Postcard From NY
.
Having lots of fun in New York but such terrible weather today; windy wet snow… Goodness, I didn’t even make it in to my office (Bergdorf’s
) We are staying at the Carlyle and I finally ventured out after lunch but the sidewalks were so slippery and slushy and my boots so wildly inappropriate that I bailed. I know- lame, right? I couldn’t make it as far as Barney’s, I had to turn back- that’s HOW BAD IT WAS PEOPLE. So far all I’ve bought is eye-make up remover and a lint brush. I do love The Carlyle though. I love the elevator attendants, they’re so sweet (despite the fact the elevators take about 1/2 hour to arrive to your floor, not their fault), the flowers, the ambience downstairs in the restaurant and bar, and you’ve gotta love a hotel room that has big huge candles to light everywhere. Feels a little naughty somehow (I told you my danger meter is set pretty low now)

We enjoyed an absurdly decadent dinner at Thomas Keller’s “Per Se” on Valentine’s evening. Only just recovering, although I believe I paced myself better than my husband and my son (yes, there were 3 of us at Valentine’s dinner- Hellooo-married 23 years!) Thomas Keller is a true culinary GENIUS. Total Kitchen Crush. I’m including the menu below- everything was perfection, as always, but I’d have to say The Oysters and Pearls and the Maine Sea Urchin were my favourites.
Which one was I drinking from again??

We walked along Madison yesterday but I had the husband with me, which is never really conducive to getting a lot of “work” done (if you catch my drift) but I snapped a few photos of some of the many reasons why I love this city:

Stumble It!
Sorry about the weather!! Winter in New York can be a bummer.. Hope that it cooperates tomorrow.
Slim Slim Slim!
More New York, please!
As a New Yorker, may I attest to the fact that you GOT IT spot on.
Per Se, ooh, sinful.
Keep them coming, I am presently in Mexico and desperately need this rush!
And I dont miss your roses at all, the pastries make up for that quite splendidly.
(Thats a lie but they both satisfy different senses)
You are a treasure!
(Not so sure about the jade colored urn in the niche at the Carlyle but the Cafe downstairs still has I believe Elaine Stritch, not to be missed)
Oh my……the view, the menu, the cakes….I need to sleep on it and have another look in the morning. It is all soooooo good! Go Slim, go!!
Please oh please! Don’t leave without seeing (in the daytime….they will let you) the Cafe Carlyle (murals done during the war by Marcel Vertes..recently cleaned after 50+ years of tobacco smoke)! (I collect this artist….and my mother….since 1960)
Gorgeous…..also Elaine Stritch does the best cabaret you will ever hear…
I am laughing at your romantic Valentines dinner with your husband and son because it reminds me of my 20th Anniversary getaway with my husband that we spent in Paris. The trip coincided with my son’s semester in Dijon and after we spent a few days visiting with him we were planning on a night in Paris to celebrate but…he ended up coming to Paris with us and spending the night. It was just the three of us out for dinner and in the hotel room! Not what we planned but a lot of fun and really you have to enjoy your time with your kids because they won’t be doing that forever. Will they? Enjoy New York!
sp ~ I am THRILLED to receive my postcard from NY this a.m.
Never in a million years would I be able to experience it as you do…thank you for the opportunity.
Can you pick up that VW dress for me while you are there
Courtney
Looks like a fabulous trip! I’m so envious! Thanks for sharing.
Slim I feel like we are on a parallel universe,,,You are where I am in NYC and I am in Santa Babe. Its like i never left. The Carlyle is my fav hotel in the world…
Isn’t it the best city? (Among others, of course, but we New Yorkers get some major bragging rights!) I hope the weather holds today – it is icy but sunny and bright. Get out there today if you can – more snow is on the way!
Enjoy the trip!
Best,
Stephanie
Slim! You need the right boots for walking in the slush/snow/mud puddles of the world, and still be able to look chic. My faves are Pajar. Check them out at http://www.pajar.com. I have two goat hair pairs that shed the snow and slush, and
even the dirty mud puddles…they stay clean through the roughest weather! These would look very Vail or Aspen (I live in CO.)apres ski, and for every day. I’d buy the “Toledo” pair for walking in NYC. Very cute, warm and non-slip.
Loving all your pics of NYC….the Carlysle is spectacular! Enjoy every second and safe travel!
Thanks for the tip Kelly- I’m going to check them out.
I LOVE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS!!!!
Absolutley stunning!
Slim,
So glad to have you here on the East Coast, sorry about the lousy weather. Now you understand why we clamor for your vibrant photos. It is eye therapy in the midst of our dismal winter. Bop into the new Frederic Malle boutique for a whiff in the ‘scent tube’ if you miss those flowers too much. Carnal Flower-wow !
How fun that you are staying in the always wonderful Carlyle with your hubbie and son. The serenity and international vibe of Cafe Boulud is just a hop, skip and a jump across the street. Go forth and conquer and enjoy every luscious moment.
Thanks Pat-
Carnal Flower- I’m there with you! Check out my post ; http://slimpaley.com/2009/11/18/violet-frame-of-mind/ from November.
And guess what? YOU are my 1,000th comment on Slim Paley! Thanks for your encouragement and support!
Late comment after a hectic 4 days of work–Love the Bemelman’s Bar at the Carlyle. After a tiring afternoon of shopping I love sitting at the bar with a French 75 in hand and checking out all the amazing Madeline murals. So sweet. The have a Madeline’s Tea that I’ve heard is great for little darlins. I have 5 granddaughters, 5 and under and someday I hope to bring them to this tea.
Be still my sweet everlovin southern heart.
