The White Post

Did you ever go to a dance when you were young and have so many offers to Trip the Light Fantastic that you just didn’t dance at all??  NO? Me neither, but I imagine this is sort of what it’d feel like.  My post on “WHITE” has been sitting, collecting images on it’s dance card for so long that I actually lost sight of the fact that it’s August 1st already! Of course the weather here didn’t help but I’ve decided I’m not going to talk about that anymore (cold) Not even once (grey) No way (going on 9 weeks) Not going there.

So, back to WHITE. Who doesn’t love it? Have you ever heard anyone say they don’t look good in white? I’m guessing that’s said as often as “Black makes me look fat“.  It’s timeless, easy, elegant, and dare I say chic all year round if done correctly, although for this post I’m going to stay away from winter whites. Even though the temperature today was…White is wonderful be it vintage linen and lace, or fresh, crisp and modern.  An all white room is almost always fabulous.  It’s glorious in the garden, at the table… quite honestly, I’m hard pressed to think of anything that doesn’t work in white- can you?!  There must be something!  It’s even great in literature- Have you read Wilkie Collin’s “The Woman in White” ?  Oh …I should be saving that for Friday Favourites…I mean, Saturday Stuff :)

Well, I really could go on and on, so without any further delay;

Think we’ve lost the art of letter writing just a tad??

Wilkie Collins’ Victorian mystery is an absolute masterpiece of intrigue. One of the very first novels to be serialized, it was a true sensation that had throngs of fans (many dressed in white) lined up for blocks, awaiting each installment. It has one of the best villains ever!  I realize I haven’t recommended an ‘easy read’ yet, and this is certainly no exception- the writing is dense, but if you like mysteries/thrillers (I don’t usually) you must add this classic to your list. If you don’t believe me, just read the comments on Amazon.

PS. Funny story, sort of; I was such a fan of the book that when I read there was a West End production being staged in London I could scarcely contain myself. I bought tickets and took one of my dearest friends, rabidly talking it up for weeks before.  WORST play EVER.  Did I mention it was a musical? OMG, the theme song still haunts me.

  1. WOW!!! I thought I was up early!!! LOve white sista! I had a totally white bedroom once and no money for art…..so, Gregory (my son) had just given me a vase of roses. I dried them out, glued them to a large canvas and spray painted the whole thing white. Then penciled in “Gregory’s Roses” oh, it was so beautiful!

  2. white wall tyres. white snowflakes. a white bunch – gardenia’s, freesia’s, hyacinth. white Damask, white pebbles, white feathers.

  3. I heart this post. About the letter writing, I actually write like that sometimes, but I go back to boringness because it’s “reader friendly”. My high school teacher told me that and now I agree.

  4. I love your post! I really like your writing style. I love white too – my house is white – in and out, I eat on white china everyday, I have white shoes, white duvet cover, white kitchen cupboards, lots of white blouses and even a white car…
Recently however a photographer who is taking photos of my 16 year old daughter and her friends for her birthday party said for the girls should not to wear white tops for the photo shoot!!! Who would have figured… I always thought that jeans and a white tee looked great in portraits?
I enjoy reading your blog – thanks.

    • Hi Jess
I’ve never heard of not wearing a white shirt or top for photos and I must say I disagree with him/her (wow- I’m taking on professional photographers and high school teachers today- I must be feeling feisty) I know white is a no no on TV, but it’s one of my favourites for photos- it’s like holding a reflecting board up to your face- a good thing :)

  5. !!!!!!!!!!!!! AND the muscial accompaniment (sp!?)………while sitting on the deck watching the white mist rise from the early morning lake (Pea Porridge Pond, NH). Can life get any better than this?…WELL, maybe with the “casual Friday”!!!???? shoes
    Thank you!

  6. white teeth for starters…I seem to gravitate towards white on cars, love all white flowers, white dishes, white towels. Not a big fan of white shoes though, unless they are for the gym. I”ll never buy white ski boots again…

  7. A winter “white out” in the midwest means you are in for the day with a good book, fire and
a pot of soup. I know it is summer, but I have lovely memories.

  8. All white victorian dinner.
    White french tulips.
    Doves
    Snow
The white penthouse at the Huntley Hotel,SM.
Tons of white clothes for summer.

A all white house on the beach with a little turquoise!!!!
    have a great day!

  9. The Delano Hotel, South Beach, Miami
white lobby and all bedrooms white marble and white leather. Stunning with the views of the blue Atlantic and beach from the windows.

    • That’s the hotel with the big HUGE white curtains billowing on the terrace, right? I love that! We stayed there once, many years ago, and I felt oh so very South Beach!!

  10. No one mentioned snow! Nothing brings more peace and excitement at the same time than fresh fallen snow. Cant wait for ski season

  11. I have never sen a gardenia like that. Do you know the cultivar name? Fabulous white post, I would have added the bouquet of lilies I posted on my bog today. Should have gathered them in those McQueen shoes!

  12. Ahhhh….another gorgeous post!
    Let’s see…I would add:

    White peonies
White wine (La Crema Chard and Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio)
    White jeans
    White picket fences
White lies (just to protect hurt feelings?)
    White coral
    White freshwater pearls
    xoxo

  13. Tuberoses, white birch trees even if it is just the firewood–fabulous and last, a Chanel White Ceramic timepiece

  14. Beautiful, beautiful post. Every shot a dream . I love white also and always .
Happy start to our week. Would love to find that Michael Kors ensemble in my closet tomorrow.
    Thanks again for sharing
Have a happy week . ox

  15. White terry cloth robe — I mourn when I need a replacement until the new one is broken in.
Pearl stud earrings that I received on my 16th birthday.

  16. Lovely to look at as always. Only thing I can think to add other than white stephanotis is the white smoking jacket and full length skirt Bianca Jagger wore when she married Mick that they are still publishing pictures of — frequently referred to as white trousers, but Bianca has assured me it was a full length skirt.

  17. YOU HAVE TRULY CROSSED OVER TO ANOTHER LEVEL WITH THIS ONE. THE ONLY THING YOU LEFT OUT IS A PIC OF MY GHOSTLY MIDDLE AGED BODY AS I PACK FOR HAWAII. NOT COMPLAINING, MIND YOU.

  18. Okay, my list of books to read based on your rec’s is getting really long. I am not even kidding, I created an excel spreadsheet to keep track of them. “The Woman in White” sounds really good! I am keeping track of the movies you have recommended too. Can you believe I still have not seen “Out of Africa”?!?!

LOVE white jeans on everyone else but me. I try them on every year and then put them back. One of these years I will be brave enough to sport them.

    • I love that!! A “Slim Excel Spreadsheet” (Don’t know what that is exactly, but I’m proud you have one just for me! :)

And, seriously, YOU MUST watch Out Of Africa this weekend and then check in again.

PS. Just don’t tell me you haven’t watched “To Kill a Mockingbird” !

  19. Darling!!! your images are awesome, fell in love inmediately with your entire blog!!!! Love specially your own photos of flowers and details of your home, so, sooooo lovely!!!
Thank you so much for your visit and I´m so happy you found me through Janet´s blog, she is a so cute girl!!!!
Be sure I`ll come again and again, just can´t miss your style, much to learn from you. I do love so much white but eventhough I´ve tried it at home it is alwars pushed away by colors and more colors….
    Greetings from Chile,

  20. Wow, Slim! There are at least three great posts here! You are a most generous muse! I can’t stop using exclamation points! Help!

  21. I’m not a white chocolate fan, but trust me, the white chocolate bread pudding is divine at The White Chocolate Grill in Colorado. And, must have white sheets on my bed, always……

  22. my personal favorite… sea foam… that lovely white stuff that billows up from
the deep blue sea on a hot summery day… a wave crashes onto a white sandy beach,
a tall tan young man wearing a white apron (no shirt, of course) comes sauntering
up with a perfectly chilled white russian on the rocks… there I am, sitting under my
white umbrella in my white bikini… oh, oops, got a little carried away, so sorry!!

    • Wow JP- I was there with you all the way…until you mentioned white bikini, then I got depressed :(
Thanks for the gorgeous imagery though !

  23. I gotta say, not only are your, Slim’s, postings , thoughts, asides, photos, recommendations, musings, images (actual and mental) to die for; BUT followup comments of your readers are the same! I feel like I belong to a private, very chic, club/group. Thanks to all.

  24. Another great post – makes me want to live in an all-white house.

    White things I love include
    my white moonstone ring
    bathroom, towels, bedlinen, china
    cherry orchards in bloom
white linen on a nice tan (almost unheard of in the UK), ideally with a white J12 watch
Batida de Coco, a delicious white coconut-based liquor from Germany
white chocolate with matcha or saffron from Artisan du Chocolat
    white peaches
    white clouds
    white clapboard houses
most things in your readers’ comments

Strangely, I find white truffle salt is nowhere near as nice as the black stuff – which one do you use on your popcorn Slim? Even my postman smelled of truffles when at long last he
delivered my parcel from NY via London.
    whilte lilac

  25. Devil in the white city, isn’t that the name of that great book set in Chicago during the worlds fair???
The only thing I would add is Vemeers pearls. In girl with pearl earring and anything else he painted with pearls in it. One of the most beautiful whites in the world. And that was the 1600 hundreds or something. I’m experiencing gardenia envy.
Fabulous post. Isn’t there an old movie called The woman in white????

    • OMG- I can’t believe I missed that one- Devil In The White City- what a great, scary book! And definitely a much easier read than The Woman in White, although I would still love everyone to read both.
I love your well-rounded choices; from the true story of a Victorian serial killer to Vermeer’s Pearls…

PS. Not sure about The Woman in White movie, or if it’s based on the book, but I did hear at one point they were going to make a movie of Devil in The White City, starring Leonardo Di Caprio.

PPS. Wilkie Collins was the one of the few openly hedonistic members of Victorian society- living with two women at the same time and leading, shall we say, a life that would give certain current day ‘celebrities’ a run for their money. He was also best friends with Charles Dickens. Mrs. Dickens wasn’t a fan :)

  26. It’s probably the age of my kids, but when I saw the post I thought of Tilda Swinton as the White Witch from Narnia

Also – it’s really too bad Miss Wiedemann didn’t get her mother’s looks. Good Grief.

  27. Beautiful ~

    Love every white thing listed.

Did we mention crisply ironed white shirts?

I love new babies in hand-knitted white sweaters.

  28. Talcum powder! ( baby powder)
    White Christmas
White elbow length kid gloves with white pearl buttons
    White tie
    Creme fraiche or clotted cream
    White vintage XKE
    Puffy clouds
    Surf
    White Russians (the drink)
    I could go on………………………
    Great post Slim.

  29. White hydrangea’s…

The white beach house from Something’s Gotta Give…

    Love your white post Slim!

  30. Slim! I have to add a couple more……….(I knew this would happen…..)
    White tigers
    White Arches paper from France
    Goat cheese
    Feta
    Vanilla milk shakes
    White Macs (laptops)
    The Taj Mahal
    White Diamonds (the stones)
    I promise I am finished!

  31. I love this post because I love white!
    White Linen Sheets from Italy
White Diamonds ( the real ones, not the perfume, although I love La Liz)
    Vanilla Milkshakes
    Meringue
    Big fluffy white towels
    White yachts

I may be back with more…like Gaj

  32. hi slim,

i wanted to pop over and thank you for your great comment you left me. i really did not expect the response i have gotten. who knew people liked me? but truly thanks again, i hold you in pretty high esteem. that being said i’d like to add one more thing to the white list that i don’t think has been added…

    white trash.

where would tv be without it?

    ~janet

  33. Janet, your white offering made me laugh out loud, thanks so much!!!! Irreverence is sublime sometimes! (especially the off color remarks……..)
And let me add one more………TIDE! (the detergent, not that I have actually seen it since college, I assume its still white!!!!)

  34. For 200 years The White House has remained intact. It represents all the grandeur and greatness of my country. For me this is the most beautiful use of white and all that the color represents: clean, pure, unadorned–devoid of color. May she stand another 200 years.

  35. Dabbsie, the White House in Washington? Well, I think it has only been white since perhaps the days of Abe Lincoln but dont quote me. I have never found this edifice to be inspiring or lovely in any way and metaphorically speaking, hardly WHITE, if that conjures purity of spirit and the white light of the higher realms of consciousness. Perhaps a dark grey would be more appropriate on this structure.

  36. Great site, keep up the good work, my colleagues would love this. I read plenty of blogs on a daily basis, and for the most part people lack substance, but not in this case. I just wanted to make a short comment to say I’m glad I found your blog, I’m gonna bookmark the slimpaley.com web site. Thanks
