A Slice of Life

The month is whizzing by so fast there’s hardly time to talk! I remember this time last year I promised myself that this time this year (OK wait, did that make any sense?!) I would be finished my Christmas shopping already.  LOL.  It’s taking me 2 weeks to read 1 book at the moment and I’m still not finished.

It’s been a busy last few days in our little community. I attended the Santa Barbara Film Festival’s ‘Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film’ evening where Kirk, who is 94, presented the award to his son Michael.  As you may imagine, it made for a very moving evening. Would that we all be half as sharp and vitally alive at 94 (and writing yet another book!) as Mr. Douglas Sr.   After a serious helicopter accident, a major stroke, and two knee replacements in his 89th year, “Inspiring” doesn’t even begin to describe the force of nature that is Kirk Douglas.

The following night The Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation honoured another very special Santa Barbarian; the divinely talented Carol Burnett.  Hilarious memories and heartfelt moments ending with a touching tribute to Carol by  Jane Lynch were shared on stage during the course of an evening that raised a great deal of funds for a truly  incredible organization.

Another  beautiful morning it was, and the best part; Not only did our team take the trophy for the most money raised,

but an extremely well deserving member of the team won the Grand Prize; a trip for two to Hawaii!!

After the walk, I went over to my friend’s garden to once again pull a major raid on her Passion Fruit vines.

I mean really, who needs Hawaii??!

I swear, I can’t stop eating them, they’re SO delicious

I keep waiting for the tummy-ache.

A sweet little mailbox on our route.

And so, finally, to bed…

To hopefully finish that book

  1. What an inspiring weekend. I have an article by Kirk Douglas in my wallet. I read it when I need to get some perspective.
We wanted to go to Ojai Day, but PSAT’s and Mom and Daughter book group took center stage. Thank you for sharing you wonderful images. It’s the next best thing!

  2. Beautiful pictures, I need to get to the west coast someday! Thank you for walking. The first 2 events sound like TONS of fun! Lucky you. NO, that car doesn’t make you look fat:):):) XO, pinky

  3. The exquisite photo of the passion fruit flower is stunning! The intricacy, color, design, hands down, in my opinion, beat anything we try to create in our homes…It is through nature, I feel, that our color combinations, shapes, design arrangements are available to us to give us inspiration…but, Mother Nature cannot be beat!
I love your sense of humor that comes through in all your postings, Slim Paley!
You help lift my day when I read your posts.

  5. That sumptuous, copper honed, Santa Barbara Fall light that stretches to wake us in the morning and then makes another nod at the end of day. Our pleasure, Slim, that you continue to catch it in full grace.

  6. and such a wonderful “slice of life” it is! More people should focus on all the good things in life and the ways we all can make each day brighter–thanks for doing your part.

  7. I want your weather. I want your weekend. I want your town. I want your garden. I want your clothes. I want your Sun Valley home. I want your beach home. I want your weather again. I want your trips. I want your figure. I want your sense of humor. Etc. Etc. Etc.

  8. What a beautiful weekend. I’m sorry I never made it to Ojai when I visited California. It looks so charming and scenic. You live in a lovely part of the world. Thanks for the tour.
    Best…Victoria

  9. Slim is every weekend like this! It is good to hear you are involved in charitable events and having a lot of fun at the same time!! Isn’t that the way though, when you give you really do get back even more!

  10. Such a beautiful post. The last picture made me miss summer already. That little mail box… how cute!

Christmas? So many people talking about that right now. I’m not even sleeping lately, worrying about the birth of my son that will be in less than 6 weeks and to be honest, I’m not even sure how I’ll be able to get ready for Christmas this year. But I know that, no mater what we’ll have a very special one, after all the best gift is just arriving!

By the way, I’m so happy you liked the cottage I posted yesterday. Dreamy, huh? I also love red roofs! :-)

    Have a great day!

  11. Loved the first photo’s beautifully ombred tones moving from turquoise to peach. Did you try the Welsh Cakes? I looked up a recipe and they sound as though they would be good with tea. Thanks for sharing your lovely life. Best regards, Ruth

  12. Sounds like a terrific week! It’s very busy, but it’s a good busy. Thanks for your efforts supporting such an important cause!

  13. Darn it………….I knew we should have moved to the West Coast when we had the chance! So much to do and that weather. That is one busy weekend, hope you are lounging about, eating passion fruit, and finishing your book Slim. Much love XO

  14. you’ve got such a good sense of humour!! “does this car make me look fat?”… love it! (and no, it doesn’t).

  15. yes. the car does make you look fat.
but you know about cars and cameras…
    they always add 10 pounds.
another beautifully made post. and this
time close to my heart. we lost my
    sister-in-law to cancer last month.
with people like you and all those
people who care, helping in the fight,
maybe we’ll finally eradicate that horrible
    disease.
    love,
    tammy j

  16. Oh, Ojai. For a time during my childhood, my parents almost bought a house w/ a tiny bit of property there. Weekend trips back & forth from L.A., and in the end….they didn’t.

Now, what am I going to do with myself for the rest of the day to cheer myself up?

  17. I love your sense of style and appreciation of all things beautiful – would love your advice too. If you were planning a destination wedding, what would be your favorite resorts and/or places? Anyone else with great suggestions please weigh in too!

  18. While in Australia, before I knew what a passion fruit was… a beautiful white cake was served outside in a garden. party….. horrified when I was given my slice as I thought a bird had ‘dropped” on it… yellow-greenish stuff……yuk.. … I put it down, perplexed to see all the others gobbling up the cake……only later did I learn and love the beautiful seeds of this delicious fruit.!

  19. Dabbsie & IC Beauty; Don’t laugh, but I’m reading “Moonwalking With Einstein; The Art and Science of Remembering Everything” by Joshua Foer. (non-Fiction)
I’m not going to read anything into the fact that I just had to go to the bedroom to get the book to remember the writer’s last name.

Ruth- I cannot tell a lie-after inhaling a burrito as big as a baby’s arm, no room left for the Welsh cakes…but they seemed to be pretty damn popular.

Lauren- I don’t know where you live so that is a hard question. There are so many beautiful destinations but you don’t want to make it too difficult or costly for your guests to get there-that would be a big consideration.

Kelly- sorry about the Ojai thing…naughty, naughty parents!

  20. Fabulous!
I could see you in that Morgan with Chanel sunglasses and Hermes headscarf with Sawyer sitting next to you!

  21. Slim, my neighbor has a passion fruit vine growing very, very closely to the side walk. What should they look like when you pick them? Some are still green, some turning dark, and one on the ground this morning was beginning to wrinkle. I picked – I mean picked up – one of each color. Will the greener one ripen now that it was removed – I mean fell off – the vine?

    • You pick them when they’ve turned dark and eat them when they start to wrinkle up. Not sure if they ripen if picked off the vine while still green, I have a feeling they don’t.
