During The Rains

Slim Paley Photo ……….

Upstairs, where I was happily, obliviously enjoying a moment of sunshine during the rain…

Meanwhile,

Who the *&#%$*  knew that the porch gutters over my kitchen were so overflowing with leaves that it could’ve been an Al Qaeda hideout and I wouldn’t have known? (It does face East)  OMG. I walked into the kitchen and my first thought was; How charming! that splashing of the rain… so dramatic and unusual for us!  Second thought-hmmm…sounds so close-almost as if it’s raining inside.  Third thought as I round the corner-could there be ANY more water coming through the windows if they were actually open?!  I seriously contemplated pushing them open to deflect the river of water absolutely pouring in and onto my desk (and computer)  Even “Rachel U.” the spider didn’t survive the onslaught-or at least her web didn’t.

So, that was my upper body exercise for the week, thank you very much.  My husband and I were working in shifts with mops and brooms and umbrellas like two lunatics until help came.  We haven’t had a single leak in this house (built in 1895) for the sixteen years we’ve lived here so I guess I got just a liihhtle too complacent about the whole “WINTERIZE” your house drill.

Oh well.  At least I didn’t have that grown up nails/manicure resolution thing pulled together cause that would have been a waste.  :)

The photo above is from a sumptuous book my parents bought me for Christmas called The Life and Love of TREES by Lewis Blackwell. (Chronicle Books 2009)  It’s a MUST for all lovers of trees- a real beauty.

Now the sun is out and it looks like we might even get a rainbow.

Oh, now it’s gone again and it looks like more rain, they say we  might even get thunder and lightening storms.

Lastly,

I leave you with an example of when water rushing onto a table is a beautiful thing

  1. I am, I have to admit, still chuckling having read your blog, and enjoyed once again REMARKABLE pages from Lewis Blackwell’s book- must have The Life and love of Trees. I loved the song also.
Back to your rain and drain pipe fiasco , it was I hope totally attended to and you shared your Joie de vivre with us again. Thanks.

  2. Brace yourself and your gutters Slim because in the next few days Mother Nature’s rain & wind will hit our sweet little town stronger than ever (or so “they” say ) and keep holding off on that resolution….a manicured garden is so much more enjoyable than a manicured hand :-)
Am I the only one worried about Rachel U?…the spider that is.

  3. No, M.L.—you aren’t the only one who is concerned about Rachel Spider. I was just waiting for someone else to mention it. I didn’t want to be the only one. I’m a coward like that.

  4. I really hope Rachel returns and builds a glorious new web. The photos of the trees are beautiful, I could get lost in them.

  5. Ah the rain .. as much as I love it, yesterday it knocked out the power at our house from 1pm one day to 8am the next .. did I mention I have an electric gate on my driveway. No car leaving my house when the power is out – apparently. Everyone keeps asking me about some secret manual release .. does electric gate not mean “electic”. I am completely unaware of a kill switch. I came back into the house resolved to the fact that I would have a lovely cup of tea and stoke the fire and not worry about work today when the cries of my housekeeper jolted me into reality. It would appear water was not dripping out of a pot light upstair but pouring. Long story short my gutters too were completely clogged and on a large flat roof .. I think you get the picture. swimming pool. swimming pool pouring out of my pocket light. By the time I was done fixing that issue work seemed like a vacation on the beach !! Ah, the rain …

  6. Thank you for your comment on your gutters during the rains we have been having here the last several weeks. We too had that problem and I didn’t believe my husband when he said that was our problem as well because after all our gardener cleans them out when rain is in our forecast. Obviously not this time! The lovely picture of your front porch would be unbelievable if I didn’t live here and see the same scenario when I look out my windows….so beautiful you don’t believe it yourself.

  7. Why am I not surprised you also like Crowded House? My all time favorite group. Neil is quite the writer and this is a great song that I never tire of hearing. Not surprised you know them. Thanks for the listen. I’ve just spent the evening in the basement due to tornadoes and we are still without power. Really reminds of you what hours in the dark must have felt like so many years ago. Not at all fun and REALLY appreciating the remaining battery life on my tablet right about now. Enjoyed these beautiful photos. We are experiencing the same beauty outdoors right now. Unfortunately, where I live, Spring’s beauty also brings these type of storms. The good with the bad. We are safe.

    • Well, I meant flowers from the previous post😊but I also loved these amazing trees. I must check this book out, it looks fantastic.
