Splendid friends, family, food and drink…

It’s true what they say about Grecian Formula- it really DOES take the years off!

P.S.  Couldn’t we all just agree to let summer go on one more month?? :)

The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit

L1050028

I just finished reading The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit by Lucette Lagnado.      Lagnado writes poignantly but is never overly sentimental- a difficult feat given her family’s heart-breaking decent from a once grand and privileged life in Cairo to near destitution, first in France, then America.  After enjoying a carefree and indulgent lifestyle in the glamorous Cairo that existed just after World War II, the family suddenly faces both personal tragedy and severe political unrest.  Forced to flee Egypt with thousands of other Jews following the fall from power of King Farouk, Leon Lagnado, now in his sixties, with wife Edith and their four children find themselves on a ship destined for NY.   Without money or any notion of what awaits them, they know it is not their already settled relatives, who have steadfastly turned down the Jewish Relief Agency’s requests to aid the family of six upon their arrival.  Disembarking, they are greeted solely by the bitter bite of their first real winter and a Manhattan that shows them little mercy.  Be forewarned; there is no happy ending in this memoir however there is beauty to be found in the intensely complex but deeply loving relationship between father and daughter.

Caveats:  Where oh where were her editors the umpteenth time the author mentions the 26 bags of luggage they carried?!   2) Search as I might, I could not find any resemblance to Cary Grant in the author’s photos of her father.  I dare say this is the only instance in which she viewed the past through rose coloured glasses, but it’s kind of sweet.

Treat Yourself

jm_L11W01_lrgI am totally addicted to this divine body treatment scrub by Jo Malone .  It is $75 but comes in quite a large jar and lasts longer than you’d think.  Plus, with free shipping on the Jo Malone website its practically like getting a discount. The big decision is whether to hoard it or share it with your significant other and have them feel and smell as good as you do.  Let your conscience be your guide.

Damn, Sun Valley is a seriously gorgeous place!  The quality of light, the way it plays upon the mountains from early morning until almost 10 pm in the summertime – Mother Nature’s sense of chiaroscuro is a wondrous thing.  Just park me by the river with a good book, a large bag of Kettle chips (Spicy Thai) and a Cadenhead’s “Old Raj” gin and tonic and I’m a happy camper.  Although, come to think of it, that combo works for me in many scenarios. While contemplating the mighty beauty of the mountains I was reminded of the song “Blue Ridge Mountains” (link below) by Fleet Foxes.  I can’t stop listening to their CD! Especially “Blue Ridge”, “Oliver James” and “White Winter Hymnal”.  Fleet Foxes and a few other bands are restoring my faith lately in new music.  OK- is that an old person thing to say? Because I think I just sounded like my father right there.  You kids these days…
