The Red Line

There was a red line

It started in the laundry alcove of our barn.

It’s sort of hard to explain, but let me make a long story short…

(for the first time in my life. Ever.)

L1150246

In designing the barn, I almost neglected to add a laundry area.

Let’s just get that out of the way first.

I mean, who thinks of laundry when designing a barn for boys??

Luckily, at the last minute (love those last minute Change Orders) we found a way to tuck one in, in the small hallway leading to the garage.  Because there was no window, and the room adjacent to the laundry houses all the guts, gadgetry and ‘guy stuff’ for the barn, our architect came up with the cool idea to remove one length of reclaimed wood and replace it with a ribbon of glass. An ‘electrical-guts-viewing window’ as it were.

Like I said, guy stuff. Then he added an LED multi-flitered light, which can be any colour, but I like the red.

When passing by at night it’s both cozy and very James Bond.

If James Bond did laundry.

Plus, it matches the cherry red washer & dryer I’ve lusted after for years.

That’s when it started.

  1. My iPhone dings, I look to see what’s up. Oh, it’s a post from Slim Paley. Time to switch to the laptop. As much as I love my iPhone, the screen just does not do the images you show us justice. As always, delightful. Red is my best color.

  2. Love your laundry room the rustic red light District. Congratulations on your 500th post! That is amazing! x

    • You are so damn funny – keep up the great work! Your blog is a pleasant break and also a reason to procrastinate doing my OWN laundry! Happy New Year!

  3. Hooray!! Oh sending a massive, fireworks lit “Congratulations!!!” to you for your big 500. You bring us all so much inspiration Slim. Thank you…

  4. A Red Letter Day! Congratulations! Every post better than the next! How is that possible?! But so true……

Sitting in a riad in Merrakech where a waiter JUST laid down in front of me a red placemat on a black carved table……serendipity…….

  5. You need to see the Valentino Virtural Museum. Fun and lots of red lines, too. Love the barn❤️
    MH

  6. And this is why I love your blog! Such an amazing eye- I love how your color stories come full circle and tie all the loose ends together.
Congratulations on 500! Well done, Slim

  7. Aaaah, the boys barn!! Being one of your looongtime followers, I remember your blog from waaay back when (maybe 4 years?) you mentioned plans for building it. I have been wondering about it since have a personal interest with my 4 guys in the household! I’d love to have one to tuck them away in especially during Sunday football (and Monday night football, and college football and…)!
Laundry room looks awesome, can we hope to see the rest of the barn?

Congrats on the 500th superb post, and thank you for keeping me indulged, entertained and in the know!

  8. Congratulations on your 500th! Here is to the next 500 :) PS I think a touch of red and touch of black completes the room. But I do hope you come out with a coffee table book soon Slim xx

  9. This is my most favorite post of yours to date. I have been drawn to a red exclamation point of color for years especially integrated with neutrals. Your examples are wonderful.

  10. first, congratulations on prolific postings! second, what timing…we are building a house in the northwest and will use the “new” trend of charring the planks for siding, then inserting a thin strip of color in between… it was to be red…then we thought, being the northwest, maybe that certain forest green like a nod to the color of lodges…but maybe we should go back to red?

  11. Congratulations, kudos & bravo on your 500th post! And it’s a brilliant one. Love the dash of red, especially when it’s a line (or stripe – as you’ve shown before). You’ve raised my serotonin levels with the fab images & made me chuckle with the little pooch. What more could I ask for on a Friday morn?
    All the best to you!

  12. Fantastic Post with a title that piques one’s curiosity! As always, you have a fabulous array of photos, all with a shared theme.
Congratulations on your 500th post! Thanks for all the inspiration, beauty and laughs. I look forward to 501….

  13. THAT laundry room….wowzer!! Doesn’t that red just get you to look…it really is all around…and I luv it!! Started with “racing stripes” down the back and seat of my antique chairs…oh, the possibilities… KUDOS on the big 500!! Thoughts on 501?? franki

  14. Slim, there are many, many reasons why I love your posts, but this one really highlights your uncanny ability
to be observant of things most of us never see, and then you curate them into this amazing visual treat! That
scarab beetle is so beautiful! Cudos!
And here’s to the next 500 posts, my dear!

  15. Congratz on your 500th post! … and I’ve read every single one of them:)

Maybe 2014 will bring us a Barn post? or even a pink chandelier ?

  16. Congratulations on 500!! I love your barn laundry room. And being you, it was a perfect lead in to eye candy and fabulous inspiration. Someone above me mentioned a coffee table book by you…brilliant idea. I think you should.

  17. Congratulations on your 500th post!
Your keen powers of observation are always spot on. Loving the red line that anchors this post. Like others I’d love to see more of the barn.
    Enjoy your weekend Slim!

  18. I love your use and vision for color. Thank you for the inspiration. PS the cute guy in the middle works too.

  19. Congratulations Slim! What an accomplishment. I love your posts. You inspired me to start my own blog. Pop open some champagne this evening and relish your achievement. :)

  20. Happy 500th! I would have guessed that you would have picked red for the window, with your love of red & white stripes. I second the notion of seeing the barn in all its boy glory! How is it you have written 500 posts and all of them are entertaining, creative, beautiful and funny?! You really have a gift and we are all grateful that you share it! xo

  21. I am not a guy (you probably know that) but I am kind of in to gadjets myself. I love red, though. Just do not think of me as odd just because I am female and I love gadjets!

  22. Congrats on the 500th! Having just returned from a long awaited trip back to the Adriatic coastline of Abruzzi (patria mia) I discovered there, both the young and middle-life choose RED to express their preference on accent colours…even down to a red tiled bathroom in a rental in Vasto Marina…vivacious and tart. Bianca

  23. I, too, have lusted after that red washer and dryer and it looks like doing laundry in that barn would actually be a pleasure. Also, sad, to say I recognize the red in that typewriter ribbon….what does that tell you about my age?! Congrats on the 500th post…I have read and enjoyed them all.

  24. Slim,
What a cool barn, I love the wood used. The red line is very cool, nice that you tied it in with the red washer and dryer.
I look forward to the next 500 posts.
    xo,
    Karen

  25. Congrats and what a clever idea – love the glimpse of sleek modern tech with the rustic chic! Reminds me of those old boywatcher sunglasses – remember those?

  26. That is one of the best booking laundry rooms I have seen !! …..not the proper use of the word “booking” but you know what I mean :)
who was the architect ? and love the rest of the red pops of color

  27. I LOVE your laundry area. What are the dimensions approximately? I’m just about to create a laundry area that i DID forget to make about 30 years ago. Love the red lines everywhere.

  28. SP,
Congrats on 500 posts! I’ve enjoyed them (almost all), immensely!! Over the last year, I’ve worked my way through the majority of the archives (and all the comments from your fantastic and loyal readers) with just a bit of 2012 left, I’m quite close to completion. Let me just say, the whole thing is F-ing fabulous! I’m a lover of fashion/home decor and crave the visuals you provide (like, seriously. I NEED them in my life!) I love your sense of humor (we would be fast friends;) and I have incredible wanderlust that will never be satisfied except through what you provide here. With all that said, Happy 2014 and please don’t stop doing what you do so well; keep us laughing, keep traveling and reporting back from far away places and delight our senses–eyes & ears and perhaps one day, noses/scents;) with your breathtaking photos, internet images, food, fashion and home decor. LOVE.IT.ALL!!

Here’s the part where I ask for something…
Can I beg for an addition when you go forth with your website facelift (and maybe even if you scare and don’t go through with the surgery, can you potentially figure out how to do this?) Please add a “back to the top” quick button to the bottom right side of the page (maybe above your “follow” button?? I’m no techie.) It would be utmost appreciated (especially by tablet users) as I can already feel the pain of any new reader that runs onto your blog and wants to read through the entire thing–comments and all. And believe me, they all want to:)) It is endless paging and paging up and down from the text to the comments and back to the top whether archives or other topics. Hard to explain but believe me, the button would be a MAJOR improvement; like removing eye bags that don’t allow proper vision anymore. Or maybe because it is just more visually appealing, like Ali Wentworth (she looks great!:))
Can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2014!! XX

    • What a lovely comment Mic, thank you!!
and a “back to the top” button is such a GREAT idea…WHY didn’t I think of that?! I will definitely try to add one when I get my, er, ‘facelift’.

  29. Miss Slim. Your wonderful ability (and dont think everyone has it, they dont!!!!!!) to raise my consciousness to all the beauty that surrounds me. This week I see the “red line” everywhere!! Love your extraordinary sense of humour. Well done on the fantastic 500. No pressure, but, cant wait for the next 500!!!!! Regards from New Zealand

  30. An extra ordinary post to mark an extra ordinary acheivement. That’s why we can’t get enough of ya Slim!

  31. Wow another new favorite post! I don’t know how you find all these amazing images and them make us all realize that it’s cool idea and trend! Now I am even loving red more.
Congratulations of the 500th! That’s a lot of posts. You should be proud! It takes a lot of patience and creativity to keep up a blog of this quality.
    xx

  32. I want to sincerely thank all of you who take the time to leave your lovely comments-not just on this, my 500th post, but consistently over the years. I can’t answer every one, as much as I would like to, or I’d be posting even less frequently than I do, but please know you’re all truly appreciated. What a sweet, supportive group-I love you all!! xx

  33. Shazaaamm!!!! My “red” moment at age 9 (No, NOT Thaaat! eeeww)…….my father let me “design” his man cave…and yes, the stairwell walls that led to his heaven, was,… bloody red and 45ish (i mean just a few years later), it still is….and yes, by trade and academia, I am an interior designer to this day…..because of that “red” moment…….”clink”, here is to your 500th, I am drinking a lovely RED wine in your honour! :)

  34. I was inspired by your red line post & find that my eye has been going in that direction all day now, searching for design moments where I can too create “the line”! Exposing a barn board section with the red-lit glass pane was a brilliant idea by your architect. Congrats on your success!
