Love In the Time of Cholera” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I realize that a great many of you have already read this masterpiece, but occasionally  great novels or films can slip through your list cracks. If by any chance you haven’t read it yet, I’m extremely jealous. You have something very special to look forward to.  I can’t imagine  better summer reading than this  incredible love story.

.

(Caveat; If you were one of the few people who actually saw the film- please don’t judge by that because I hear it was not good, and I’m being kind here)

3 Reasons to Invest in This Birkin

– It’s so inexpensive you can own it in multiple colours and say things like ” Ohmigod- now which coloured Birkin did I leave the butter in?”

-If your reusable shopping bag is a Birkin you might not be so inclined to forget to bring it to the grocery store every single time. Or is that just me??

-This Birkin brings home the bacon, instead of spending it all (Ok, sorry, it’s late and I mightn’t be at my most clever 🙂 … I don’t get paid for this you know!)

Anyway,do check out these adorable totes at  Avril Loreti.com

(PS. I hope this isn’t the Avril that I went to school with because she wasn’t very nice to me)

(Not that I hold a grudge)

Favourite “Smokes”

Great Literature “To Take Your Breath Away”

Speaking of old books, I love these little classics cloaked in iconic packaging. Finally, something good for you coming out of a cigarette box.

Favourite new download thingy;

GetInvisibleHand.com

Perhaps I’m late to this, but have you heard of “Invisible Hand” ? It’s kind of genius! Just click on the above link and download it to your computer. I used Firefox and it was super easy and fast.  Then, let your fingers do the shopping. When you look anything up on the internet, if it’s available somewhere else online  for less $$, a thin yellow bar pops up across the top of your window with links to all other less expensive vendors.  What a world. How did we exist shop before computers?!

And lastly, as I drift off into the Internight…

This is such a cool idea!!  Good luck to Kevin McDonald. It can’t be easy to come up with an inventive idea for a film these days.  I hope thousands of people participate.  I know I’ll be watching!

Click here for : KevinMcDonald’s“Life in a Day” concept.

  1. I am loving this weather in SoCal this summer … sorry slim. The sun in the late afternoon is plenty for me! Love the invisible hand idea – I am loading it up as I write. Thanks!

  2. Love in the Time of Cholera – I read half of it several years ago and got sidetracked with something else. You’ve inspired me to pick it up and finish it.

    PS
Avril from highschool remark – funny!!

  3. Slim, your posts are simply incredible. You always make me think, and consider my surroundings in a new way. I am one of those people that has never read Love in the Time of Cholera, but now after your recommendation it is next up on my list! I am very excited. Per your recommendation a few months back, I just received my copy of The Ivington Diaries by Monty Don. It just became available to ship on Amazon.com and I am reading one diary entry each evening before bed. The pictures are so beautiful and calming and the colors on the cover are so vibrant.
Thanks for being you, Slim Paley!

  4. I love Love in the Time of Cholera as well…but it’s superficial Friday for me and I ordered the last two of those tote bags the site had for sale!

  5. The totes will make me want to trash ( i mean recycle) all my other totes. I like the image of my husband leaving the house carrying what he thought was a Gelson’s tote. Surprise! I have read LITTOC and was transported. I am going to attempt Life in a Day. Maybe your tote will be in it! They do ask to show them what is in your pockets. I hope he knows we chicks carry “Birkins.”

  6. Love in the time….has been sitting unread, downstairs and lonely for about 3 or 4 years.
I vow I will read it and report back! Your guest room looks so calming and inviting, and
    the photos are lovely. xo

  7. Love in the Time of Cholera is one of the most beautiful books ever written. If you can possibly imagine, it is even more beautiful in its original version in Spanish (El Amor En Los Tiempos de Colera) His most famous book is of course One Hundred Years of Solitude, but I did not enjoy that as much.

If you enjoy it, go on to read The House of the Spirits another beautifully written book by the author Isabel Allende. Don’t go by the film version, they were both horrible compared to the book, it is the prose that makes both these books fascinating.

    • Thank you for reminding me about The House of Spirits. I have never read it, but have heard many times that it is really good.
Sadly, I do not speak a word of Spanish, so the originals are not going to be an option for me. 🙁

  8. I am such a virtual shopper — I almost get dizzy when I visit a bricks and mortar operation. My fed ex driver brings biscuits for my dog; and I keep my ups driver going with starbucks gift cards!!

Amazon is usually my first stop — I am downloading the invisible hand PRONTO!

  9. This post brought a restful feeling to me. Your guest room looks so inviting and calm.
I have read, reread, and adored ‘Love in the Time of Cholera ”
Must agree Slim- getting a little tired of these gloomy days, here’s wishing for a sunny, happy weekend. ox

  10. Love in the Time of Cholera is the very first book I teach to my juniors. I love it so much; his voice is perfect, especially when he’s being subtly sarcastic . . .

  11. One of your readers just emailed me and let me know that you posted my I Heart Birkin Totes on your blog! I love every one of your reasons to invest in one. In fact, I’m off to go pick up some groceries with a few Birkins right now. I think i’ll bring the red, orange, and teal ones today 🙂

ps. I’m pretty sure we never met unless you grew up near Toronto, Canada. Besides, I’m usually super nice, and you seem pretty cool! I’m sure we would have been BFFs!

  12. I Love, Love, Love “Love in the Time of Cholera” and Slim count your blessing with the gloomy summer Santa Barbara weather. You could be in New York where it is 100 degrees and 100 percent humidity!

  13. hi slim,

beautiful shot of your guest room. you can just feel the sun. you inspire me to be a better photographer. i’m always in a rush and i need to channel you when taking pictures.
i want to be your bff too!

  14. I Love this week’s Friday Favourites (L).
Is it me or this week’s is somehow shorter… very welcome when we’re facing temperatures of 104 :~. Just by looking to that room’s picture I feel a little lighter and fresher ahahahaha
    Romantic, Fun, Soothing… so you…
Wishing you a nice weekend and a wonderful week ahead.
    Thanks,
    Teresa

  15. I would like to curl up in your lovely guest room and start reading! I’ve had guests for a MONTH and I am sooooo ready to start a good book and relax. It’s been hard to find time to even read your blog! I enjoy reading the comments from others and it would be wonderful to know them all. How about a Slim Reader Meetup in the Chicago area? I think I would make some new friends…I thought of you yesterday as I chased a giant yellow butterfly around my garden with my camera.

    • That would be fun Marcia!
It’s so funny that you would say that about the butterfly- I was doing EXACTLY the same thing this weekend, only it was a Zebra printed butterfly playing in yellow flowers. I did get the photo eventually and will be sharing for sure.

Happy luxurious reading time to you!
      xx

Would love to hear from you!
