Candy Cane Memories

Long time readers know well my love of red & white stripes, so needless to say the abundance of this happy combo at Christmas time always puts a smile on my face.

The  department store Santa’s knee changed from year to year, but no matter how bony the perch or fake the beard, we always knew there’d be a candy cane reward to soothe our performance anxieties, right?!

.

.

Verrry nervous…

Can I get my candy cane yet???

.

.

Of course Shirley never had that problem

Don’t you just love her?!

  1. You look Darling. What a sweet photo. I happen to have some of that “candy cane twine” love it, for winter it’s a candy cane look, in the summer, it feels very maritime.

  2. We always hang a few boxes of candy canes on the tree. A reward for coming in close to appreciate the work of the “decorating elf”. Wishing I had buckled down and finished today-too much fun in “blogland”. I’ll reward myself tomorrow with the Martini – Cheers!

  3. You look precious sitting on Santa’s lap, but I must say, Santa looks a little creepy. No wonder kids are afraid! I want to wear the ruby slippers, drink the martini from the peppermint shot glass, and drive off into the sunset in the candy cane golf cart. Peace on earth!

  4. love this Peppermint post ..and LOVE your dress in your santa photo…with the black tights!!..I am using the anthropologie twine this year wrapped in brown “parcel post” paper :) simple and perfect!!

  5. Ummmmmm just finished a peppermint swirly pop from Hammonds candy plus watched Johnny Depp in Willy Wonka…peppermint martini is new to me-sounds good except for the martini part!! The photo of you and Santa was so precious! I agree that you were cuter than Shirley!

  6. You were adorable, I think I had the same jumper, and was just as terrified. I had the benefit of a twin brother though, so I never had to do it alone! My favorite Santa picture of my oldest child is in San Francisco at I. Magnin, she never cried, but she did that day. Bloody Murder. I want to ride off in that glorious golf cart, drinking shots of your peppermint martinis, out of your adorable shot glasses. Now that sounds like fun! Joy to the World!

  7. You Re toooooo much……out doing yourself each day!
If I drank maybe that candy cane martini would get me in that Xmas mood here where summer keeps rolling in.
Looooove the advent ideas…especially…….hmmm don’t know which one I like the best…..maybe the clothes pins….eminently doable.
…and agree, that Santa upon whose knee you sat would have made me nervous too……best Santa photo we have is of first born wailing……I kept trying to get him to stop and the department store photog kept telling me I’d love it later (probably just trying to get us to move along)….but it is my favorite!
    Happy season to you!

  8. What a divine girl you were but you do look a bit nervy. I’m taking the baby to meet santa this week at a department store and I am pretty excited about the photo.

I’ve been trying to sort my Christmas table options. This year I’m doing red white silver and gold. maybe some white.

Do you loathe polishing silver as much as me? I long for servants x

    • You may want to try the silver dip stuff with one change…….don’t dip your things in. Wet the corner of a towel and wring it out a bit. Then dip it in the silver dip. Rub it over the silver you want polished. Wet the silver piece before wiping it so you can control the amount of tarnish that is removed. That is the bad part of that silver dip stuff, it takes off too much tarnish. Using the wet corner of a towel will only take off most of the tarnish and leave the detail of the silver still having some of the black left. Then rinse it and dry it.This cuts polishing time for me. A bit loquacious. Sorry! But this works for me.

  9. Big smile–what fun. What a darling poised little girl ( AKA #22835) you were. Peppermint Martini….gotta love Santa. ;) Whoever owns that red & white stripped run-around cart must be a kick.

  10. Slim, You should try and find images of the exquisite red-and-white beach house on Harbour Island decorated by Biba’s Barbara Hulanicki’s. It’s part of the Coral Sands hotel, but it’s a private beach house set right on the beach that guests can rent (for a tidy sum!). It has the most divine beachfront terrace and living area decorated in red and white stripes. You’d love it. Janelle McCulloch

  11. Thanks for the lovely memories. When I was a child there was a department store in Athens that used to have a Santa and I had my photo taken with Santa every year. Beautiful.

  12. Now that I finished decorating the tree and the house (6 very full days), I think I deserve a candy cane martini. By the way, you were adorable as a child and still are. Have a great day.
    Best…Victoria

  13. That’s a very nice photo of you with Santa. You must have made your parents proud! Knowing your fondness for most things from Trader Joes and all things with red and white stripes, I’m wondering if you have come across TJ’s Pepppermint Salt Water Taffy? They look very cheerful and festive – taste pretty good too.
I love the cane mobile – how fun is that!
    Thanks for another great post.
    Ruth

  14. That’s what I forgot to put out–the old or better, vintage Santa photos. Your’s is beyond precious!
Red and white is an instant mood lifter for some reason. Caspari has a fantastic red and white striped wrap this year…just the right size stripe to look happy but dignified…those Brits know their paper!

  15. Look how adorable you were (are)! I think that Santa had an awesome twinkle in his eyes. Great post. In fact, I’m going to fire up a candy cane cocktail this Friday.

  16. I’m having another “when i was young….” moment!

We used to make candy canes with my grandmother! I remember her as being a master candy magician — always coming up with something wonderful for the holidays, whether it be easter, valentine’s day or christmas! we always looked forward to the “buttered hands” that molded the canes! making them is really quite easy, but beware of the hot liquid! a spill left me with a small scar on my wrist, which has actually become a fond reminder of a woman who lived simply but abundantly. not to mention “sweetly”!!

  17. Surely Norman Rockwell must have used that delightful illustration on the cover of one of December’s Saturday Evening Post issues!!! So perfectly lovely.

  18. You are truly the best. A friend of mine went to Pier I and bought the candy striped martini glasses and we had these after work. The glasses are beautiful! and we will def be having these martinis Christmas Day. Merry, Merry!

  19. Ok wait… did our “on Santa’s knee” pictures cross in the ethers??? Well, I’m going to make one of those candy cane martini’s right this second to celebrate! Love ALL of this, oxoxo

  20. great post reminds me of the first time I saw a real candy cane and real snow, on a visit to Toronto Christmas 1967, we didnt have candy canes in Australia in those days.

  21. uh…err…me thinks that Shirley’s Santa had one too many pepppermint martini’s…nice to be a candy stripper, I mean striper…. :)

  22. Slim,
I do hope you have that photo of you and Santa framed, and sitting in a Christmas vignette each holiday season. I love to decorate with old Christmas pictures, and this one deserves a special spot!
