Coral on my library mantle

Interiors…fashion & beauty… accessories & jewelry, be it traditional or modern style,
in summer or winter…
Coral & Black
is one of the most elegant, tasteful colour combinations of all, don’t you think?
Pearls are glorious, but unless they’re worn carefully (which actually means recklessly and with abandon) they can feel very “Ladies Who Lunch” to me. Turquoise is terrific but again, in my humble opinion, only feels appropriate for summer. As every dog has his day, every shell has it’s moment-Pukka shells, anyone??! But what is it about coral that makes it so timeless? So incredibly ‘right‘ in such a myriad of applications?
Is it simply the suggestion of exotic locales that sets our hearts aflutter?
An illicit memento we can no longer just fancifully break off and tuck into our swimming trunks, these crusty roses from the sea, once delicate souvenirs of The Grand Tour, are more precious than they’ve ever been.
Shall we take a look?

This is one of the most special pieces in my vintage clothing collection; a floor length black silk coat, lined in coral silk crepe, and hand painted in delicate gold and silver paint & teeny, tiny beads. I bought this and a black & red silk devore velvet tunic trimmed in black ‘monkey’ fur from a collection belonging to the infamous Marchesa Luisa Casati (she of the kohl rimmed eyes, pet snakes and cheetahs)

Another Titian haired beauty was the great friend and muse to Yves Saint Laurent,
who passed away today at the age of 63 after a long illness.
.

Loulou was a great jewelry designer in her own right and loved her coral.

Havent even looked at the site yet! but what are you doing up so late silly girl!!!!Leslie M.
I’m always up. I’m a night hawk. How are YOU doing?!
Why are any of us still up?
Waiting for S.P. to post! I am inspired by the Novick cuff…
to paint a great shaped coffee table base matt black with a coral top. Maybe even go to the extra effort and reverse paint a glass top in coral. Thank you, Slim – more projects!
that sounds fab Linda- if you do it, please send a photo!
OMG! Do you really have one (two) of merches casati’s dress??
This is amazing!
Some years ago I read all about her!!
Did you read her biography? it was so interesting!
the tunic is amazing indeed!
I have forgotten a little about Coral…but this is a stunning reminder of one of indeed the classiest colors out there ! I feel inspired to go change a room or buy an outfit in these colors now !
OK, it’s a day ahead here is Auatralia, so how did you know that just last night, for a dinner out with new friends, I wore…………coral and black?…………(and again this afternoon bought not one…..but THREE vintage coral and black kimonos in a tiny Japanese hole-in-the wall.—-I just couldn’t decide which one to get!)……my new favorite combination for the Spring down here……….well, I guess thats because………..that’s what kindred spirits do……..if I might so bold as to call you my kindred spirit….!!?
Needless to say………this post makes me smile and sigh…….and wonder if you are chanelling throught the ether and forward in time to Downunder.
The color is stunning, especially seen through your lens. I love all the chunky jewelry and the homage to Loulou de la Falaise, a very talented woman.
Best…Victoria
I’m so sorry to hear about LouLou. I always admired her style.
It was so interesting to watch her work with Yves Saint Laurent in the film “Yves Saint Laurent – His Life and Times/5 Avenue Marceau 75116 Paris”. So sad she died far too young.
I am saddened by the absence of Lou Lou. A light has gone out.
But, as to coral and black–one of my favorites. Coral and rock crystal beads on black lanterns–perfection!! Super post! Note: the Alexander McQ dress with the coral shoulders–each one of those coral beads has the price tag of a semi-precious stone. Food for thought. Thanks. Mary
Good morning, SP!
How are you doing today?
I must say, I don’t like coral… the color. Maybe because I never had anything coral that really looked good on me, but it’s not my “thing”.
The interesting thing is, I read the whole post and loved the images. That’s when you know somebody is good. Even if you don’t love something, you get interested because it’s well written and well done. Good job!
Have a new week filled w/ great energy and health!

GLORIOUS! And, your belt!!! This was a “two cups of coffee” blog!! franki
What a great post to wake up to on an early Sunday morning. Your credit unknown pic reminds me a lot of Frank Lloyd Wright because the walkway and decor reminds me of my alma mater, University of Wisconsin-Parkside which is in Wright’s hometown, Racine. Here’s an interior image of the Johnson Wax building: http://www.greatbuildings.com/cgi-bin/gbi.cgi/Johnson_Wax_Building.html/cid_aj1511_b.html Do you see a little similarity?
Love this color combo. You are so right on the pulse.

I loved every frame of this post! Lord, have MERCY!!! Those vintage pieces you shared from your own collection are UNBELIEVABLY GORGEOUS!!! And the flowers from your garden have such spectacular color! Going back for more…..!
Great post – great coat btw. xoL
Such fabulous Images…yes Loulou, you will be missed! xxpeggybraswelldesign.com
Loving Loulou’s hair in the last photo. Thinking of taking it on next time I’m in the chair. : )
One word: Stunning!
Thank you for a brilliant and beautiful
post. As a designer for 25 years… I am
going to incorporate my own library … With
a scheme of corral & black!! Very sad of the
recent passing of Lou lou… A true beauty and icon.
Slim, you must get a book publisher! This blog is simply the most chic of all the blogs on the internet.
I think my heart skipped a beat when I rolled over the black and white room with the Hermes blankie and the zebra ottoman and the coral throw. I also loved the wingback chair against that contrasting background. Gorgeous!
Glorious Lulu, glorious post. Love coral eternally! Your coat is astounding!!
So sad to hear of the passing of Loulou De La Falaise, such a beautiful and creative person. Your blog was wonderful, colourful, and brilliant photos. Such a delight to read on a lazy Sunday morning. Thank you.
Love all the coral, and I also love Turquoise for winter, but only with gold metal!
Can’t have enough of either.
Thank you for reawakening me to an appreciation of the color coral. I’ve never loved it, but here in the photos you’ve selected I can see it’s unique and elegant statement.

The enameled containers are exquiste! All the gorgeous shades of coral, the timeless beauty of all your images, none compare to the photos of your roses–just can’t outshine Mother Nature!
I’m loving black and coral too at the moment – How did you know?
Your beautiful blog is a visual feast, and I being gluttonous where I candy is concerned want more, more, more! Love the charcoal walls with orange accents.
you had me at “coral”! the color can literally make me swoon. I painted my master bedroom closet door coral. it makes me happy.
love all your images.
joan
Elegant as ever.
Janet
A rather fun change from all the white rooms we’ve been seeing!
I don’t know how you manage, but you always open my eyes to colors that I would have said I didn’t care for. Love the Elle Decor room and of course your roses! The feathered scarves are amazing. Thanks for this.
Karen
I have the same coral and black decoration that you do. I bought it at Lars Bolander’s shop in NYC at the height of the coral madness that was gripping the world at the time. Now I bring it out only as part of a shell display I put together for the mantel in the dining room at Darlington House, where it looks marvelous. I adore it.
cant believe it, I tore out the Celine bag too!
The flowers from your garden are lovely!
hi slimster,
i have lots of black but no red coral in my life. i’ll try and fix that pronto.
this is a damn pretty post.
i wear my turquoise year round though. and i love bob dylan. that’s 2 strikes – i’m still in the game. yay.
xo
ps – i thought of 2 really great posts for you to do. if you ever run out of material, hit me up.
Are you SURE about Bob Dylan?!
Great color combo!
Love that Prada belt!
The only color of lipstick for this green eyed girl is coral. I love coral! My graduation ring was a big oval coral surrounded by diamonds! Still love it!!! Pictures are beautiful.
