Burnished Leaves Burning Bright

“I could feel at the time, there was no way of knowing…fallen leaves in the night…who can say where they’re blowing…”

Bryan Ferry/More Than This

One of my all time favourite songs/album

Here are a few other things causing me to swoon at the moment;

Alexander McQueen Spring 2011

With Autumn officially upon us, the leaves might be falling, but in the fashion world a new star is rising; Sarah Burton, Alexander McQueen’s assistant of 14 years presented her first collection for the label since his passing last February.  My knees buckle at the mere thought of how daunting this must have been for her but she rose, indeed soared with a beautiful collection both ethereal and strong. Cheers to her!

John Galliano Spring 2011

Galliano’s Spring collection was FULL of fabulous colour, but this muted olive -yum! (reminds me of martinis 🙂 )Does it look to you like the pants are leather and have a very light layer of sheer black fabric on top?  – so cool.

  1. “More than this” ..and that album in general (Avalon) is one of my absolute favorite too…So funny..i have never heard anyone else say that…beautiful and evocative of a wonderful time…beautiful photo..so happy it is fall!

  2. roxy muxic’s avalon is, was, and always will be, one of my all-time favorite albums. ms. burton’s collection is pretty damn fabulous too- lives up to the mcqueen standard in every way.

  3. OMG! You are my muse………
    1. Greek Mythology Any of the nine daughters of Mnemosyne and Zeus, each of whom presided over a different art or science.
    2. muse
    a. A guiding spirit.
    b. A source of inspiration.
    3. muse A poet.
All of the above. Thank you.

  4. HI THERE! Two amazing things….
    1) I was at the funeral……….(sorry…..) of one of the favorites…..(top 5) of my life. Stephen Cannell.

He and his wife were our really good friends in Pasadena…….(where I grew up).

He stayed there when he went into the tv business……in 1982 our house in Pasadena burned down. He and Marcia showed up on Saturday in their Ferrari with the keys to the house next door to them…..they had bought because they didn’t like the neighbors. We moved in that day.

I am in deep, deep grief……….. at the reception………and a girl…..I have known (forever) comes up and says…..”OMIGOD!! I read Slim Paley…….I saw you made a comment!”

I said……”She lives about a block away from me! I bet she can hear my roosters!” (not that we have blocks here)

Isn’t that a lovely thing. I don’t know if your husband knew him……But a nicer man has never been in show biz…….at least that I knew.

I thought that was lovely!! You have fans all over! Even in Pasadena…!!!!!!

I am astonished anyone is online in Pasadena!!!!!!!!

    Penelope

ps i write to you knowing that I am not expecting to be published……I don’t want to blow your cover!

    I will never tell!!

    XXOO

I will invite you to lunch……anytime…….it would be fun; if you want!

  5. Slim, one of your most beautiful if not the most beautiful posts to date, of course you know I am partial to Autumn! The monarch butterfly frock by McQueen’s atelier was astonishing, along with the shoes. Thanks, totally gorgeous post.

  6. Glad I checked in with Slim before going to bed. That McQueen collection is beyond beautiful. Almost hard to believe Sarah Burton could rise to the occasion when it must have been so difficult. Great soundtrack to accompany the fall colors, but I am still hanging on to the last days of summer…not going gently into that good fall night just yet…

  7. Bryan Ferry is one of my all time favorites for years … all his music … so cool that you love his music … swooning over the autumnal color combinations and photos that you posted … how do you come up with such a beautiful array that flows like a painting from start to finish … bravo SLIM and yes! bravo to Sarah for carrying on for McQueen – love the all the feathers! Magnifique!

    • Thanks Kat
Wouldn’t you know- I cannot seem to find that credit-I think I need to get on Mobile Me or figure out some way to see all my desktops from one computer. Or hire a full time photo organizer!
If it shows up I will add it to the post.
Doesn’t that make you want it even more now?! but hopefully I just saved you a ton of $ 🙂

  9. Thank’s for SO beautifully bringing my favorite season to me. Here in South Florida, the only burned color we get is the grass when the sprinkler is broken! 🙂

  10. Hey Slim! I’ve been sitting in a hospital room for 5 days straight and your blog puts the biggest smile on my face!!! I love the “Louie” and SO glad capes are in. It will hide my big a– that’s expanding every minute that I sit on it in this hospital! Thank you dahling!
oh, that Sun Valley home must be spectacular! jealous…..

  11. Beautiful, as always. Sarah Burton, what a star — what a treat it would be to wear any one of those dresses — especially the one with the pheasant feathered skirt. Avalon, Brian Ferry is swoon inflicting — thank you for reminding me to add it to my play list.
    Happy fall, Slim Paley.

  12. Oh! I just published a recipe for my favorite October confection — chocolate covered tarantulas. Sweet, salty, crunchy and chewy — frighteningly delicious. And they are great to display, almost cute ..but in a dark way. I think you’ll like them!

  13. I LOVED THIS POST SOOO MUCH.
Every fashion shot stunning. The colors exquisite. Loved that hair art. I always loved that song.
Happy way to start a new week , hope you have a good one ,thanks againxo

  14. Beautiful! The creativity of McQueen! Amazing. Thank you for not letting us forget what an amazing talent he is. I love you blog because it is a mini inspiration break every day. Thank you.

  15. Love the McQueen stuff. I want to wear it while running through the mist shrouded woods with Russian violin music playing in the background.

Thanks for pulling all those pics together as one, it was an eye vacation.

    Cheers!
    J.

  16. Perfect Canadian Thanksgiving post, thank you! It’s a COZY day here in Vancouver.

That kinda looks like back hair on that model in your 3rd to last post

  17. Love that butterfuly top … wow. I mean WOW. A show stopper. Have always been a big fan of Kenzo too. Great blog. God bless the fall.

    • Gees- you guys are killing with that ring! I thought it was Van Cleef & Arpels too, but no can find. I REALLY want it now.

PS. Is it wrong that I keep coming back to my own post and playing the music??! what a great song!
(or is it just the memories and I’m just getting old 🙁 )

  18. Great post slim. Beautiful fall colours. I am with Canuck, I also thought back hair. (SAY IT ISN’T SO) Get better soon.

  19. Thank you for brightening my day. My daughter called at 7 a.m. this morning (the mommy alarm went off)! But it was to say how excited she was that you had left a comment on her blog (missfancy). I love your taste, your photos and your interiors. I love how you group by color and texture and sense. Thank you again.

    Julia

  20. My very favorite time of year and my favorite colors! And I will be coming back to hear that song over and over too. I have always loved it too and yes, brings back great memories!

  21. Slim, your abilities as a witty wordsmith, photog and collagist are unmatched! One of your best! Admiringly, Roarke.

  22. I love this post. The colors are exactly what I see when I look outside my window here in Michigan. Best time of year, in my opinion.
The Fall Coziness in Sun Valley looks so inviting. I could read a book and just stare out that window all afternoon, Slim.
I love that you might bring out your poncho and pretend it’s a cape. That’s adorable.
    You continue to amaze.

  23. Thanks Roxie and Babe xx (love having a Roxie, a Babe and a Gaj!)

Alex- “More Than This” evocative of a wonderful time and then some…

Thanks Marsha- what a lovely comment, and yes, those threads are hand picked and shredded- those girls are just being naughty (happy face with devil horns)

Lola- I’ve always loved Kenzo too. Reminds me of when I lived in Tokyo for a short time and spent all my hard earned cash on Kenzo, Kansai and crazy shoes, and danced the nights away in even crazier ‘discos’ 🙂

Julia- I receive an alert when my blog is mentioned- that’s how I discovered your daughter’s funny post about my blog. I’m flattered I’m now ‘talking’ to two generations under one stylish roof!

    Roarke -that’s so nice!

Jackie and Emily, B.B.B., K.R. & Kelly – look forward to more Fall coziness as these autumn colours are the MOST inspiring tones- everywhere I look lately I see a potential post photo. If only I had more hours in the day…

  24. What a great Autumn inspired post. I wish we experienced Autumn here – the colours are sooo rich.

Sarahs collection is to die for – I’m always amazed how designers come up with their designs – especially really unique ones like hers. Such a feminine collection. Thanks for sharing 🙂
