Can’t Quite Let Go of The Stripes…

From My Garden

These candy-cane striped roses are growing like mad in my garden this year.  They don’t have much scent and even though the colours really go with nothing in my home,  I still love them because they make everyone smile!

Which is a good thing right now as we haven’t seen the sun in Santa Barbara since 1982.  OK, I might be channeling my mother and exaggerating just a bit, but seriously- enough with the gloomy skies already.  I don’t know what the temperature’s like in your part of the world  (unless you’re in NY of course. JEALOUS!!) and I know you might be slightly stripe-fatigued, having just finished the July 4th weekend and all,  but it was actually cold and rainy here today (and I got a driving violation) and this Red & White Stripe post made my day just a little bit brighter.  Hope it does the same for you 🙂

Dear Powers That Be;

Do you see these sunglasses??  Did I mention it is July 7th and I am located in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA but today  I had to light the fire, wear a jacket and use my umbrella?!

Are you aware that you might possibly be OVERDOING it just a wee bit in NY and it might possibly be a good idea to spread the Climatic Love around a little?

No pressure…

Love,

Slim

(unless you’re the motorcycle cop who gave me the ticket- Hellloooo, Mr. No Sense of Humour – No love for you :()

Oh, and PS.  My Twitter page has been broken since Friday night- Anybody else having issues??

  1. Welcome back Slim, so sorry it’s still gloomy! Napa is all sun, perhaps too much sun? (don’t hate me). For me, stripes come in only two colors, navy and white. The others make me edgy.

  2. Sorry you are having gloomy weather still. It IS beautiful here in NY, but we only have 3 0r 4 months of sun a year; don’t be too envious. I would still trade so. cal for the weather here in a heartbeat! I love the red and white expose…but even more impressive is the White Stripes music you chose for the post! They are by far one of my favorite bands. 🙂

  3. Love the music, love the stripes, love the flowers, sorry about the ticket. Lots of rain and gloom here, too. Usually, our grass is as brown and dry as excelsior by this time of year. I would be happy to send a large box of humidity to you!

  4. Oh Gaj

    You are edgy! LOL

I love the red and white. Were you both in Hawaii at same time?
Oh slim, the only time I ever got out of a speeding ticket is when I was 18 and in my bathing suit at 11 at night with my girfriend in hers……they have no humor.

  5. Slim,
One of the best posts I have seen on any blog in a long time! Great photo collection! And although I am not a big red and white stripe fan, some of these rooms made me go “Wow!!”–in a good way! It’s gloomy in my area today too! Hope we both get some sunshine soon!

  6. hi slim,

first off, thank you for the white stripes at 5:57 am. LOVE. i know i’m going to have a good day now. it’s that easy.

secondly, thank you for the mention and yes i should embrace the red and not fight it any longer. awnings would be perfect.

sorry that it is raining/dreary in sb but inland (redlands) we are in heaven. 75 degrees in july is amazing.

all the pics are too beautiful.

  7. Cold and rainy – so hard to understand that when it will near 100 today where I am. How cold is cold?
Anyway, sorry Mr. Motorcycle Cop had no sense of humor. He must have been cold.

    Your roses are gorgeous!

  8. Well, I ALWAYS love your photos and your roses, and the stripes are gorgeous. And oh, my, that little man! (My son’s stripes were navy and white, but I can SO relate!) But as for the heat, you are welcome to at LEAST 10 degrees of our NY heat. I’d be thrilled to send it your way!

  9. Welcome back, Slim.
Bet you felt a lot better after so much lively bits of life in the above images…
My heart went pit-pat with you laughing and running around little man:thumbsup:.
I’m with Gaj and navy&white are my stripes but there’s so much fun and life in your post that it’s coming an honorary second.
    Thank you!
    T

  10. I love big, bold stripes, especially black and white. Would love to see a post and the pics you choose for those!! btw…we are also very gloomy in San Diego.

  11. Haven’t been able to get Tweets on my iPhone since Sunday. Twitter doesn’t think you’re around either as I’ve checked the website to see what tweets from you and others that I may have missed. Sigh.

Sorry to hear about mean motorcycle man.

Do like the warmth here on the East Coast, don’t like office a/c that can’t seem to get the space below 80…

  12. sunny in sonoma ! just wishing i had some of your circus-happy roses here ….must try to find – thank you for the cheerful morning inspiration !

  13. FINALLY sunny and warm here in Vancouver!
I’m sorry but I find it a bit hard to feel sorry for you and your Santa Barbara weather.
Thanks for the post, all great photos….cute varsity sweater!

Fab song, you’re so hip! 🙂

  14. What a refreshing post. I love your rose. It’s cooling off to 98 in Dallas today! Sorry about your gloom. And the motorcycle cop!! Boo!!

  15. What a great post. I prefer navy and white stripes too, as stated above – but love the red for a change.
What I’d give for some rain and cloudy weather here in Virginia! It is dreadfully HOT and DRY.

  16. Fabulous as always. Someday I’d love to know about your process. Are you Yahoo-Searching “Red & White Stripes?” I think not.

I imagine you having huge collage boards with an homage to every theme you’ve blessed us with over the past year. Or possibly mentally collecting all the images and then flipping through books and magazines saying, “where is that amazing picture of the red striped headboards?” – I’m having a virtual vacation in that room right now.

Thanks for the respite from my homemaking. I need to get after the red and white of the ricotta ravioli and marinara the kids had for lunch.

    • “I imagine you having huge collage boards with an homage to every theme you’ve blessed us with over the past year. Or possibly mentally collecting all the images and then flipping through books and magazines”

      Dear Kris
You don’t realize how right you are! :
      http://slimpaley.com/2009/11/21/memories-menus-and-inspiration/

I’m obsessed with design, so whether I’m working on a project or my blog, I’m holding so many ideas and pictures in my head- not always by choice! (how DOES one close those mental filing cabinets at will?!) I probably have 20 or so themes for future posts going at any one time- I find inspiration everywhere- books, magazines, my own library, TV, travel, gardens..the internet is probably the least of it, although wonderful for sourcing information.

  17. I live outside of Philadelphia and it has been close to 100 for days. I would love to share some of the heat with you. I have never seen such interesting roses. I love the coloring.

  18. hi slim,

came back for another visit (now that i’m awake) and was tapping my cursor to megs drum. perfect combo.

is that a. branca’s room? it looks like it could be.

also, i really am loving that gap sweater.

    ~janet

  19. Still sticking with my navy and white stripes!
Babe, I think Slim and I might have just passed over the Pacific if memory serves, we were also on different islands, very different atmospheres. We are now selling off Maui, oh my do I loathe that place! so it was a last look kind of trip for me, good riddance!
Hope everyone is enjoying the summer, I know New York is suffering horribly! Quite hot here also but no humidity, for me, the real killer. I do miss my summers in Mexico, San Miguel has the best summer weather I have ever experienced anywhere but alas will miss most of it this year.
Always look forward to your posts Slim, always ravishing!

  20. Can’t wait to see what you’ll come up with in your promised turquoise post. And could you do a Chartreuse one as well please.

Love the Dior gown and your roses!

My egg oil shampoo finally arrived from Switzerland today and I’m already totally addicted to the egg-noggy smell. Wish they made it into a scented candle.

I hope this makes you feel a bit better: my husband got a $180.00 parking ticket in London via a hidden surveillance camera the other day whilst nipping into a shop for less than five minutes. What did you get yours for??

Hot and sunny in the UK, our first proper summer in three years!

    • Hi Andrea
I did do a Chartreuse post awhile back : http://slimpaley.com/2010/05/04/chartreuse-sunset/

Doesn’t the egg oil shampoo smell divine?!! I forgot to mention that my Thai- connection did come thru, ordering it on the internet. I now have 3 bottles safely under lock and key 🙂

I hate to admit your husband’s ticket does make me feel better about my ticket- Mine was for not wearing a seatbelt on a very quiet residential road just one minute from my own driveway- give me a break! Why was he even parked there??

  21. Really happy post Slim. The rose, I agree, divine. I will try to get Tom’s sneakers. I love their shoes and the cardigan, and would run away with golden boy in the cutest togs ever- A precious photo. Again thanks for sharing. xo

  22. A chilly rain sounds divine! WOULD trade it for the 96 – 102 degree SUNNY days that are scorching us here in Connecticut! My daughter is flying to LA tomorrow – I will tell her to drag a little sunshine and HEAT your way!!

  23. CAN HONESTLY SAY IT IS THE FIRST TIME SINCE I WAS TEN THAT I WOULD CONSIDER A TWIN BED. OUTER BODY. XO

  24. Posts with photos of the boys are my favorite.

Vancouver is at the beginning of a heat wave … the flowers in my home are dead and my pups are half delirious. No thank you. I’ll trade you for some light fog.

Oberto Gili (first time I have heard the name) looks like a genius. I love a room with bold, wide stripes.

  25. Love your lovely stripey pics, the images you put on your blog are so divine, just sumptuous, thank you for delighting and inspiring me B x

Would love to hear from you!
