Perigee Moon over the Almudena, Madrid last night

Tonight we are going to experience  The Super Moon

It’s the closest the moon has been to the earth in 18 years!

I asked a very “Astronomically Inclined” friend of mine about this event and this is what he had to say;

Most people think the Moon is closest during a “full moon”…but even though it may appear larger…this is an amazing optical illusion.   (On the next full moon rise….look at it upside down or between your legs …this sounds crazy..but  the moon will actually appear to return to it’s normal size…  The scientific explanation and details of this “illusion” can be found at ….

Unfortunately, here in Santa Barbara, we are under grey & rainy skies so I suspect our chances of actually glimpsing the man in the moon this evening are dim.

I do hope you’ll get to enjoy it from where ever you may be.

A little appropriate music to accompany you;

The Famous  Nebra Sky Disk is one of the oldest known depictions of the ‘Heavenly Canopy’, dating back to 1600 BC.

Originally suspected of being a forgery, it is now widely accepted as being authentic to the Bronze Age.

Pretty cool “Tchotchke”!

  1. Slim – wonderful but that ‘Moon Over Montecito’ photo is a fine art painting- just great-
and of course, the more than extra terrestrial Ms Hedy Lamar
    thanks

  2. Slim, Out of all the images that were so beautiful the one I found most shocking was the CUTE ARMANI JACKET!!! I havent bought Armani since the 90’s it seems and that jacket might get me back into a store.

  3. Magnificent!

The moon from your porch is breathtaking.

Here in Florida it is extremely bright, but doesn’t look especially large, at least not now at 11:50 am. It may have been more spectacular earlier in the evening, but I was working on my financial accounting homework.

    Thank you

  4. I am so into this! The moon has just come up here in Seattle, the reflection on Lake Washington is beautiful. I am going to post a few photos tonight. Unfortunately, when I wore my Lumix out, my Mister SM bought me a new camera which is most difficult to operate — so I am not that happy with the photos. I came over to review which camera you use (I think it is the same as my poor old Lumix — someone dropped it in a snow bank after too much brandy, I think).

LOVE the Bergdorf window – their windows last Christmas were extraordinary!!

  5. Next full moon on April 17, just past 7:30 pm will be bigger than tonight’s moon which is hiding behind the clouds–so we get a second chance. This month’s moon was actually closet to the earth today, late morning. If you happen to be in India you saw the moon at the right time unless it is cloudy there too. All this info came to me by way of my kindergarten granddaughter. She attends Earth School in Thousand Oaks and they studied the moon on Friday. I do not recall even having heard the word astronomy when I was 5. My favorite time during full moon is actually early morning while it is still fairly dark and walking on the beach while it sets. If I had that Leica camera I’d try and snap it…
    Yes, that Armani!!!

  6. Wow!!! I am outside photographing the moon with my Lumix (thx S.P.) and I came back in only to see this new posting . . . I am beginning to think we are all of like mind and spirit (with a few technological advances thrown in) I must ask . . . you posted a ring twice was that Freudian on your part???

    • ha ha! thanks for pointing that out Merle- I was in a rush trying to get the post up before the Super Moon was over!

  7. very bright moon over here in Vancouver but it doesn’t look extraordinarily large to me. I guess the optical illusion of the full Moons have spoiled me:)

That photo of the moon in Montecito is CRAZY cool!

  8. It was beautiful here in Memphis, and so was your post. If I had your skillz I would have tried to capture it on film. Big, clear, and golden, like a pearl button. Totally, sigh.

  9. You are our unique STAR!!!!!!!!!……..Bravo for your really creative blog…Keep it on!!!!….Encore,encore….Bises de Paris

  10. lovely post…….I am especially fond of that “Out of Africa” shot depicting the moon over the Montecito mountains.

  11. hi slim,

we were out last night with the neighbors looking at the moon. it was spectacular. we are supposed to get some rain this afternoon so we were lucky last night that it was still clear.

another contest? you are #1 in my eyes, does that count?

  12. Woke up with a start at 3 a.m…………..ran around opening curtains to find which window the moon might be visible in……..found it right in the bedroom!………….sign………..wanted to be able to say I saw it………even woke up long suffering DH…………went back to sleep under it’s glow with the curtains open, Verazzano Bridge in the background……heavenly………

  13. Yesterday was my birthday so as I clicked to vote for you today I asked everyone who wished me a happy birthday on Facebook to click for you. Hopefully that will get you a few more clicks.

And what a bummer to have a big thing like a supermoon on your birthday and you can’t see it through the clouds. Oh well – at least I got a chocolate mousse cake and that’s all that matters. 🙂

  14. From that great shot from The Leopard to your beautiful moonlight in Sun Valley, the divine Victoire de Castellane ring to beauty Hedy Lamar encased in stars — it’s all perfectly HEAVENLY!

  15. A truly “celestial” Saturday – saw the Van Cleef show @ the Cooper Hewitt and then watched the “supermoon” from a Sutton Place promonade. Ah…..if all my days could be so filled with fireworks. LOVE the Hedy Lamar headband, and I still believe that both the tiara and parasols are due for a rebound accessory wise.

  16. We watched the moon come up over the mountains in Sun Valley last night while eating at the Sun Valley Club which was open for “moonlight snowshoeing and nordic skiing”. It was beautiful…

  17. I live in Tokyo and have been a great fan of your beautiful blog for a while. Just wanted to let you know how touched I was to read that you send your good wishes and prayers to those of us living in Japan.

    Thank you.

    • Dear Pink
I have spent some time in Tokyo over the years. I love your city – some of my fondest memories are from my time spent there. I am continuing to keep you and Japan in my thoughts and prayers. Your country’s grace and dignity through such an devastating event is indescribably humbling but not surprising.
I hope that you and your friends & family are all staying safe- Please keep in touch and let us know how you are doing.

      Sending love from Santa Barbara
      xx

Would love to hear from you!
