Here we are, at the end of another wildly fleeting summer month already
Are you feeling well summerized yet? Have you been to the beach, or the lake? Maybe even the drive-in? (I have!)
Or perhaps you’re more of the gardening type? Have you been enjoying all the fruits of your labour?! My garden is in full-on blowsy mode at the moment. To be honest the old girl is in serious need of a new “Do”- you know like when you literally cannot wait one more SECOND to get your hair done? But no time, no time…where does it go??
Though I can’t complain about my roses this year. Even if I do say so myself, they’ve been pretty dang gorgeous. Now I’m always enamored with old fashioned roses; the delicate, breathy hues and lush crinolined layers of all the regal grande dames, but I must admit to having my head turned by this new, ridiculously loud orange fellow. His sheer brazenness just brings a smile to my face and a kick to any arrangement. I can’t possibly think of him in feminine terms. This rose is a dude who goes by the name of “Gingersnap” (Available at Rose Story Farm in Carpinteria) .
The colour is divine with turquoise, another of my all time favourite combos

Have you ever tried Lillet? My husband recently read Hemmingway’s “A Moveable Feast” for the first time and decided that he must try Lillet (being a favourite tipple of Ernest’s) Aaand guess who’s now drinking the Lillet and who’s gone back to his diet coke?!
Best served very cold with an orange slice.

Yes, summer is just whizzzzzing by. Thanks for the August bien venue –I just hope that our amazingly cool summer stays til November. Have a great week. Mary
Love the bowl full of orange goodness and the wonderful orange he-rose! Also covet those baskets. However, regarding the Lillet, in South Africa it is the brand name for a tampon, so it has no appeal. (I hope I haven’t spoilt it for you!) Have a great week. x Sharon
lol. Thanks for sharing Sharon.
I adore Cape Dutch architecture and I’m doing a South Africa-inspired project right now. I hope to actually visit there soon!
Orange and blue – one of my all time favorite color combinations – as you might have guessed!! And simply adore Lillet – was my standing drink for quite a while – may have to bring that one back (and yes, must be VERY cold! Love your roses – have a soft spot for slightly droopy but still appealing.
*** I’m sooo glad I “found” you just now, as I LOVE… YOUR… BLOG!!!!!!! ***

Hi Slim! Happy August to you!
I know i don’t comment enough as i should…as i would like to…. your blogs are so amazing, delightful, wonderful….. and that is not enough positive adjectives for your talent, taste and style! Your blog is my favorite….I save your emails, so i can go back to see them when i have time to read more, i happened to be up late and inspired to read this one right away and comment – especially on the Blu Mediterraneo by Acqua di Parma – the fico is my fave – a must every summer. Blessings to you… thank you for all you share to bring joy and beauty into others lives
How sweet Jeanne, thank you!!
You have done it again. Oftentimes, I stroll through comments, and think,”oh that is what I will comment on”, but, with you, there is always another great idea, and then another….so then I have to review it all.
I love lillet, but it is strong, I usually caution my guests if they haven’t had it before {or not, depending on the situation}.
And then there are all things botanical. I have always been curious about loquats. I have some friends who speak about them so casually. Do you think they are a part of the pomegrante family?
As you know, I love the combo of any shades of blue with any shade of orange. Well done, ms. slim. xo ebh
Loquats remind me apricots more than pomegranites, but I’m no sure what family they belong to. An unusual fruit to be sure, but they grow like weeds here in Santa Barbara.
ooooooh those bags are fantastic. Let me know if you find out where they are from. Good bye July .. see you next year. xoL
What a perfect entry for the First of August!! I loved your learning about Rose Story Farm and am in contact with them to see if I can get some of their rose bushes for my garden in Kentucky–Sutter’s Gold is my ultimate favorite rose and I hope to send you a picture of them blooming beautifully my garden next summer. I love Lillet and I love colbalt blue and tangerine. Thanks you for inspiring me.
Still LOVE you, your eye, your blog……Had just done this very color combo last week for the table on the deck overlooking the idyllic Pea Porridge Pond in NH where we spend the summer…with a 5 day escape back down to Brooklyn to get a grandson fix ( wait til that happens for you….you will adore it!). Used sea glass strewn about for the turquoise. AND bought Lillet last week cuz I read about a Lillet and champagne cocktail, though I thought I’d use Proseco with a twist of orange…what do you think?
Anyway, thought it would be perfect to put into turquoise blue glass and sip whilst drifting through the lily pads.
Will try to not be MIA but summer up here in New England has been perfect and once I hit the deck it’s hard to come back inside…although truth be told husband got me an iPad and I’m slightly addicted.
Enough got to go watch the loons and the beaver.
How about Proseco with an orange twist & a splash of Cointreau??
Perfect! annnnnd I don’t have to leave the premises to get it……more perfect!…now I’m thinking clear crystal glass so that you can see the amber color…………..off to pick blueberries on the island from my kayak…hope I don’t fall in!
Dear Slim,
I started drinking Lillet this summer after seeing it on one of your drinks trays. It is strong so I like to mix it with Whole Foods Stawberry Italian Sparkling Mineral Water and a squeeze of lime – delicious. However, I JUST read that sparkling water creates bloat! Is that true?
Anyway, you have created another gorgeous post that has lifted my spirits this morning. Love the colors. Love the frosty texture of the recycled glass beads with the velvety surface of the roses. You’re great!
Best regards, Ruth
Lillet w Whole Foods Stawberry Italian Sparkling Mineral Water and a squeeze of lime – YUM
and the answer to your question, unfortunately, is yes; sparkling water causes bloating
Thanks for the info. Will cut out the sparkling H2O – maybe that will get rid of those last 5 lbs!
Hmm..on second thought…I probably need to cut out the Lillet to get rid of the last 5lbs!
Gorgeous way to start off August.
If you find the credit for the bags I need one too. Also, I would love to know about the big blue beads on the necklace – they are amazing.
Thanks for the early morning eye candy!
Oh, drat! Now I want to try Lillet! It’s too pretty to pass up. All your Mister Orange arrangements are luscious! Mmm……..
drooping but still appealing.
brilliant.
xo
so chic slim!
After 300+ postings, I find myself being drawn to everything turquoise and orange lately. Must be blog brainwashing.
Loquats! Yum! I haven’t had one of those since I was a little girl. I tried to find a couple of trees to plant in my yard but had to settle for kumquats. That bowl on your table makes me wish I’d waited… (wistful sigh)…
Can’t believe my youngest son just started school again today on Aug 1! We had a wonderful July. Spent two weeks of it on St. Barts. Orange and blue combo is so beautiful and you captured it well!! Lisa from A Bloomsbury Life said she was reading “A Moveable Feast”. Must put it on my list! Feeling so in this moment after seeing “Midnight in Paris”. Hope you have seen it. Old school Woody at his best!
Loved it!
How do you get your roses SO amazing! I think you should be a set decorator.
YES the summer is indeed flying by……
OH and I would like to know where to get the bags too. LOVE THEM………have you ever thought about starting your own magazine……
Thanks so much Stephanie!
Yes, I would LOVE to be a set decorator, and maybe not a magazine but I dream about doing a coffee table book too!!
So….
How do I start?!!
Love the orange and turquoise combo. Oh…Lillet was also a favorite of Hannibal Lector…
“Stretch each day as long as you can…” My grandmother, who lived to the great age of 98, used to lay in bed in the morning and do leg lifts, arm stretches, etc. When asked to what she attributed my father’s failing health in only his sixtys, she said, “I think he sat down too soon.” Excellent metaphor and excellent advice from you SP.
Dear Slim…as usual…you didn’t disappoint me;) I too love that color scheme. Happy 300th+ and wishing you delightful August adventures!
Truly amazing roses!
As I read your post I was lazing by the blue pool with a tangerine by my side. I thought, “Dang, when did Slim Paley become a prophet?”
Beautiful post for the first stunning day of August
Delightful way to start our week xo
Gorgeous summer colour scheme Slim. And thank god you added some alcohol to this post…………..I was worried you were losing your touch. Your roses are magnificent, next year when I plant them for the 1st time, will you be cyber-there to guide me along? Divine table settings as well, so special. Much love XO
Hi Slim
I love orange – it is my favourite colour. I also love louquats- I last ate them from the tree, as a teenager. In South Africa we have “naartjie” which is a very sweet intense tangerine, the skin is sometimes dried and crushed then used to flavour syrup for donuts!! also giggled to myself at the name of the tipple Lillet (in SA it is the brand name for sanitary ware!) Thank you for your stunning pictures – you have the most amazing home and garden – and I love seeing your homegrown blooms dotted around – to me that is just the bomb!
Your posts pick me up and make me happy! Thanks for that. I was thinking you should do a book on fashion, bar tending, and living life to the fullest California style…your photography would be stunning and all of us chicks and probably a few guys would consider it our new manual on how to live a happy, beautiful and classy life..Go for it!
Second that absolutely…………..from one who reads/collectsA LOT of books on the whole life-style theme yours would be at the top of the list………….all of your blog followers could spead the word; I can see you on Martha, Nate, The View, Your Own Show, especialy now that Oprah’s gone………….how many years til last son leaves home? You’re ready to launch. Definitely go for it!
ya come on, you have lots of free time, write that book!
Ok, I know it’s sort of off the color theme, but since we’re talking about smart and color-coordinated cocktails, my new summer fav is… Vodka, Limoncello and Pellegrino – equal parts depending on your constitution. It’s not orange, but yellow’s sort of close, no???
I, too, would love to have a book of your gorgeous photos and witty wisdom. A coffee table book full of Slim style eye candy would be sure to amuse and lift the spirits. It would be fun to see you on the talk show circuit too.
You have the most spectacular roses I have ever seen. The way you photograph them is very unique and really captures their beauty. If you decide to do a book you must incorporate your photos and roses into it somehow. Have you seen the Chihuly rose? I bought a bush and it is not producing now but when it was it was a gorgeous orangey pinky thing!! Your blog is eagerly anticipated and I think any venture you put your mind to will be successful You are one of a kind and make me happy!!
Slim, gorgeous images adore the roses, the bags…let me know if you find out where they are from! I love Hemingway’s a Moveable Feast! That rug, oh my!
xoxo

I would die for that LV bag!
I loved your home when I first saw it in house beautiful last year.
I think that the color combo of torquoise and orange is gorgeous, too. your roses are beautiful!
I am going to scout out lillet for a try while we
are on vacation in the Maritimes. It is so cold here that boisson might make us feel like it’s summer!
If it’s Summer, Lillet is in the fridge! Over ice with a slice – of orange! Really jealous of the roses, you’ve got the best climate for them I think!
Hi Slim,
Honestly, I don’t even like summer that much, but somehow you always make it so appealing…I must slow down long enough to sit, read, sip a vodka tonic and appreciate the warmth of the sun!
Karen
I really like your bohemian inspirations!!
Your blog I found…HOW? I don’t know! BUT..IT is a treat to read all the wonderful things you write…And the photo’s I ADORE…..I love seeing things and reading things that make me HAPPY, JOY, and a reason to give THANKS for ALL things! Thank you for your talent and thank you for sharing. YOU make my day start off great!!! :O)
