We enjoyed a gorgeous weekend here in Santa Barbara, hope you had a lovely couple of days as well.  Did you watch the Emmys? I don’t think there were too many upsets or surprises, other than perhaps Charlie Sheen who was shockingly subdued and well-behaved.  Good for him-maybe he is Winning after all. I was happy that “Downton Abbey” won several Emmys. The 2nd season premiered in the UK tonight (Sunday) It’s going to take some willpower on my part not to grill my friend in London for details!   I thought Jane Lynch was funny and made a fine host but here’s my guilty little secret; I’ve never once watched “Glee”.  Of course I never tried out for school plays, the band or cheerleading either so maybe it’s just not in my genetic makeup. As I’ve mentioned once before, my stage debut as a tiny ballerina was a rather traumatic experience that rendered me performance anxiety-ed through high school so suffice it to say no drama teachers were exactly falling over themselves to cast me as “Sandy” in “Grease”

But, enough about me.   Drew Barrymore’s dress was stunning, as was Sophia Vergara’s and while the preponderance of red gowns at the Emmys came as no surprise, it was a little unusual to see virtually no black, don’t you think?  Gwyneth Paltrow was one of the few stars wearing it in a midriff baring lace gown by Pucci. Thoughts??  Her black & white diamond earrings, diamond bracelets and a diamond & onyx ring, supposedly weighed in at over 100 carats.

Wait, back to me…maybe I should have persevered with the ballet.

Oh well, next life.

Speaking of black & white  (How’s that for a segue?!)

This is after all, a post about stripes not dashed dreams, so let’s get started;

Pretty cool, but I hope there isn’t a bar upstairs

and that is probably the first time I’ve ever said those words.

  1. Haven’t had a TV in 20 yrs so didn’t see Gwyneth Paltrow’s midriff baring black lace dress live–just in print. Love her/her hair/make-up and the material of the dress….but thought the material was too busy to break the line with the exposed skin. To me that looks better with a solid like all white. Also, for her shape/long limbs….think if it were all one piece/long sleeves/w boat neck wd have been much smarter. IMHO

    Love the black & white!

  2. PS SP–Once sitting outside Pierre Lafond (back in the Jurassic Age) a film star couple who-shall-remain-nameless (Momma didn’t raise no name droppers) were at the little table next to us….their children were young and climbing on the car. Wifey screeched, ‘Get off the Rolls it’s rented.’ Classic.

  3. Love the striped Balenciaga bag. I also don’t watch Glee. I watched it a couple of times thinking I would like it for the singing and dancing but stopped because I didn’t like the mean spirited tone. Here’s my confession – I still have my blonde, pony tailed Barbie in her black & white striped bathing suit. She looks just like the blonde ones in your photo. She’s tucked away somewhere, but guess I just can’t say goodbye. Great post for a Happy Monday morning!

  4. Hello Slim,
I always think Black and White is so chic and if I ever had the chance I’d like to gussy up a black and white room in the Fuschiadome, but you’ve got to be careful or it can look a bit un-cosy . My sister in Honkers ONLY wears black or white. I know. Talk about Disciplined. That little Australian girl from Charlie’s Angels looked divine in pale pink bugle beads at the Emmys but Gwynnie let me down (again- I’ve come to expect it really) in that lace Pucci Get Up. Pucci should be colourful and Swirly. It just SHOULD. It’s what Emilio would want. I’m going to dress the baby is tonnes of white this summer. So crisp. But no black. Too aging on his dear little 6 month self. I always do what makes me happy. It’s the Australian Way. Plus I am Far Too Old to waste time doing stuff that makes me miserable. Have a lovely week Slim. Love FF xx

    • Yes F.F.
I do believe it IS the Australian Way. Someday I hope to get there.
That’s quite funny imagining a little Johnny Cash baby dressed in all black!

  5. Never have watched Glee, or a Reality Show and I am truly Ok…Your photos made me smile this beautiful Monday Morning. Thanks, Slim

  6. Slim, we didn’t do Grease in high school – it was Bye Bye Birdie and our drama teacher would have loved to have cast you…although our school productions were no “Glee” I have fond memories (don’t know if the audience felt the same way…). Glad to see Downton Abbey won a couple of awards…have you seen the British production of the Forsyte Saga from 2002/03? very stylish, I’m sure you would love it

  7. Good morning, SP!

Yes! How gorgeous and timeless! Don’t you think? Oh, I love this post and I think every woman should have a black & white striped top. I think it’s so classic and chic.

I just want you to know I love your comments on my “cool or fool”!!! They always make me laugh and it’s always great to see you there!

    Have a blessed week!, gorgeous u!! :-)

  8. Leave the midriff for those in their 20′s and 30′s or lucky 40′s with tight skin.

    Go, Pottery Barn!

Does your camera shoot video? If so, I am ready to take the plunge.

  9. Slim, I tried watching Glee once but hated it. Didn’t like Gwyneth’s dress.

Is the Lands End blanket recent? Just tried to find it online.

Will keep “Do More of What Makes You Happy” as my focus for the week!

  10. Slim wonderful post! Pucci and Paltrow don’t mix. Her midriff looked like a bad pair of pantyhose. Don’t these girls ever look in a full length mirror. The proportions were off. Not one dress really stood out this year. They were all really boring. I miss Bjork! That swan was a nice black and white.
Yeah for Downton Abbey that was the highlight of the evening.
Here’s to a Black and White Day! Cheers!

  11. Fabulous post Slim. I love black and white, always have, in the home old movies, photos. I had to really think twice about having so many items in my closet, yikes sooo many white pieces, felt I would be one of the servers at a cocktail party, and ignored!!!!
Lovely happy fresh start to my week. I know its going to be a very happy one as my beloved Brother and wife coming from Down Under to visit. I watched the Emmys and enjoyed. Will visit Pierre’s for the pasta fun.
Wishing you and yours a great week also. ox

  12. Very striking post – love black and white. Always elegant and VERY dramatic. I hope no butterflies were harmed during the creating of this post : ) !!

  13. I just have never liked black/white…I am an earthy toned person (green eyes, brownish red hair)….have you ever noticed that people with blond hair, blue eyes always love pastels and people with black hair look stunning in black and white…….however with that being said those Prada shoes and all the other images really are beautiful.

  14. I don’t have a TV, either…..mind killing for the most part. But these black and white photos really get me going. Love the first bathroom. Have a great week doing what you love (making your followers happy). Mary

  15. “Pretty cool, but I hope there isn’t a bar upstairs

and that is probably the first time I’ve ever said those words.”

    you’re funny!

I only watched a tiny bit of the Emmys but I did tape it so I’ll watch today. I did see the guy from Modern Family accept his award…I love him!
I don’t like Glee, and nor do any of the people that I know, I’m not sure how it got as big as it did?

Great post, loved all the photos.

oh and I did see Charlie Sheen on stage, so well behaved, good for him!

  16. I must ask my Canadian friends to bring me some humbugs. One of many treats I miss along with scotch mints, McIntosh toffee, and Eat More chocolate bars.

I notice you often reference Canadian items. Did you live there at one time?

Your posts add beauty and creative energy to my day. Thank you. Joy

  17. Slim,
I always love your take on life! I think this was one of the best Emmy shows I’ve seen in a very long time. I laughed and had fun. I love Modern Family so it was okay by me that so many awards went to that show. I also love Downtown Abby and was thrilled for them. I confess, Glee was my favorite the first couple of years but it’s maybe at a crossroads for me. If you ever watch it view if from the first episode on…it truly is (or used to be) uplifting.
Not sure I liked Gwyneth’s dress but truly, she would wear a potato sack and be beautiful and cool.
    Karen

  18. Love this post Slim. Love black and white! My painter is here spray painting my outdoor wicker sofa and chairs black. I am having the cushions reupholstered in green and cream stripe, but after seeing this post, am regretting not picking black/white stripe! Love all your images. Where on earth do you find such perfect ones!?

  19. I second the comment about your amazing ability to weave together a beautiful, literate and fanciful stream. Plus, you’re funny as hell!

  20. I’m not allowing myself to like Pucci no matter who’s wearing it due to a shopping trip in Vegas years ago. My daughter and I were looking while my son quietly and politely sat on the sofa and the clerk (or Clothing Advisor or whatever he was called) looked at him disdainfully and said he couldn’t sit on the couch because he might get it dirty. Poo on Pucci…

  21. Gorgeous post Slim!!!

Seeing all the black & white stripes produces a phantom taste of “licorice” in my mouth – isn’t that odd?

  22. This is a brilliant post. I also like the horizontal wide black and white stripe on a hall wall. Like you, can’t wait for the 2nd season of Downton Abbey, but at least The Good Wife starts this week.

  23. Slim, Thanks for the tip on how you created the butterfly image. You’ve inspired me to actually read “The Idiot’s Guide to Photoshop” which is sitting on the shelf next to me and give some of this a try. Best, R.

  24. Hi there, Love your wonderful Post, as usual, you are really hilarious and it’s always a visual feast. You really should consider a virtual magazine, I will come and work for you! If the little runner from Domino can create Lonny and make it a raging success, well I’m just sayin! Fashion, sometimes comes right up to the line of good taste (or over it in the case of Karl’s boots), don’t you think? Since you asked…I prefer to see gowns, gorgeous, heart stopping gowns, save the sexy black, transparent dresses for another occasion. Maybe a private one? I tried to watch Glee, twice, not my thing, you are wise to avoid it. The only reason I have ever become competitive at a sport was ballet, as my teacher used M &M’s for her reward system. My friends and I figured out that we could charge them at our local club, where the golfers bought their cocktails! So, no more ballet. I love black and white, great looking and so timeless. Thank you so much, I tried hard to make this short, sorry!

  25. Love all those pictures! I went to the cutest coffee shop on one of my visits to Santa Barbara the other day and it was themed all black and white with Elizabeth Taylor photographs and dainty pearls and ruffles. So cute, I could have stayed there all day. A very quaint, well decorated hotel (that won’t bust your budget) to check out next time you’re in SB is The Sandman Inn. It’s a bit off the beaten track, and it’s not ultra luxe, but your pocketbook will thank you when you are sitting by one of the two pools saying “So glad I didn’t fork out $500+ for the Canary!” Enjoy your week!
