Hey, not so fast!

Enough already with all the talk of back to school, pumpkins and leaves turning.

There’s still some summer left, let’s not  rush things here People.

I, for one, will be dragged kicking and screaming from these last few weeks of partial fog, clearing by mid afternoon.

You’ll have to pry the sunscreen from my cold, pale hands.

Don’t you think you could flip these over, drill a hole and they would make fun shades for a hanging light fixture in a beach house?

Especially with a multi filament Edison bulb.

Hello. My name is Slim Paley.

I’m an Uggaholic.

Loving this new colour.

Not a great photo, but I love this summer dinner (taken with my iphone and yes, that’s a crusty old oven mitt wedged beneath the cookie sheet on the table, paper napkins & ice in the wine. Don’t tell Martha)  A table covered with brown craft, or newspaper, broiled Alaskan King Crab legs, lashings of drawn butter, fresh lemon and japanese pickles.

Oh, and of course truffle salt.

Happiness.

  1. hi Slim

As my mother used to say ‘No Labels on the Table’. But that is okay I forgive you because your Crab-White Wine-Butter Feast looks so nice. They are big crab legs. I think our crayfish or lobster are about that size?

Those driftwood bowls – I look at those and think ‘I could make that’ but then I get real because I think actually that kind of home made\ rustic\ just pulled this together is very hard to pull off as a DIY.

    Happy continuing summer to you.

    xo

  2. I love your blog. Found it just weeks ago and I’m a fan. I’m with you…summer isn’t over yet…it just started here in the Pacific Northwest!

  3. Oh so true…if summer could only go on and on! The beach shots are beautiful! You are so right–why must we rush the seasons? I just bought new white and khaki shorts today b/c they are so cheap, end of season…should have bought blue ones in ode to the ocean. And the ice in the wine with the oven mitt under the cookie sheet only confirms your humanity! Thanks Slim

  4. beautiful post as always. except…. i have to disagree. maybe if i lived in paradise where you do… but our summer started in may and we have had triple digit temperatures this entire f ‘ing summer. right now it is 7:50 pm here and it’s only 104. it got to 106 today. in the hundreds AGAIN for the next 7 days. week after week after week. irene would be a nice change.
can’t afford to move. no guts to shoot myself. just gotta look at blogs like yours and realize i’m not really in hell… just the middle of oklahoma! ok. my first comment and all i did was
whine. will do better next time. i promise!

  5. I’m with you – keep summer as long as we can. My favorite time is fall but I can wait! Thanks for the beautiful photos to keep summer going awhile longer.

  6. So, I went to the soup baubles site, and ordered a turquoise soap necklace and plan to……..wear it as a necklace…….!!!! That’s how YOU inspire ME!
    Thanks.

  7. Gorgeous !! Love all the blue. SO not ready for summer to be over either. The new Chanel polishes are gorg !

  8. I am TRYING to hang on to summer too, but it is getting hard! I adore Fall but will wait a bit. I would LOVER one more trip to the beach but…………………it is not to be:(:( Gorgeous photos, that crab feast made my mouth drool!!!!!!!!!! XO, Pinky

  9. dearest slim,
please delete my earlier rant. your exquisite site is not the place to complain about the weather!!!
i’ve just returned, as i so often do to your posts and enjoyed all the images again. simply beautiful. i did love the rainy scenes in new york too.
    thanks for your magical touch!

a long-time reader, first time commenter who had a very bad HOT day!!! :)

    • Dear Tammy-
Are you kidding?? You’re allowed to have a hot, cranky day- in fact, many of them!
Besides, I’m the Queen of Ranting about bad weather (just ask my husband) I have about 10 cities programed into my iphone weather app. I check them all the time and sometimes I’ll even complain about the weather in cities I’m not in. It’s what I do.
I’ve been reading so much about the crazy, seemingly endless heat down South. I can only imagine it must be getting very tedious.

Wish I could split the heat with you.

Go open your freezer and press your forehead against a big pint of ice-cream til it melts and you’re forced to eat it :)

      • Had to laugh as just yesterday, I was showing temps from one of the many cities that I have in my iphone to a friend. As if they would even care! But the 5 days of 105+ forecasts just blew my mind. Whereas, I am in an area where we only have forecasts of 101+ for the next 5 days! Love your photos!

  10. If you drill holes in the driftwood bowls to use as pendants please do a few extra and send them my way please! I love that idea, though I am not to be trusted with power tools and am pretty sure my results would be dangerous. (and husband grumbles too much when I foist crafty tool projects on him…) :) Love the blue Uggs…that might actually be the color that gets me to finally break down and buy a pair!

  11. No way am I going to let this summer go yet ……just re-read your post re: setting the bar – that alone will keep the mood going for another 2 weeks!

  12. it’s true! i am even starting to see holiday stuff making an appearance! although, i do have to agree with poor tammy…triple digits for that long is very ugly.
thanks for the refreshing pics…those shells are glorious!
curious…are you fooling around with pinterest anymore? i am just getting the hang of it.
thanks again for the beautiful diversion, as always!

  13. i will take your ice cream suggestion as a direct order!
on my way now to albuquerque…
still heat but of a lovely different sort! thanks

  14. Hi Slim, Great Post, as usual! I just have to (Obnoxiously, I’m sure) point out that you live in the land of gorgeous weather, we Southerners are sick to death of this hideous heat. Your wonderful post was fun, as usual, to look at, but I just opened the front door and scurried back in as the heat was already oppressive.Maybe the hurricane skirting up the coast will bring a breeze, I’m looking forward to it, as long as no one gets hurt! I am going to order those soaps on a string to make myself feel better! Your post on NY was wonderful too. Thank you, off for the freezer!

  15. Slim- You’re a girl after my own heart! Love your style, sense of beauty in words / visuals as well as your great humor, wit and heart. Absolutely my favorite post and favorite escape. Thank you! Now… can you share where one would find one of the pillows with the blue whales??

  16. ugh, the days are getting noticeably shorter here in Vancouver…I HATE THAT!
We were so ripped off this year with our weather.
It is supposed to be hot and sunny here for the next couple of days though so I’m going to make the most of it.

Love that bathtub and LOVE that crab feast!

Thanks for another great post, you made me chuckle:)

  17. You do make summer appealing. I finally tracked down truffle salt when we visited Central Market in Austin…now I’m hooked. Thanks a lot! No, seriously, I really like and Son #1 who lives in Austin promises to keep it coming should I run out.

Love the image of the shells and the sail boat with the checkers game on deck. Just returned from the dermatologist and sun exposure is out. :-)
    Karen

  18. For all of those in the triple digit area of the US, I can imagine you are ready to let summer go. For those of us blessed to be living in S CA summer can stay as long as it likes. Grand Post! xxpeggybraswelldesign.com

  19. Hi again! I just have to tell you that the bathtub is one of the coolest ones that I have ever seen! Awesome! Also, my Mother used to have a king Crab connection, so I grew up with it in the freezer at all times. I never got sick of it, even when everyone switched their loyalty to Stone Crabs, it’s the best! Pretty tables on the beach as well, this heat must really be getting to me. Thank you!

  20. Love, love, love the bathtub!! You find the most amazing photos!
    This posting was just sublime.
Summer only ends if you let it!

  21. Opps……….I reported you to Martha for those crusty oven mitts. Please do something about those before she shows up at your house. And I am with you on school talk, wishing the summer away. Too soon! As you know, Canadian schools don’t go back to after Labour Day in September so we are slow to give up on white linen, sandals, and sunscreen. Not too slow though, I did buy a gorgeous winter coat and some winter outfits today. Hope you enjoy the next few weeks Slim…….but this does mean you get your days back soon doesn’t it? Much love XO
PS. Is there some kind of training course I can send my readers to that will teach them to write longer comments like yours? LOL!
PS. You can’t leave comments on My Objects Of Desire page but you can click back and leave me some lovely ones on the main blog post. XO

  22. Love your gorgeous post! Four hours north in Carmel-by-the-Sea it’s been exceptionally foggy, too. September is usually our summer–she said hopefully. Thanks for the visual delights–esp the Gandia Blasco!!

  23. Very cute post Slim. It did hint of Fall a little. Summer was not that great, and as usual went in a blink. I loved the tub also, soap bangle, loved it all. I think I will buy crab legs for dinner tonight. Have a great weekend. Look forward to next post. ox

  24. I am SO with you ~~ back to who? I shall continue to enjoy every droplet of sun and warmth. I really love your beachcombing photos and that fantastic looking crab dinner. Yum, Old Bay on the table and ice in your wine, it sounds divine!

Stop by the market, we are leaving Mallorca and heading to swinging Barcelona.

    Enjoy!

  25. Very beautiful post, so visually entrancing, and so close to my heart. I spend most of the summer on the beach, and am grateful to have a tranquil, clean and commerce-free one just 10 mins from home.
Here’s my beach as it looked just 2 days ago: http://yfrog.com/keziirfj
    Happy summer!

  26. Love this post. I am SOOO not ready for summer to end! I have just returned, one night early due to the inconsiderate arrival of Irene, from camping in Acadia in ME. That was my “beach” vacation this year but I’ll take it. We had lobster, blueberry ice cream and amazing views of the ocean. Wonderful family time.
I have to confess that I was thinking of you while we were hiking, Slim. We did several miles through some wooded areas and the mushrooms were unbelievable! So many colors, sizes and shapes. It made me start to imagine a Slim Paley post on mushrooms: lots of pictures of mushrooms, mushroom inspired fashion and maybe a recipe or two? Plus truffle salt, of course.
Enjoy the last few weeks of summer! I’m going to try to squeeze all that I can out of it.

    • Sounds like you had a beautiful vacation Susan, despite it being cut a little short by “Irene”.

The mushroom post is a great idea! Let me put my thinking “cap” on :)

  27. Love it all but especially the seaweed photos and bathtub and those king crab legs. My ex-husband and his wife came to take me to dinner tonight. He’s the major producer of goat milk and goat milk products in the country and they brought me some of their new WHITE goat milk butter to try. I was wondering what to do with it and now I know. King crab legs and melted white goat butter for dinner after polo tomorrow!!!

  29. I’m with you Slim…want to hold on to summer till the very last grain of sand washes from between my toes…and then I will hear it calling in my dreams! Thanks for the beautiful photos;)

  30. Ahhh, I love your soundings of the sea. When we go to Del Mar I always sneak off for a while by myself before we have to hop on a plane back to KY. My family knows (and thankfully understands) not to ask where. I go down to the water, dive in, and try to soak up as much sea and salt and sand as I possibly can! It’s kind of a religious ceremony that perhaps a passionate woman like you can understand.
I then gather some seaweed and smooth beach stones to bring back home.
    My soundings of the sea.
    Loved this post. Thank you.
    Xo Lisa

  31. How can you tell when one of your readers has just been through Hurricane Irene and without power for a week? When she confesses the BEST thing about your post is the ice cubes in the white wine!
