CELEBRATE: Going For Gold

I hope everyone has been enjoying a happy holiday season.

Finding some quiet time to tuck in with a good book and a mug of hot chocolate, or perhaps catching up on the latest movies? There are so many good ones this year.

As you can see I am back in Sun Valley where the evening landscape is very Seuss-ian. Whoville indeed!

 As we’re just one day away from saying au revoir to 2012, and ringing in a brand New Year I’m wondering;

Where are you and how will you celebrate?!

I send you off on this post with one of my all time favorite songs ; Strange Magic by ELO

Did 2012 zip past like a blur of light for you as it did for me?

Wishing each and every one of you, my wonderful & faithful readers, a safe & joyful New Year’s Eve and may your 2013 be chocked full of good health, happiness & humour.

Thanks so much for all your great comments and support over the years (!!)

Now, let’s get this party started!!

  1. Thank you Slim. You really have added to the joy of 2012. All the every best of health and happiness to you and your family for 2013……..B:) x

  2. Best wishes to you for 2013. The first Klimt painting is one of my most favorite of all paintings–in person it is spectacular.
    Thanks. Mary

  3. I got to see my very best friend after a number of years – a great start to my new year! Hoping to reconnect with friends as often as possible in the next few years as our youngest of 4 leaves for college in the fall.
I love this quote now, “Youth is when you’re allowed to stay up late on New Year’s Eve. Middle age is when you’re forced to.”

  4. Somehow the snow in Sun Valley—especially the view from your front porch—seems much more elegant than the snow here in Erie, PA. Thank you for the many moments of good cheer your blog has brought during the past year. And, very best wishes for peace, joy, and happiness to you and your family throughout 2013.

  5. Fabulous post, as always. Loving all the gold…now how to incorporate when I live a life less glam than, say, Ms Moss. 😉 Maybe the cuff…

Mr. H and I are spending NYE as we always do, since we are a little boring: at the beach with the dogs, a fire and our standard meal of caviar & blini, followed by homemade pasta tosses with lemon, arugula and crème fraîche…and lots of champagne. Still trying to decide on New Year’s Day breakfast, but hopefully we will be able to take our annual beach walk in spite of the cold and snow.

Enjoy the rest of your time in Sun Valley and thank you for another year of inspiration and fun. Have a wonderful New Year!!

  6. Bringing in the New Year in Vancouver, probably laying low with a few friends, maybe order in some thai or sushi and play charades.

I watched these movies over the holidays:
“Flight” – good, but not if you’re about to fly.
“Safety Not Guaranteed” – liked it! stars that funny girl from Parks and Rec (Aubrey Plaza)
“This is 40” – pretty cute for sure, but kinda DVD material, Paul Rudd is still super adorable though.

Happy New Year Slim, have fun in Sun Valley…no doubt some scrabble will be played!

    • I saw “This is 40” and liked it also. I love Paul Rudd. We watched “Zero Dark 30” & “Silver Linings Playbook” too. Too afraid to watch “Flight” and never hear of “Safety Not Guaranteed”
Some Scrabble has indeed already been played!

  7. Happy New Year, Slim! I’m certainly looking forward to lucky (20)13….Wishing you and your family a wonderful year full of robust health and happiness. Sun Valley looks magical, indeed! Cheers! xx

  8. Happy New Year Slim. . . may 2013 be a year to be lived loved and in good health then remembered with great joy!

  9. Oh Slim, what a magical post! Gustav Klimt is a genius..will have to look up the book to enjoy more.
Your friend’s holiday table was most magical..clever how white peonies, branches and snow made
for a forest like setting. Truly inspirational..and a bit zen in it’s understatement and whiteness.

Downtown Chicago for us again this NYE. Stroll through Adler planetarium then dinner at Tesori, Navy
Pier Fireworks at 7pm and midnight with “Hyde Park on the Hudson” movie snuck in between.
Your cozy abode in Sun Valley looks delightful and indeed Seussical.

Happy and Healthy New Year to you and your family.
Thanks as always for sharing your artistic sense on your lovely blog!

  10. All that gold is lovely, warm & uplifting – just like you! Thanks for a fun & entertaining year. Wishing you & yours all the best for a great New Year!

  11. Your salute to gold is wonderful. Love the Tom Ford dress it is very Goldfinger-esque.
Your friend’s table setting looks magical.
We will be sipping cocktails in the Bengal Lounge at The Empress before going out for a seafood dining experience very close to the hotel. Our best friends will be ringing in the new year with us.
Happy New Year in Sun Valley. Slim!

  12. Oh what a beautiful post with great music. Slim, you do have the golden touch! Thank you so much for all the inspiration and beauty you see in life. We are so lucky to have you share your insights with us.

  13. Thank you for bringing us another year of beauty, style and laughter. Looking forward to more of that in 2013!
    GOTT NYTT ÅR!!!!
P.S After this Holiday, I believe I have about the same amount of empty wine bottles as the stunning table setting requires,I’ll be all set for New Year’s eve’s dinner!!

  14. Thank you soooo much for the “Strange Magic!”
Mr. Porter has an adorable smile on his face right now
and is singing along while setting up the coffee maker for the morning.
Thank you for all the gorgeous gold too!
Sending warm wishes to you and your bunch!
    XO Lisa

  15. I’ll be spending New Year’s here in 3 degree (as of tonight) Sun Valley as well. Snowshoeing up at Galena or having a little celebratory fondue and wine at the Roundhouse on New Year’s Eve — SV is a great place to ring in the new year. I hope yours is as golden as your post. Cheers.

    • It IS SO cold, isn’t it?! But very beautiful. Somehow the cold makes the atmosphere feel even more still…

  16. Gagagagagagoldddddd!…brilliant…i recall many painstaking hours of guilding the lily with the lightest of hands and a sable brush while holding my breath as i lay each tender, delicate leaf of gold, it is indeed a labor of love and a lost art, but oh, so beautiful……………..the snow, so pure and silent, unaware of the power it holds on us……remembering new years past, at the ritz in boston, a lovely little gold bottle, filled with gold nectar, a champagne cognac brought in the new year,,,,,,..new year, ……..”tick tock “, said the clock, ….i promise not to jump off the fiscal cliff……….God Bless Everyone…………..Cheers Slim!

  17. This post has that “Midas touch”……..24k as usual. Glad to see that you are ringing in the New Year in beautiful Idaho! Love the little Seussian snow figures…….too funny. Golden wishes for 2013!

  18. that is so pretty! I am going to be in the heat and humidity of the Beach with Old Mr FF the Baby and the step kids. We are going to have a big buffet seafood dinner and I will be tucking in at 9pm!

    Happy New Year Slim.

Loving the gold right now too. Isn’t Klimt perfect for this?

Enjoying the movies right now too. Saw ,”This is 40,” tonight. Funny, but loved it for the house in it. Fabulous. Also great were, “Argo” and,”Skyfall.”

Hoping your New Year’s in Sun Valley is wonderful and wishing you a lovely 2013 too!

  21. Lovely post, yet again! Love the cupcake with pale pink icing and a gilded glittery cherry. Gold, white and pale pink. What a great idea for a 49 th b-day party theme later this month. (Mine)
I was gathering ideas that are “winter”, but not “holiday”. That’s the january birthday dilemma. This is perfect! Thanks for (all) the inspiration! Happy 2013 Slim!

  22. The pictures of Sun Valley are mesmerizingly beautiful! The color of the sky, all that snow..it looks so serene! I have to go back there, was there 10 or 12 years ago for a beautiful wedding, and haven’t been back since. Love gold and what better night to bring out the bling than New Years Eve. Hope you have a wonderful evening whatever you do….and wishing you all great things for 2013, may it be a year filled with much love, happiness and good health. Cheers!

  23. Happy New Year to you! Thank you for a year of visual delight and witty captions. Best education ever of fashion, art, travel and every other subject…I agree with Dean–the snow looks elegant…that view is MAGICAL…i raise a glass of the bubbly to toast to you!

  35. HNY Slim! You are a gift from my neighbor, and you are my first Blog or whatever this is calledl Your pictures of dresses took me back to my own “glory years” of fashion. I do not have to do that now, as I have reched the age of pure comfort in eveythibng I do. Dress up only when I wish to. It is really lovely being older, as it is true that wisdom comes with it.

Thank you for such nice memolries. I wonder if you have people to be with this Hoiiday? If not, you have all of us.

    xo Sugar
